How Long Can a Pakistani Student Stay on a UK Student Visa? Course Dates, Wrap-Up Periods and the Graduate Visa Deadline

A UK Student visa usually lasts for your course plus a short wrap-up period: up to 4 months after a course of 12 months or longer, 2 months after a course of 6 to under 12 months, and 7 days after a very short one. Overall you can usually stay up to 5 years at degree level or 2 years below it. If you plan to switch to the Graduate visa, a deadline on 31 December 2026 decides whether you get 2 years or 18 months.

UK Student visa length and wrap-up period for Pakistani students in 2026

How long can a Pakistani student stay on a UK Student visa?

As of 15 October 2026, GOV.UK says a student aged 18 or over on a degree-level course can usually stay in the UK for up to 5 years, and a student on a course below degree level can usually stay for up to 2 years. Those are ceilings for study in total, not the length of any single visa. A one-year master's does not give you five years, and the limit counts study you have already completed in the UK.

GOV.UK states that the length depends on your course and on any study you have already done in the UK, and it sends you to the Home Office rules for the exact calculation. In practice that means two things. Your visa is cut to fit your course dates, and it is cut again if you have already used up part of your five or two years.

For most Pakistani applicants this question matters in three moments. When you decide whether a course fits inside your time limit. When you plan your arrival and your first lease. And when you decide how to use the weeks after your final exam, which is where the wrap-up period comes in. This guide covers all three, with the figures taken from GOV.UK and the Immigration Rules.

If you are still working out whether the UK is right for you, our overview of the full cost of a UK Student visa from Pakistan and our guide to processing times from Pakistan are good companions to this one.

Tip. Write down your course start date, end date and visa expiry in one place, and check them against the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Most date mistakes start with a CAS that was never read carefully.

How is the length of my permission worked out?

The Immigration Rules build your permission from three blocks. The first is a short period before the course starts. The second is the course itself, as shown on your CAS. The third is the period after the course ends.

Think of the CAS as the anchor. Your university enters the course start and end dates, and the Home Office grants permission around them. If the CAS dates are wrong, your permission is wrong, and fixing a visa is slower than fixing a typo before you apply. Our guide to the CAS letter explains how to check it.

The blocks differ depending on the type of course. A degree course gets a longer tail than a short English language course. A pre-sessional course is treated differently from other short courses. A student who changes course midway has a new CAS, a new period, and sometimes a new application. We cover the extension case later.

One more concept helps. Your permission is not the same as your right to work. Your work conditions depend on your course and your visa, and they stop at the end of your permission, not at the end of the semester.

What is the wrap-up period after my course ends?

The wrap-up period is the extra time the Home Office adds after your course end date. It is meant for the practical business of finishing: results, graduation, packing, travel, and for some students, applying for another visa.

As of 15 October 2026, rule ST 25 of Appendix Student adds 4 months after the course end date for courses of 12 months or longer, 2 months after courses of 6 months or longer but under 12 months, and 7 days after courses under 6 months that are not pre-sessional.

UKCISA, the UK's advice service for international students, publishes the same table on its own page for applying from outside the UK. It also lists a one-month period after a pre-sessional course under six months, and a one-month period for postgraduate doctors and dentists. For most Pakistani students on a master's or bachelor's degree, the first row is the one that applies.

Course typeBefore course startAfter course end
12 months or longerUp to 1 month4 months
6 months or longer, under 12 monthsUp to 1 month2 months
Pre-sessional course under 6 monthsUp to 1 month1 month
Under 6 months, not pre-sessional7 days7 days

As of 15 October 2026, the same rule allows your permission to begin up to 1 month before a course of 6 months or longer starts, and 7 days before a short course that is not pre-sessional.

What the wrap-up period is not

It is not extra study time. It is not an automatic extension of your work rights beyond what the rules say. And it is not a chance to stay on after your course for tourism without thinking about your next status. If you plan to stay in the UK beyond it, you need another visa, and the right one depends on your plans. The next two sections cover the two most common cases.

When can I travel to the UK before my course starts?

As of 15 October 2026, GOV.UK lets you arrive up to 1 week before the start of a course lasting 6 months or less, and up to 1 month before a course lasting longer than 6 months. You should not travel before the start date on your visa, whatever your course start date is.

