UK and Canada Student Visa Extensions: The Deadline That Catches Students Out (2026)

Applying one day before your permission expires and one day after it put you in two different legal positions, and in Canada the difference decides whether you are allowed to keep attending classes. Apply in time and you can usually carry on while you wait. Fall out of status and you have ninety days to fix it, during which IRCC says you cannot study. That is the deadline that catches people out. Not a form, not a fee, just a date that quietly separates a routine extension from a situation that needs rescuing. Everything below is from the official pages, each linked and dated.

UK and Canada student visa extension deadlines and the restoration window compared

The two states you can be in

Strip away the paperwork and there are only two situations, separated by one date.

In time. You applied before your current permission expired. Your position while the decision is pending is protected, and in Canada that protection has a name and covers your studies.

Out of status. Your permission expired before you applied. You are now in a recovery process with its own deadline, its own fee, and its own restrictions on what you may do while it runs.

Students think of these as the same task done at different speeds. They are not. They are different legal situations and the second one is considerably worse, which is why the single most valuable thing on this page is the instruction to look at your expiry date today.

UK: before expiry, and do not travel

The UK rule is short, and the trap is not in the rule itself.

As of 4 November 2026, the GOV.UK page on extending a Student visa states that you must apply before your current visa expires, and gives its own example: if your visa expires on 1 December, you must apply for a new visa before 1 December.

As of 4 November 2026, the same GOV.UK page states that you can stay in the UK until you get your decision.

The travel rule that withdraws your application

This is the one that does real damage, because it conflicts with family life.

As of 4 November 2026, the GOV.UK page states that you must not travel outside of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision, and that your application will be withdrawn if you do.

Read that as written. Not delayed. Withdrawn.

A Pakistani student with an ill parent at home, a sibling's wedding booked, or a visa-run habit from an earlier stage of their life can lose an extension application by getting on a plane. The rule is not hidden and it is routinely discovered too late.

If you know you will need to travel, say so before you apply, not after. The decision about when to lodge is yours and it is easier to make deliberately than in an airport. Take advice if a trip is likely during the processing window, because the alternative is choosing between your family and your application with no time to think.

Two further UK deadlines

As of 4 November 2026, the GOV.UK page states that your new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring.

As of 4 November 2026, the same GOV.UK page states that you must also apply within 6 months of getting a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

The first catches students arranging a deliberate gap between courses. The second catches students who obtain a CAS early to feel organised and then take months to assemble everything else. Our guide to extending a UK Student visa from inside the UK covers the application itself in more detail.

Canada: applying in time

Canada gives the in-time applicant something explicit, and it is worth understanding precisely because the out-of-status position is so much weaker.

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC's help centre states that you are allowed to stay in Canada because you have maintained your status, and that you can keep studying until you get a decision on your application.

Two conditions sit behind that, and both matter.

  • You applied before the permit expired. That is the whole basis of the protection.
  • It applies to the permit you hold. IRCC's help page notes that a student who applied for a different permit cannot keep studying while waiting, so this is not a general licence.

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC guide 5552 states that applying early allows you to remain in Canada under the same conditions of your current study permit until you receive a decision.

That is the reward for watching a date. It costs nothing and it is entirely within your control.

Canada: the ninety-day restoration window

If the permit expired first, you are in restoration, and the rules change in a way students consistently underestimate.

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC guide 5552 states that you may be able to restore your status as a visitor, student or worker within 90 days of losing it.

Now the part that matters most on this page.

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC's help centre states that you cannot continue or restart your studies until your status has been restored and a new study permit issued.

Students read "I have ninety days" as "I have ninety days of normal life". It is the opposite. The ninety days is a window to apply, not a period of permission, and attending classes during it is not allowed. A student who keeps going to lectures because the semester is mid-way is compounding the problem rather than managing it.

One discrepancy worth knowing about

The official pages describe the start of the ninety days slightly differently. Guide 5552 runs it from losing status. The post-graduation work permit page describes up to 90 days after your study permit expires. For most people those are the same moment, and for some they are not.

If you are close to the edge of that window, do not resolve the difference yourself from an article. Treat the earlier of the two readings as your deadline and get advice from someone licensed in Canada.

Three separate ninety-day clocks

Canada uses ninety days for three different things in this area, which is a genuine source of confusion rather than an excuse for it.

