How early can you arrive in the UK before your course?
As of 29 October 2026, the GOV.UK Student visa application page says you can arrive up to 1 week before your course starts if it lasts 6 months or less, and up to 1 month before if it lasts more than 6 months.
Two numbers, then. A week for a short course, a month for a longer one. The words "up to" matter. They describe the earliest you may arrive, not a date you must use. Many students arrive three or four days before orientation and are perfectly fine.
The detail inside the Immigration Rules
The table in Appendix Student paragraph ST 25.3 gives 1 month before the course start for courses of 6 months or longer and for pre-sessional courses, and 7 days for shorter courses that are not pre-sessional, which differs slightly from the plain GOV.UK wording at exactly six months.
That boundary is narrow, but it shows why you should not rely on a single summary line. Here is the table from the rules, in plain terms.
| Course type | Earliest arrival before start | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 12 months or longer | 1 month | Rules table, ST 25.3 |
| 6 months or longer, under 12 months | 1 month | Rules table, ST 25.3 |
| Pre-sessional, under 6 months | 1 month | Rules table, ST 25.3 |
| Other courses under 6 months | 7 days | Rules table, ST 25.3 |
Most Pakistani students are heading to a one-year master's or a three-year bachelor's, so the one-month line applies. If you are joining a pre-sessional English course or a short programme, confirm the rule with your university and read the start date on your own visa.
Why can you not fly before the visa start date?
The GOV.UK application page states that you must not travel to the UK before the start date given on your visa, no matter when your course starts.
The rule looks harsh, yet the logic is simple. Your permission to enter the UK only exists from the start date on your visa. Fly earlier and you arrive without permission, whatever your course calendar says. An airline may refuse to board you, and a border officer may refuse entry.
How the start date is set
Under ST 25.3 of the Immigration Rules for students, if entry clearance is granted less than 1 month before the course start, permission begins 7 days before your intended date of travel.
In other words, a visa granted early gives you the standard pre-course window, while a visa granted late is shortened to fit your travel plan. Because the date is tied to when the decision is made, the start date is not something you can request. You can only check it once you have the decision.
Where to check the date
GOV.UK says successful applicants receive an eVisa. Look at the decision and your UK Visas and Immigration online account, then confirm the start date before you book. Our guide to the UK eVisa for Pakistani students explains how to access it. Do not book a non-refundable ticket until you have seen the date in writing.
How early can you apply, and what must be ready?
As of 29 October 2026, the GOV.UK Student visa application page says the earliest you can apply from outside the UK is 6 months before you start your course, and the Immigration Rules (paragraph ST 4.1) say the same.
That means a student with a mid-September start can apply from mid-March. It does not mean you should. An application submitted too early may sit alongside documents that expire before the decision. Three items deserve a timing check.
1. The CAS
Paragraph ST 1.2 of the Immigration Rules for students requires the CAS reference to have been issued no more than 6 months before the date of your application, so ask your university to confirm its CAS timing before you rely on it. Our guide to the CAS letter explains how to request one and what to check on it.
2. The TB certificate
The GOV.UK TB test page says the certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray, and the TB rules require it to have been issued in the 6 months immediately before you apply. The test applies when you come for six months or more after living in a listed country, and Pakistan appears on the Home Office clinic list, so most Pakistani applicants need it. Our guide to the TB test for a UK student visa covers clinics and booking. Time the x-ray so the certificate is still valid on the day you submit.
3. Your funds
Your financial evidence must meet the rules on the day you apply, and the funds must have been held for the required period. That period and the amounts change, so read the current GOV.UK page rather than a screenshot from last year. Our step-by-step guide to the UK student visa from Pakistan shows where it fits in the sequence.

What do the main intake dates look like?
The table below uses sample course start dates. They are illustrations, not real university calendars, so replace them with the date on your own CAS.
| Sample course start | Earliest application | Earliest arrival (course over 6 months) |
|---|---|---|
| 14 September 2027 | 14 March 2027 | 14 August 2027, if the visa start date allows |
| 4 October 2027 | 4 April 2027 | 4 September 2027, if the visa start date allows |
| 11 January 2028 | 11 July 2027 | 11 December 2027, if the visa start date allows |
The dates come from counting six months back for the application window and one month back for the arrival window. They are the earliest points. The practical plan sits well inside them.