UKCISA explains how the start of your permission is decided. It begins on the later of one month before the course starts, or seven days before the intended date of travel that you gave in your application. If your travel date was less than a month before the course start, your permission starts seven days before that travel date. You cannot go earlier than the date you gave.

The practical lesson for Pakistani students is to state a realistic travel date in the application. A student who gives a date in early September, then wants to fly in mid-August to settle into a flat, may find the permission does not start early enough. Make your travel plan first, then apply, and keep a margin for flight changes.

Digital status and your eVisa

Physical permits have been replaced for most people by digital status. Wait until your eVisa is issued before you plan arrival, and read our guide on the UK eVisa for Pakistani students to see how to access and share it.

How early can I apply, and what does it cost?

As of 15 October 2026, you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts when you apply from outside the UK, and a decision usually takes 3 weeks.

As of 15 October 2026, the Student visa application fee is £558 when you apply from outside the UK, plus the healthcare surcharge. The healthcare surcharge depends on how long your visa lasts, which links back to the dates above. A longer permission means a bigger surcharge, so the wrap-up period does affect your total, though modestly.

Three weeks is a guide, not a promise. Peaks in summer and early autumn can slow things down, and a request for more documents pauses the clock. Aim to apply well before your enrolment deadline and not in the final days before your travel plan. GOV.UK says a faster decision may be available for a fee, and you are told if you are eligible when you apply. For a longer discussion of timing, see our article on the UK visa timeline.

  • Apply no earlier than 6 months before the course starts.
  • Do not book non-refundable flights until the decision arrives.
  • Check the course dates on the CAS against your university offer.
  • Keep your passport valid for the full period you are asking for.

What if I need to extend or change course inside the UK?

If your course is longer than your visa, or you move to a new course, you apply to extend or switch from inside the UK. As of 15 October 2026, GOV.UK requires you to apply before your current visa expires, no earlier than 3 months before your new course starts, and your new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring.

The 28-day rule is where students slip. If your visa expires on 1 December, the new course must start by 29 December. A gap longer than that makes a switch difficult. Check that your new course start date and your current expiry fit before you pay a deposit.

As of 15 October 2026, an application to extend or switch from inside the UK costs £558 and usually gets a decision within 8 weeks. You can stay in the UK until you get a decision, but you should not leave the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before the decision, or the application will be withdrawn. If you need to travel for a family emergency, speak to a qualified adviser first.

The new course usually has to be at a higher academic level than your current course, with listed exceptions such as resits or finishing a PhD started on the previous Student visa. For the whole process in more detail, see our guide to a UK Student visa extension from inside the UK.

How does the wrap-up period connect to the Graduate visa deadline?

This is the part with a date attached to it. As of 15 October 2026, the Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, with 3 years for a PhD or other doctoral qualification.

The Graduate route lets you stay and work, or look for work, after a UK degree. To qualify, you must be in the UK, hold a Student visa, and your education provider must have told the Home Office that you successfully completed the course. It is made from inside the UK, so you cannot apply from Lahore after you have gone home.

Put those two facts together and you get a planning problem for some students. If your course ends in the autumn or winter of 2026, your wrap-up period may run into the new year. An application submitted by 31 December 2026 gets 2 years, while one submitted from 1 January 2027 gets 18 months. The wrap-up period does not change that. The date of your application does.

What this means for your plans

  • Ask your university when it will report your successful completion to the Home Office. The Graduate application cannot be completed before that.
  • If your course ends before the new year and you want the longer permit, apply before 31 December 2026 if the university has confirmed completion by then.
  • If your course ends later, plan on 18 months, and budget your job search accordingly.
  • Keep your Student permission valid until you have applied. Do not leave the UK before the decision.

We explain the route in full in our guide to the UK Graduate Route visa for Pakistani students.

Does the UK visa brake affect Pakistani students?

Not at the time of writing. The Home Office guidance for caseworkers says the visa brake applies from 26 March 2026 to nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, and Pakistan is not on that list. The brake means caseworkers must refuse out-of-country Student applications from nationals of the listed countries made on or after that date. It applies where the main applicant's passport confirms nationality of an affected country.

That said, a rule can be extended. If you read a headline about visa restrictions, check the date, check the countries, and check the GOV.UK page before you act, or ask us through our contact page. Our policy is to say what is written on the official pages, not what we fear might come next.

