How Do Pakistani Students Extend a UK Student Visa From Inside the UK? (2026)

You extend a UK Student visa from inside the UK by applying online before your current visa expires, with a new CAS for a course that starts within 28 days of your old permission ending, then paying the £558 fee and the healthcare surcharge and proving your identity. You stay in the UK, you do not fly home, and you must not leave the Common Travel Area until the decision. The decision usually takes about 8 weeks. Most refusals and withdrawals trace back to three avoidable errors: a gap that runs past 28 days, a trip abroad while the application is pending, and a course that does not count as progress. This guide covers how it works for a Pakistani student already in the UK, what it costs, and the sequence that keeps your lawful stay unbroken.

How a Pakistani student extends a UK Student visa from inside the UK in 2026

Who can extend a Student visa from inside the UK?

You can extend if you are in the UK on a Student visa or on the older Tier 4 (General) student visa, and you hold an unconditional offer of a place on a course with a licensed student sponsor. That offer shows up as your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the CAS. Without a valid CAS there is nothing to extend onto, so the university comes first and the Home Office second.

Typical Pakistani cases look like this: a student finishing a foundation year or a pre-master's and moving onto the degree itself, a bachelor's graduate starting a master's at the same or another university, or a student moving from a one year diploma into a full course. Each of these is an ordinary in-country extension. It is the same application whether you stay with your current sponsor or move to a new one.

Who cannot use this route?

If you hold a Visitor visa, you cannot switch into the Student route from inside the UK at all. Our guide on switching from a Visitor visa to a Student visa explains why. Your partner and children cannot ride on your application either. As GOV.UK states, partners and children must apply separately, each with their own fee and surcharge.

What if you are on a different visa?

Someone moving from a Graduate visa or a work visa back into study is a different case with its own rules, and it is a switch rather than an extension. Treat anything outside a straight Student to Student move as something to check with the official guidance before you pay a fee. A wrong application does not always get a refund.

When can you apply, and what is the 28 day rule?

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your course starts, and the CAS must be no more than 6 months old, as the extension page and Appendix Student both explain. That window is wide enough to plan around but narrow enough that applying in August for a course starting next June will not work. The system rejects early applications, so the sensible target is a few weeks before your visa runs out, once the CAS is in your hands.

Your new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring, according to GOV.UK. This is the rule that traps people. It looks forgiving until a CAS start date lands a month and a half after your old visa ends. UKCISA describes it bluntly as an eligibility requirement with no exceptions. If the gap is longer than 28 days, the in-country application is not available and you would have to leave and apply from outside the UK.

How the two dates fit together

Think of three dates: the day your current permission ends, the day your new course starts, and the day you submit. The submission has to happen before the first of those. The new course start must fall within 28 days after it. And the submission cannot be earlier than 3 months before the course start. Put them on a calendar before you book anything else.

Tip. Ask your university to confirm the course start date on the CAS against your visa expiry before you accept the offer. A pre-sessional or induction date is not always the date the CAS uses. If the dates and the 28 days do not line up, ask for a different start date or intake in writing while there is still time.

What if you apply late?

Apply before your current visa expires. If you apply on time, you remain lawfully in the UK while the decision is pending, and UKCISA notes that this continued stay is protected by what the rules call section 3C leave. Apply even one day after expiry and that protection is gone. A late application is usually a refusal waiting to happen, with consequences for future applications.

Does your new course count as academic progress?

This is the check Pakistani students most often underestimate. The Immigration Rules ask you to have completed the course you were last given permission for, and to show academic progress from the previous course. In most cases that means your new course is at a higher academic level than your old one.

There are exceptions. Resits and repeated modules, finishing a PhD with the same sponsor, and certain study abroad or placement arrangements are treated differently. A student moving from a bachelor's degree to a master's is moving up. A student moving from a master's to a second master's at the same level generally is not, unless the sponsor can show the new course relates to the previous study or supports a defined career aspiration. Your sponsor makes that statement, so ask the international office early.

Is there a limit on how long you can study?

Appendix Student also caps how many years of Student permission you can build up, with a five year limit for degree level study and a two year limit for courses below degree level, unless an exception applies. Students who enter at foundation level, then do a bachelor's, then a master's, sometimes need to count their years carefully. Exceptions exist for certain subjects, including medicine, dentistry and some law courses, but they are narrow. Ask your sponsor to check your total, because it also counts time you spent waiting under section 3C leave.

  • Pre-master's to master's at the same university is a standard progression.
  • Bachelor's to master's is also standard progression.
  • Second master's after a first needs the sponsor's supporting statement.
  • Repeating a failed year needs the exception wording on the CAS to be correct.

How much does an extension cost?

You pay two main items to the Home Office: the application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. As of 12 October 2026, the GOV.UK page on extending a Student visa lists a fee of £558 per person, and the healthcare surcharge is paid on top. If you bring family, each person pays their own fee and surcharge. Check the current dependant rules before you plan for family to join you.