A sensible application rhythm
- Accept your offer and pay any deposit only after checking that the university is a licensed student sponsor.
- Get the CAS once the university confirms your conditions are met.
- Book the TB test and the visa application centre appointment close together.
- Apply with a clear margin before travel, not on the last possible day.
What if the visa comes late?
As of 29 October 2026, GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK, but it is a usual time, not a promise, and your own case can take longer.
Most students receive their decision in good time, but some do not. If the start of term is close and you have no decision, there are three levers. None of them is magic.
- Tell your university early. Write to the admissions or international office, explain the situation and ask about late arrival or deferral. The sponsor decides, so get its answer in writing.
- Check the priority services. Our guide to priority and super priority service from Pakistan explains what they cost and what they do. They shorten the wait; they do not change the decision.
- Do not buy a non-refundable ticket. Wait for the decision, or buy a flexible fare.

What if you already live in the UK?
As of 29 October 2026, the GOV.UK application page says that if you apply from inside the UK, the earliest you can apply is 3 months before your course starts. The window is shorter because you are extending or switching your permission from within the country, not applying from Pakistan. GOV.UK also says you must apply before your current visa expires and your new course must start within 28 days of that expiry. If you are in that position, read our piece on UK student visa timing and speak to your university's international office before you plan any travel home.
How do you read your decision and check the dates?
Do not skim the decision. Read it in three passes.
- Dates first. Find the visa start date and the expiry date. Compare the start date with your planned flight and your course start date.
- Then the details. Check your name, date of birth, passport number and the sponsor name against your CAS. A spelling slip is easier to fix before you travel than at the border.
- Last, the conditions. Read the study and work conditions attached to your permission. They tell you what you may and may not do once you are in the UK.
If anything looks wrong, contact the Home Office through the route stated on the decision and tell your university at the same time. Keep every email. A calm, documented query a few weeks before departure is far better than a surprise at the airport.
It also helps to log in to your online account before you travel, not after. Confirm that your passport details are linked and that the status shows the right dates. If you change passports before departure, update the record first.
Is arriving early worth the cost?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. A week of settling in helps if you need to find a bank, collect keys, activate your phone, and learn your commute. A full month often costs more than it returns, unless your university runs a long induction or you need to find private accommodation on the ground.
Costs to weigh
- Extra nights in a hostel or short-term let.
- University halls that open only a few days before term.
- Food and transport during the extra days.
- Missed work income at home, if you are leaving a job.
Benefits to weigh
- Time to recover from the journey before classes.
- A better chance of finding good housing if you have not secured it.
- Time to complete university registration and collect documents.
Whatever you choose, keep the visa start date as the hard limit and your accommodation contract as the soft one.
What should you carry on the travel day?
Pack your documents in your hand luggage, not in your checked bag. A sensible set includes your passport, your decision letter and eVisa details, your CAS, your offer letter, proof of accommodation, and evidence of funds in case you are asked. Keep your paperwork organised and answer any questions calmly and honestly.
Before you leave Lahore, check that the name and passport number on every document match your passport. A mismatch is a common cause of delay. Keep a digital copy of everything in your email as backup.
Does your arrival date affect Graduate visa timing?
Not directly, but the intake you choose determines when you finish, and that can matter for the Graduate visa length. As of 29 October 2026, the GOV.UK Graduate visa page says the visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, with 3 years for doctoral graduates.
That rule applies to the date you apply for the Graduate visa, not the date you arrive as a student, and the Graduate application must be made from inside the UK while your student permission is valid. So if you are choosing between a September 2026 and a January 2027 start, think about when you will finish, then check the rule on GOV.UK again closer to the time. Rules change, and the page is the authority.
What does a worked example look like?
This is a constructed illustration, not a client case. A student from Lahore has an offer for a one-year master's starting on 14 September 2027. The CAS shows that date.
- January 2027. She confirms the sponsor licence and accepts the offer.
- Early March 2027. She receives the CAS and books a TB test so the certificate is fresh.
- 14 March 2027 or after. She applies from Pakistan, because the six-month window has opened.
