Deferring Your Intake: What It Does to the Visa and the Money for Pakistani Students in the UK, Canada, Australia and USA (2026)

Deferring an intake is allowed by most universities, but it is not free of consequences: the offer, the visa document, your funds and your deposit can all change. In the UK a CAS belongs to a course start date and is valid for a limited time. In Canada the letter of acceptance and your provincial attestation letter are tied to the program you applied for. In Australia a deferral needs the provider to follow the National Code. In the USA the school official has to change the start date in SEVIS and issue a new I-20. This guide sets out the order of steps, the money questions and the written confirmations to collect.

Deferring a study abroad intake and what it changes for the visa and the tuition deposit

Why do students defer, and is it a good idea?

Most deferral requests we see from Lahore have one of five causes: the IELTS or PTE score is not ready, the funds are not yet in place for the required period, a visa was refused and the student wants to reapply for a later intake, a family or health reason has come up, or the student has simply changed their mind about the course. All five are normal. A deferral done early and in writing is usually a clean outcome. A deferral done late, informally or by simply not turning up is where students lose money and sometimes their visa position.

It is also worth saying that a deferral is a request, not a right. A university may refuse, may offer a place only on a different course or intake, or may ask you to withdraw and reapply. The word "deferral" means different things in different offices, and the safest habit is to treat every promise as unconfirmed until it appears in an email from the admissions or international office.

The decision is also not always the right one. If your only problem is a missing document, a short extension for the visa application may solve it without a deferral. If your problem is money, a later intake can help only if the money will actually exist by then. Be honest with yourself before you ask.

What should you do before you ask for a deferral?

Do the thinking first, then write one clear email. A good first step is a short checklist.

  1. Read your offer letter and the university's deferral policy. Many universities publish deadlines, a maximum deferral period and a rule on what happens to conditions.
  2. Check whether a visa has already been applied for or granted. The answer changes the order of steps in every country below.
  3. List what you have paid: application fee, deposit, accommodation booking, health cover, SEVIS fee.
  4. Ask the university for the new start date, the fate of the deposit, whether a fresh offer or letter will be issued, and whether any scholarship carries over.
  5. Wait for the reply in writing before you buy a ticket, cancel a lease or tell your employer you are leaving.

Tip: Send the deferral request from the email address on your application and quote your student or application number. Ask for the answer to be copied to your agent only if you want us in the thread. A reply from a generic address or a phone call is not proof of anything.

What happens to a UK CAS and Student visa?

A UK Student visa application rests on a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the CAS, which the university assigns for a specific course and start date. Our explainer on what a CAS is and how to get one covers the basics. For deferral, three official rules matter.

As of 4 November 2026, GOV.UK says the earliest you can apply for a Student visa from outside the UK is 6 months before your course starts, and the caseworker guidance applies the same limit to the start date on the CAS.

The Student sponsor guidance says a CAS is valid for six months from the date the sponsor assigns it. The same guidance says that if a student's application fails and they wish to reapply, the sponsor must assign a new CAS. A CAS also cannot be reused after it has been used in an application that was granted or refused, according to the caseworker guidance for the Student route published on GOV.UK.

What do those rules mean for a deferral? If you have not applied yet, the simplest outcome is a new start date and, when the time comes, a new CAS for the later intake. If you have a CAS but have not used it, ask whether the university will withdraw it and assign a new one nearer the time, because the old one is tied to the old date. If you have already applied or hold a granted visa, you must get specific written advice before you change anything. We could not find official wording that tells a student with a granted visa exactly what to do if the course start date moves, and we will not guess. The sponsor also has a duty to tell UKVI about changes in a student's circumstances, so a real deferral is something the university reports, and you should expect to hear from them.

The 6-month window and a later intake

Because the application window opens 6 months before the course starts, a student who defers from September to January does not need to rush. The new window opens later too. The risk is the reverse: an old CAS that has expired by the time you are ready, or a visa that was granted for a start date you will not meet. If your plan is to defer and still travel on the visa you have, get the university's written view first.

For wider UK background, our UK hub collects the study guides, and the UK funds changes are worth knowing about before you plan the new date.

What happens in Canada?

Canadian study permits are linked to a designated learning institution, DLI. Your letter of acceptance shows the program and start date, and the provincial or territorial attestation letter, PAL or TAL, is part of the application in most cases. IRCC's documents page says the school gives you the letter of acceptance and that you get the PAL or TAL from your school, and that in most cases you need to accept your offer and pay your tuition fees, in part or in full, to get it. Read our guide on the PAL for a Canadian study permit for the detail.

IRCC's pages we read do not have a section on deferring a start date, so we cannot quote a rule for it. The nearest official wording is for changing schools. As of 4 November 2026, IRCC says a student outside Canada with an approved permit who changes school must submit a new study permit application with a new letter of acceptance. The page also mentions a new valid PAL or TAL where required. The practical lesson is that when the program or school in your letter changes, your application usually has to change with it.