As of 12 October 2026, the Home Office healthcare surcharge page sets the student rate at £776 per year, and applying from inside the UK for six months or less costs half of that, £388. The surcharge is charged on the length of permission you are granted, not the length of the course. For a one year master's, the permission usually runs a few months beyond the course end, so the charge can stretch past a single year. Our explainer on the UK immigration health surcharge for Pakistani students shows how the maths works.

What about a faster decision?

UKCISA lists the priority route at £1,058 with a five working day decision, and super priority at £1,558 with a next working day decision, but check the Home Office fee tool before paying. You are told whether you are eligible when you apply. The choice is yours, and it makes sense mainly when a start date or a job is close. Our note on priority and super priority service explains when paying more is worth it.

Other costs to budget

Plan for passport photos if your identity check needs them, a possible biometrics appointment, translation of any documents not in English, and an ATAS certificate if your course needs one, which is free but can be slow. Add the cost of keeping your documents in the UK for weeks. Pakistani families should also budget for currency movement, since the pound figures above are paid in sterling from your UK account or card.

Do you need to show maintenance funds again?

If you have had a valid visa in the UK for at least 12 months you do not have to prove maintenance funds again, as the GOV.UK money page sets out, while the extension page asks for proof from anyone with less than 12 months. If you have been in the UK on a visa for less than a year, you need to prove you can pay for your course for one academic year, up to 9 months, and cover living costs. That is common for a student starting a one year master's after a year on a pathway programme with a short visa.

As of 12 October 2026, the GOV.UK money guidance asks for £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to 9 months. The money must be held for at least 28 days in a row, and the 28 day period must end within 31 days of your application date. For Pakistani families that usually means a clear bank statement, often from a Pakistani bank, with the balance steady across the window. Our detailed note on how much bank statement is needed for a UK Student visa covers the formats and the common bank-statement pitfalls.

The rate change coming on 30 November 2026

The living-costs figure is rising. As of 12 October 2026, Statement of Changes HC 584 raises the outside London figure from £1,171 to £1,203 a month for applications made on or after 30 November 2026. The same statement replaces the London figure of £1,529 with £1,570, though you should read the final rules text on the day you apply. The explanatory memorandum says the change is meant to match the maintenance loans available to home students, and it states that applications made before that date are decided under the rules in force on 29 November 2026.

Practically, if you plan to apply in late November, decide whether to submit before the change or to prepare the higher balance. Do not rely on a rule of thumb from a friend. Check the figure on the day you apply, and remember that you need the money in place 28 days before you submit, not on the day itself.

What are the steps, in order?

The order matters because several items have to exist before the next one can happen. Here is the sequence that works for most Pakistani students.

  1. Accept your offer and ask for the CAS, stating your current visa expiry date so the sponsor checks the 28 days.
  2. Check the CAS for course level, dates and fee. A CAS can only be used once, so errors need fixing before you apply.
  3. Check whether your course needs ATAS clearance. Our guide to ATAS clearance for Pakistani applicants explains why that can take weeks.
  4. Arrange your funds and hold them for 28 days if you need to show them.
  5. Complete the online application, which asks about your course, your history and your finances.
  6. Pay the application fee and the healthcare surcharge.
  7. Prove your identity, either with the UK Immigration: ID Check app if you are eligible or at a UKVCAS service point.
  8. Upload or bring the documents requested and submit.
  9. Wait in the UK for the decision.

Which documents does the application use?

The core items are your passport, the CAS and, where required, financial evidence and an ATAS certificate. GOV.UK also lists a TB test certificate where one applies, written consent from a financial sponsor if they paid your costs in the past 12 months, and parental consent for anyone under 18. The extension page links to a longer list, so open that list on the day you apply rather than working from an old checklist.

Because you already hold UK permission, your eVisa is your proof of status. Learn how to view and share it before you apply, because landlords and employers will ask for it.

What happens while you wait for the decision?

As of 12 October 2026, GOV.UK says a decision on an in-country extension is usually made within 8 weeks. The Home Office may contact you if it needs more evidence, if an interview is required, or if there is a concern about your case. Answer quickly and in writing, and keep copies. Silence from you can turn a routine case into a refusal.

While the application is pending, you can stay in the UK and carry on studying. Your work rights continue on the same terms as your previous permission, so check your conditions rather than assuming. If you applied in time, you are protected until the decision, and if you ask for an administrative review after a refusal, GOV.UK says you may stay until that review is decided.

Can you withdraw?

You can withdraw an application, but the fee is only refunded if UKVI has not started processing it. Treat withdrawal as a last step rather than a way to fix a mistake. If you realise your CAS is wrong, speak to the sponsor and plan the correction before submission.

Can you travel while the application is pending?

You must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision, and GOV.UK warns that your application will be withdrawn if you do. UKCISA adds that leaving the Common Travel Area on the passport used in your application is treated as withdrawing it, with the health surcharge refunded but the application fee not.

That rule shapes a whole season of decisions for Pakistani families. A Christmas trip home, a wedding in Lahore, a sick relative in Karachi: all of them can force a hard choice. If you must leave, you may need to withdraw and apply again from abroad, which means a new fee and a visa decision made from outside the UK. If you can wait for the decision, wait.