- April 2027. She attends the biometrics appointment and waits for the usual decision time.
- Decision. She reads the visa start date on the decision. If it begins in mid August, she is free to book travel from then.
- Late August 2027. She books her flight for a few days before orientation, with accommodation confirmed from that date.
Notice what she did not do. She did not apply on day one with an old TB certificate. She did not book a ticket before she saw the visa start date. She kept the flight date inside every window.
Which timing mistakes cost students most?
- Booking a flight before the visa decision. The date on the visa decides, not the date you hope for.
- Using a stale TB certificate. Check the validity period against the date you submit.
- Assuming the arrival window applies to every course. Short and pre-sessional courses follow a different line.
- Relying on a summary. Read the current GOV.UK page and your own visa.
- Leaving no margin. A usual decision time is not a promise.
- Forgetting accommodation dates. Halls and tenancies have their own start dates.
- Ignoring your sponsor. The university sets enrolment deadlines the visa does not change.
What are the key takeaways?
- Arrive up to 1 month before a course longer than 6 months, or up to 1 week before a shorter one, as of 29 October 2026.
- Never fly before the start date on your visa.
- Apply no earlier than 6 months before your course, and only when your CAS, TB certificate and funds are ready.
- A usual decision time of 3 weeks is a guide, not a promise.
- Check your own CAS dates and your university's induction dates, not only the national rule.
- Keep a margin and buy flexible tickets until the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly to the UK before my visa start date?
No. GOV.UK says you must not travel before the start date given on your visa, whatever your course start date is. If you fly early, you risk being refused entry. Check the start date on your decision and your eVisa record, then book your ticket for that day or later.
How early can I arrive for a one-year master's course?
A one-year master's is longer than six months, so the GOV.UK page allows arrival up to 1 month before the course starts, provided your visa start date allows it. Your university's accommodation and induction dates may be tighter than the visa, so check both.
What if my course lasts exactly six months?
The sources use slightly different wording at that boundary. GOV.UK says 6 months or less allows 1 week, while the Immigration Rules table uses 6 months or longer for the 1 month period. Ask your university sponsor which applies to your course, and do not buy a ticket on a guess.
Do pre-sessional English courses get a different window?
The Immigration Rules table gives pre-sessional courses of less than 6 months a 1 month period before the start, while other courses under 6 months get 7 days. If you are joining a pre-sessional, confirm the dates with your sponsor and check the start date on your own visa.
How early can a Pakistani student apply for the UK student visa?
From outside the UK, the earliest is 6 months before the course start. You also need a valid CAS and, if required for you, a TB certificate. Applying on day one is not always smart, because your CAS, TB test and funds must all line up.
My course starts in September. When is the earliest I can apply?
Count back six months from your course start date. For a course starting on 14 September, the earliest date is 14 March. Confirm the start date on your CAS, not on the website, because the visa system uses the sponsor's recorded date.
How long does the visa decision take?
GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks from outside the UK. That is a usual time. Applications that need extra checks can take longer, so leave a margin instead of booking a ticket the day you apply.
What if my visa arrives only days before the course starts?
Contact your university's admissions or international office at once. Your sponsor decides what late arrival it accepts, and you should get its agreement in writing. Also check that your visa start date, flight and accommodation fit together.
Does my TB certificate expire before the visa decision?
It can. GOV.UK says the certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of the x-ray, and the rules require it to have been issued in the 6 months before you apply. Book your test close enough to your application date that it is still valid when you submit.
Do I need a BRP card when I arrive?
GOV.UK says successful applicants get an eVisa. Check your UK Visas and Immigration online account and make sure your passport details are linked before you travel. Our separate guide on the eVisa explains what changed.
Is it risky to arrive a month early?
Not for the visa if your start date allows it, but there are practical costs. You may pay for extra weeks of accommodation, and some halls do not open that early. Work rights and course obligations are tied to your course, so use the early days for settling in, not for working extra hours.
Can Border and Bridges help me plan the dates?
Yes. We can check your CAS date, TB test date, funds timing and visa appointment against your intake and suggest a sensible sequence. We do not promise a visa outcome, because the decision belongs to the Home Office, but a clean timeline removes avoidable errors.