A deferral inside the same school is a softer case, but the safe approach is the same: ask the school whether it will issue a new letter of acceptance with the new start date, and whether your PAL or TAL still matches. Do not travel on an old letter that shows a date you will not meet.

Once you hold a permit, the study permit conditions say you must be enrolled at a DLI unless exempt and must be actively pursuing your studies unless exempt. So a permit is not a place to wait. Plan the visa application for the intake you will actually attend. Our Canada hub gathers the study permit guides.

What happens in Australia?

In Australia the Confirmation of Enrolment, the CoE, shows your course and dates. Our guide on the CoE explains it. Deferral sits under the National Code, Standard 9, which covers deferring, suspending or cancelling an overseas student's enrolment.

As of 4 November 2026, the Department of Education guidance on Standard 9 describes compassionate or compelling circumstances as generally those beyond the control of the overseas student, and says a provider that defers or suspends an enrolment must notify the department through PRISMS.

In plain English, a provider cannot just agree to anything. The rules expect a deferral to rest on a compassionate or compelling reason, such as serious illness or a bereavement, and the provider must record it. A student who simply prefers a later date may find the provider treats it as a withdrawal and a new application. Ask early and ask what the school will treat as acceptable.

If you have a student visa, check the effect on it before you act. Home Affairs' older guidance on changing courses says you do not need to send your CoE to the department, and that moving to a lower AQF level or a non-AQF course will generally need a new student visa. It does not address deferral directly, so we cannot say more than: get advice before changing the course or date on a visa you already hold. Our Australia hub has the related guides.

Refunds if you do not start

The Australian Government's international student page describes a student default as not starting a course you are enrolled in on the agreed starting day, and says you may be entitled to a refund within four weeks in some cases, such as when there is no written agreement or the default resulted from a refused visa. The refund rules are detailed, and the written agreement with your provider is the document that decides most outcomes. Keep it.

What happens in the USA?

In the USA, your Form I-20 shows the program start date, and the designated school official, DSO, controls it in the SEVIS system. Our guide to the USA study visa and the explainer on the I-20 give the background.

As of 4 November 2026, Study in the States says you must talk with your designated school official as soon as possible, and that the DSO can change the start date in SEVIS and issue a new I-20 before travel. The same page says you cannot enter more than 30 days before the new start date, and that you cannot defer once you are in the USA. The page is older than most of the sources in this guide, so read it as background and confirm the process with your own DSO.

The money rule matters. The ICE I-901 FAQ says the fee payment is made for a specific SEVIS ID number, and that a student with a new SEVIS ID must pay the fee on the new record. If your deferral produces a new I-20 with a new SEVIS ID, you may need to pay again, so ask the school before you assume your old receipt works. The same ICE page indicates that the fee is not normally refunded when a student decides not to come, and it describes a short window for refund requests after payment. Read the FAQ itself on the day you act.

If you do not enrol by the start date, the SEVIS record can be terminated for failure to enrol, according to the Study in the States guidance we read. A terminated record is a bigger problem than a polite deferral. The lesson is the same as in the other countries: tell the school before the start date, not after.

What happens to the deposit and tuition?

This is the question families ask first, and the honest answer is that it depends on your contract. Tuition and deposit rules are set by the school and by the law of the country, not by us or by the visa office. A few principles hold in most cases.

  • The offer letter and terms are the contract. Look for words like non-refundable, transferable, or credited to a later intake.
  • A deferral may transfer a deposit; a withdrawal may not. Ask the school to confirm in writing which one your request is.
  • A visa refusal can change the refund position. Several countries have specific refund rules that follow a refused visa, so keep the refusal letter.
  • Fees can change for the new year. A deferred place may carry the later year's tuition. Ask whether your original fee is held.
  • Never pay a second deposit without a written credit note for the first.

When you send money through a bank, keep the transfer advice and the receipt from the school. Our readers also ask about sending funds from Pakistan; the sending rules are separate from the refund rules and are covered in our other guides.

What happens to your funds and bank statements?

Visa officers read bank evidence against the date of application, not the date of the offer. A deferral therefore moves your visa date, and the funds you showed earlier may no longer match what is required. Requirements about how recent or how long-held funds must be differ by country and change over time, so check the current official page for the country and date you now plan to apply.

Two practical points. First, if your family planned the funds around a certain month, such as a property sale or a maturing certificate, a deferral may help, but only if the money truly lands before the new application. Second, an unexplained large deposit made just before a new application draws questions, so keep the source documents. Our guides on proof of funds explain what evidence works for each country.

What about scholarships and accommodation?