What date mistakes cost students the most?

Reading the visa expiry as the day you must leave

The expiry date includes the wrap-up period. Your real deadline to apply for another visa is earlier than that, because you must apply while your current permission is still valid.

Travelling too early

Your permission starts on a set date. Landing before it risks problems at the border.

A CAS with the wrong dates

A university typo ripples into your visa. Check start and end dates before you submit, not after.

Missing the 28-day switch window

If your new course starts more than 28 days after your current visa expires, the switch is likely to fail. Plan the gap before you accept an offer.

Leaving the UK while an application is pending

A pending extension or Graduate application is withdrawn if you travel outside the common travel area before a decision. That includes a weekend in Dublin.

Assuming the wrap-up period is for work

The wrap-up period is time to finish and plan, not a licence to start a new job outside your permission. Check your own conditions before you accept work.

A worked example with dates

Take Hassan, a Lahore graduate who has an offer for a 12-month master's starting 21 September 2027. This is an illustration with invented dates, not a prediction.

  • March 2027. His university issues the CAS with a course end date of 15 September 2028. Hassan checks both dates against his offer letter.
  • Spring 2027. He applies from Pakistan, no earlier than six months before the course start, and states a travel date of 15 September 2027. A decision usually takes around 3 weeks.
  • August 2027. His permission begins on the later of one month before the course starts, or seven days before his stated travel date. He flies on 15 September.
  • 15 September 2028. His course ends. A course of 12 months or longer adds 4 months, so his permission runs to about 15 January 2029.
  • Autumn 2028. His university confirms completion. Because his application falls after 1 January 2027, a Graduate visa would give 18 months. He applies from inside the UK before his Student permission expires.

Now the version that goes wrong. A classmate has a CAS that lists the course end as June instead of September. His permission is shorter than his course, and he discovers it only when he tries to extend. Same course, same university, avoidable stress.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a UK Student visa for a one-year master's?

It covers your course dates on the CAS plus the periods before and after. A course of 12 months or longer receives 4 months after the end date, and up to 1 month before the start, so the visa is usually longer than the course by about five months in total.

What is the wrap-up period on a UK Student visa?

It is the extra time added after your course end date. The Immigration Rules give 4 months after a course of 12 months or longer, 2 months after a course of 6 months or longer but under 12 months, and 7 days after a short course that is not pre-sessional.

Can I work during the wrap-up period?

Your work conditions follow your visa, not the semester. Check the conditions on your own permission before you accept any work, and do not assume the wrap-up period changes them.

What is the maximum time I can spend on a Student visa?

GOV.UK says up to 5 years at degree level for students aged 18 or over, and up to 2 years below degree level, depending on your course and your previous UK study.

How early can I travel to the UK?

Up to 1 week before the start of a course lasting 6 months or less, and up to 1 month before a longer course, according to GOV.UK. Never travel before the start date shown on your visa.

How early can I apply for the Student visa from Pakistan?

Up to 6 months before your course starts. GOV.UK says a decision usually takes 3 weeks from outside the UK, but a request for documents can add time.

How much does the UK Student visa cost?

GOV.UK lists £558 for an application from outside the UK, plus the healthcare surcharge, which depends on how long your visa lasts. The same fee applies to an extension or switch from inside the UK.

Can I extend my Student visa if my new course starts after my visa ends?

Only if the new course begins within 28 days of your current visa expiring, and you apply before the expiry. A bigger gap makes the extension difficult, so check the dates before accepting an offer.

When should I apply for the Graduate visa?

From inside the UK, while you hold a Student visa and after your university has told the Home Office you completed the course. The deadline that matters most this winter is 31 December 2026, which separates the 2-year and 18-month versions.

Does the UK visa brake apply to Pakistan?

The Home Office guidance lists Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan as the nationalities subject to the brake from 26 March 2026. Pakistan is not on that list, but always check the live GOV.UK pages.

Can I leave the UK while my extension is pending?

No. GOV.UK says that if you leave the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before a decision, your application will be withdrawn.

Can Border and Bridges check my CAS and visa dates?

Yes. We can review your CAS, your course dates, your funds and your plan for the wrap-up period, and tell you plainly where the risks are. We cannot promise a visa decision, because that rests with the Home Office.