  • Travel inside the UK, and to Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, does not withdraw the application.
  • A trip to Pakistan, Dubai, Turkey or anywhere else outside that area does.
  • If a family emergency forces you, speak to your sponsor and an adviser before you book the ticket.

Extend, switch or go home: which route fits?

The table sets out the three situations Pakistani students most often find themselves in. Use it to see which one you are in before you start paying fees.

Should you think about the Graduate visa instead?

If you have finished your course and want time to work, the Graduate visa may suit you better. As of 12 October 2026, GOV.UK gives a Graduate visa of 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. The extension page also notes that PhD holders get 3 years. Our guide to the UK Graduate route visa covers it fully.

What mistakes cause refusals?

Most failures are not dramatic. They are small slips that the rules treat as fatal. Look through this list the week before you apply.

  • Applying after the visa has expired. The in-country route needs you to apply while you still hold permission.
  • A start date more than 28 days away. Check it against your expiry before you accept the offer.
  • Using an old CAS. It must be issued no more than 6 months before the application, and it can only be used once.
  • Travelling mid-application. One trip abroad withdraws the application.
  • Funds held for fewer than 28 days. The balance must stay above the required figure for the whole window.
  • Funds in an account the rules do not accept. Check the format and ownership of the statement.
  • Weak progress. A lateral course with no sponsor statement can fail the progress test.
  • Missing ATAS. A course that needs it cannot be sponsored without it.
  • Ignoring an email from UKVI. Respond within the deadline it gives.

Notice how few of these involve the Home Office doing anything unfair. They involve dates, documents and discipline, which are within your control.

A worked example with dates

Take Hamza, a Lahore student whose pathway programme visa ends on 31 August 2027. His degree starts on 20 September 2027, which is 20 days after the visa ends and inside the 28 day limit. His CAS was issued on 10 June 2027, so it is well inside the 6 month limit.

The earliest he can apply is 20 June 2027, three months before the course. He has been in the UK for just under a year, so he needs to show funds. He holds the required balance from 1 June, so by 29 June he has passed 28 days. He applies on 5 July 2027, pays the fee and surcharge, and proves his identity through the app. His decision is likely to arrive within about 8 weeks, which is around early September, comfortably before his course begins. He stays in the UK throughout and does not book a flight home until the decision arrives.

Now change one thing. If his degree started on 5 October 2027, the gap would be 35 days. The extension would not be available and he would have to leave and apply from Pakistan. The dates, not the paperwork, decide the route. Nothing in this example is a promise of outcome. It shows how the timing rules work.

What if the extension is refused?

A refusal does not always mean the end of your stay. If you applied in time, you may be able to ask for an administrative review, which has a short deadline. Read the refusal letter for the exact reasons and the deadline, because it decides your options. Our guide to administrative review after a UK visa refusal explains what the review can and cannot fix. Do not travel in a panic, and do not apply again without understanding why the first application failed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my UK Student visa without leaving the UK?

Yes, if you hold a Student or Tier 4 visa, have a valid CAS for a course with a licensed sponsor, and your new course starts within 28 days of your current permission ending. You apply online and stay in the UK while the decision is made.

How long does a Student visa extension take?

GOV.UK says a decision is usually made within 8 weeks for an in-country application. You may be able to pay for a faster decision, and you are told if you are eligible when you apply.

How much does it cost to extend a Student visa?

The Home Office fee is £558 per person as of 12 October 2026, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is charged on the length of permission granted. Dependants pay their own fees. Check the official fee tool on the day you apply.

What is the 28 day rule?

The new course must start no more than 28 days after your current permission expires. UKCISA describes it as an eligibility requirement with no exceptions. If the gap is longer, you need to leave the UK and apply from outside.

Can I travel to Pakistan while my extension is pending?

No. Leaving the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before the decision is treated as withdrawing the application. The healthcare surcharge is refunded but the application fee is not.

When is the earliest I can apply?

No more than 3 months before your course start date. You also need a CAS issued no more than 6 months before you apply. Applying too early is not accepted.

Do I need to show bank statements again?

Only if you have held a valid UK visa for less than 12 months. After 12 months you do not need to prove maintenance funds again. If you do need them, the money must be held for 28 days in a row.

Will the maintenance amount change?

Yes. A Statement of Changes (HC 584) raises the outside London figure to £1,203 a month for applications made on or after 30 November 2026, and replaces the London figure of £1,529 with £1,570. Applications made earlier are decided under the earlier rules.

Can my wife or children extend with me?

They must apply separately, each paying their own fee and surcharge. Whether a dependant can still be in the UK depends on the rules in force, so check the current dependant guidance before planning.

What if my new course is at the same level as my old one?

The rules ask for academic progress. A same level course may still qualify if an exception applies or if the sponsor confirms it relates to your previous study or your career aims. Ask the international office before you apply.

Should I use the Graduate visa instead of extending?

If you have finished your course and want to work, the Graduate visa may suit you. It is 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, with 3 years for PhD holders.

What if my extension is refused?

Read the refusal letter for the reasons and the deadline. You may be able to ask for an administrative review if you applied in time. Do not travel or reapply without understanding the reason first.