A scholarship is a separate promise with its own rules. Some can be deferred with the offer, some are lost, and some require a fresh application. Never assume a scholarship moves with the place. Ask the scholarship office, in writing, and keep the reply.

Accommodation is the same. University halls often have a booking deposit and a cancellation window that closes before the course. Private landlords may hold a room only for a short time. Cancel or move the booking in the same week you get your deferral approval, and ask for the new terms in writing.

Health cover and insurance purchased for the original date should also be checked. Some policies can be moved; others cannot.

The "silent" row is the honest part. Where official sources do not address a deferral directly, we say so, because a confident answer would be a guess. For those gaps the safest route is a written answer from the school and, for visa questions, from the official helpline or a practitioner.

What does a realistic deferral look like?

This example is invented to show a sensible order of steps. It is not a client.

Ayesha holds an unconditional offer for a September start. In June her IELTS is one band short in a single skill, and her family's fixed deposit does not mature until October. She does not apply for the visa. Instead she writes to the admissions office in July with her student number, asks for the January intake, and asks four questions: is the deposit transferable, will the offer letter be reissued, does her scholarship carry over, and will the university issue the visa document nearer the new date.

The university replies in writing. The deposit transfers, a new offer arrives in August, and the scholarship needs a fresh confirmation, which she requests. She books the retest, waits for the deposit to mature, and applies for the visa when the official application window for January opens. She cancels her September accommodation and books January with the new terms. At no point did she travel, resign or pay a second deposit before getting a reply.

The key moves were early timing, written replies, and no spending ahead of approval. Any student can copy them.

Which mistakes cost students the most?

  • Not turning up. A no-show can end a record, trigger a student default and lose the deposit.
  • Relying on a phone call. A verbal yes is not a deferral.
  • Travelling on an old document. A CAS, letter, CoE or I-20 with the wrong date can cause trouble at the border or in a later application.
  • Applying for the visa first. If you already know you will not start, do not apply for the visa and defer afterwards.
  • Assuming a scholarship moves. Confirm it.
  • Ignoring the funds clock. Bank statements that fitted the old date may not fit the new one.
  • Trusting an agent who promises results. No honest adviser can promise a deferral or a visa.

Key takeaways

  • A deferral is a request. Get the new start date, the deposit treatment and the new visa document in writing.
  • The UK visa window opens 6 months before the course, and a CAS is valid for six months from assignment, so timing shapes the whole plan.
  • Canada: a changed letter of acceptance usually means a new permit application, and the IRCC pages we read do not give a direct deferral rule.
  • Australian deferral runs through Standard 9 and the provider must report it, and compassionate or compelling reasons are the usual basis.
  • Only the DSO can change the I-20 start date, and a new SEVIS ID can mean a new fee.
  • Never spend, travel or resign before you hold the written approval.

Frequently asked questions

Can I defer my university offer?

Many universities allow it, but it is a request, not a right. Ask the admissions office in writing for the new intake, the deposit treatment and a reissued offer.

Do I need a new CAS if I defer to a later UK intake?

A CAS is tied to a course and start date and is valid for six months from assignment, so a later intake will typically need a CAS from the university for the new dates. Ask the university to confirm in writing.

When can I apply for the UK Student visa after deferring?

GOV.UK says the earliest you can apply from outside the UK is 6 months before your course starts, so the window follows the new start date.

Will my Canadian study permit application change if I defer?

The IRCC pages we read do not give a direct deferral rule. They say a new letter of acceptance and a new application are needed when a student outside Canada changes school, so ask your school whether your letter and PAL or TAL still match.

What is a compassionate or compelling reason in Australia?

The Department of Education guidance describes these as circumstances generally beyond the control of the student. Ask your provider which evidence it accepts.

Who can change my US start date?

Your designated school official (DSO) can change the start date in SEVIS and issue a new I-20. Talk to your DSO as soon as possible.

Do I pay the US SEVIS fee again if I defer?

ICE says the fee is paid for a specific SEVIS ID and that a student with a new SEVIS ID must pay on the new record. Ask your school whether your deferral creates a new SEVIS ID.

Will I get my deposit back if I defer?

It depends on the offer terms. A deferral often moves the deposit to the new intake, while a withdrawal may not. Get the answer in writing before you pay anything else.

What if my visa was refused and I want to defer?

Keep the refusal letter, tell the university quickly and ask about the refund or transfer rules. Several countries treat a refusal differently from a voluntary withdrawal.

Can I travel on my old visa after deferring?

Do not assume you can. A visa tied to an old start date may no longer match your course. Get written advice from the university and the official visa authority first.

Do scholarships carry over to a deferred intake?

Not automatically. Ask the scholarship provider directly, in writing, and keep the reply.

Do my bank statements still work after a deferral?

Visa officers judge evidence against the date of application, so a later date can mean fresh statements. Check the current official requirement for the new date.