The clockWhat it measures
Restoration windowNinety days to apply to restore status after losing it
Permit validity after study endsGuide 5552 says a study permit becomes invalid 90 days after your study program has been completed
PGWP after an expired permitUp to 90 days after the study permit expires to apply for a PGWP and restore status

Three different starting events. A student who hears "ninety days" and applies it to the wrong one has a date in their head that does not correspond to anything.

A note on the fees, and a broken page

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC's help centre states that there is a CAN$200 fee to restore your status, as well as a CAN$150 fee for the new study permit.

Here is something worth knowing before you budget. On 4 November 2026 two other official IRCC pages, guide 5552 and the PGWP application page, displayed the text "Error loading fee" in the place where the restoration amount should appear.

That is not a reason to distrust the figure above. It is a reason to check the IRCC fee list on the day you pay rather than relying on any page, including this one. When a government's own pages cannot render a fee, an article quoting one from last month is not a safer source.

If you are heading for a PGWP

The expiry date matters here too, and in a way that costs money rather than status.

As of 4 November 2026, the IRCC page on applying for a post-graduation work permit states that you have up to 180 days after you graduate to apply for a PGWP.

As of 4 November 2026, the same IRCC page states that your study permit must be valid, not expired, at the time you submit your application to be eligible to work in Canada while awaiting a decision on your PGWP application.

Read those two together, because they interact. You have a generous window to apply, and a much tighter one to preserve the right to work during processing. A graduate who waits four months and lets the study permit lapse may still be able to apply while losing months of earnings.

As of 4 November 2026, the same IRCC page states that if you do not apply within 90 days, or if 90 days have already passed, you must leave Canada.

Our guide to the Canada post-graduation work permit covers eligibility and the application itself.

Working backwards from the expiry date

Everything above becomes simple if you do one thing: put the expiry date at the centre and count backwards.

  • Find the date. Not your course end date. The date on the permission itself. Write it down.
  • Subtract the slowest document. A new CAS, a fresh set of funds held for the required period, a medical. The slowest one sets your real start date.
  • Subtract travel plans. In the UK, a trip during processing withdraws the application, so any travel has to happen before you lodge or after you are decided.
  • Apply with weeks to spare, not days. An application returned as incomplete three days before expiry leaves you out of status, and the in-time protection is lost.

A diary reminder three months before expiry costs nothing and prevents almost everything on this page.

Why students end up late in the first place

Nobody plans to fall out of status. The reasons are consistent enough to be worth naming, because each one has a fix that costs nothing if you apply it early.

Waiting for a document that was never coming

A student delays lodging because one piece of evidence has not arrived, reasoning that an incomplete application is worse than a late one. In Canada that reasoning is backwards: applying in time protects your status, and a missing item can often be addressed in processing, while a late application has no protection at all. Find out what is genuinely required before you decide to wait.

Confusing the institution's timeline with the government's

Your university tells you enrolment for the next year opens in July. That is their calendar. Your permission expires when it expires, and the two have no relationship. Students synchronise to the academic year and are surprised by a date that was never part of it.

Assuming a decision will arrive before expiry

Processing times are estimates and they move. Applying three weeks before expiry because the published time is two weeks is a plan with no margin, and the consequence of being wrong is losing status rather than waiting longer.

Letting an agent hold the file

Where someone else is lodging on your behalf, you still carry the consequence of a missed date. Ask for the submission confirmation and the reference number on the day it is lodged, and keep them yourself.

If your family is in Pakistan and something happens at home

This deserves its own section because it is the conflict that generates the most painful versions of this problem, and a general page on extensions never mentions it.

A parent falls ill. A funeral has to be attended. A wedding was booked a year ago. Meanwhile an extension is pending, and the UK page says leaving will withdraw the application.

There is no clever answer that makes both things possible, and anyone who offers you one is guessing. What you can do is make the decision properly rather than at an airport.

  • Know the rule before the emergency. If you have read this page, you already do, which is most of the value.
  • Time the application around known travel. A wedding six months out is a planning input, not a surprise. Lodge before or after, not across it.
  • If an emergency happens mid-application, get advice the same day. What withdrawal means for your position, and what your options are, depends on where you are in the process. That is a question for someone regulated in that country.
  • Do not simply fly and hope. The page says the application will be withdrawn. Treat that as what will happen.

Families sometimes ask whether an emergency is an exception. The published page does not describe one. Plan on the rule as written.

Where Pakistani students go wrong

Counting from the course end date

The course and the permission are two different things with two different dates. The permission is the one with legal consequences.

Flying home mid-application

Covered above and the most costly single error in the UK section. The page says the application will be withdrawn.

Carrying on studying during restoration

IRCC says you cannot continue or restart studies until status is restored and a new permit issued. Students keep attending because stopping feels like giving up, and it makes the position worse.

Assuming a late application is just a late application

It is a different process with a different name, a different fee, and restrictions attached. Treating restoration as an extension that happened to be slow is how people end up advised too late.

Leaving a permit to lapse before applying for a PGWP

You may keep the right to apply and lose the right to work during processing. For a graduate budgeting on that income, those are not the same thing.

  • The expiry date on your permission separates two legal positions. Everything else follows from which side of it you are on.
  • In the UK you must apply before the visa expires, and GOV.UK gives its own worked example of what that means.
  • Travel outside the common travel area during UK processing withdraws the application.
  • A new UK course must begin within 28 days of the old visa expiring, and you must apply within 6 months of getting a CAS.
  • Apply in time in Canada and IRCC says you have maintained status and can keep studying while you wait.
  • Miss that date and you have 90 days to apply for restoration, during which you cannot study.
  • Canada uses 90 days for three different clocks. Know which one you are counting.
  • Check fees on the IRCC fee list, because official pages were showing "Error loading fee" on 4 November 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most important deadline?

The expiry date on your current permission. Applying one day before it and one day after it put you in two completely different legal positions, and in Canada the difference decides whether you may keep studying.

Can I keep studying in Canada while my extension is processed?

If you applied before your permit expired, IRCC’s help page says you are allowed to stay because you have maintained your status, and that you can keep studying until you get a decision. That protection comes from applying in time.

Can I keep studying while a restoration application is pending?

No. IRCC states you cannot continue or restart your studies until your status has been restored and a new study permit issued. This is the part students most often get wrong, and continuing to attend classes does not fix it.

How long do I have to restore status in Canada?

Ninety days. The guide and the help centre both say 90 days, although they describe the starting point slightly differently, so if you are close to the edge treat the earlier reading as the safe one and get advice.

What does restoration cost?

IRCC’s help page states a CAN$200 fee to restore status plus CAN$150 for the new study permit. Two other official pages currently display "Error loading fee" where that amount should be, so check the fee list before paying.

When must I apply to extend in the UK?

Before your current visa expires. GOV.UK gives its own example: if your visa expires on 1 December, you must apply before 1 December. There is no grace period built into that sentence.

Can I travel while a UK extension is pending?

No, and this catches people badly. GOV.UK says you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision, and that your application will be withdrawn if you do.

A family emergency in Pakistan came up mid-application. What now?

Leaving will withdraw the application according to the GOV.UK page, so this is a genuine conflict rather than a technicality. Take advice before booking a ticket, because the decision affects your status and not only your application.

Is there a rule about when my new UK course must start?

Yes. GOV.UK says your new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring. Students arranging a gap between courses frequently miss this one.

How long is my CAS valid for an extension?

GOV.UK says you must apply within 6 months of getting a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. A CAS obtained early and sat on can expire before you use it.

How long is a Canadian study permit valid after I finish?

IRCC’s guide says a study permit becomes invalid 90 days after your study program has been completed. That is a separate 90-day clock from restoration and it is easy to confuse the two.

How long do I have to apply for a PGWP?

IRCC’s page says up to 180 days after you graduate. If your study permit has already expired you have up to 90 days after expiry to apply for the PGWP and restore your status, and it says if you do not apply within 90 days you must leave Canada.

Can I work while waiting for my PGWP?

IRCC says your study permit must be valid, not expired, at the time you submit the application to be eligible to work while awaiting a decision. Letting it lapse first costs you the right to work during processing.

What if I have already fallen out of status?

Act today rather than next week, because every clock here runs in days. Stop studying or working, read the restoration rules for your situation, and take advice from someone licensed in that country.

Permission expiring soon, or already expired? This is time-sensitive in a way most immigration questions are not, and a week of delay genuinely changes the options.
