Which English Test Does Your Visa Accept? PTE, Duolingo and UKVI SELT (2026)

Neither Duolingo nor TOEFL appears on the UK's list of approved Secure English Language Tests. Both are accepted by plenty of universities for admission, and neither is a SELT. That gap between what your university accepts and what your visa requires is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this subject, because a test result cannot be converted after the fact. Below is what the official pages actually say, country by country, with each one linked and dated so you can check it before you book anything.

Which English tests are accepted for a UK student visa: SELT providers and approved tests

The two different questions

Almost every problem on this subject comes from treating one question as two, or two as one.

Question one: will my university admit me? That is set by the institution. Universities accept a wide range of tests, set their own minimum scores, and sometimes waive the requirement entirely for applicants from particular backgrounds.

Question two: will the visa accept it? That is set by the government, and the government does not care what your university decided.

A student can hold an unconditional offer, built on a test the university was happy with, and still fail the visa requirement. Nothing has gone wrong procedurally. Two different bodies asked two different questions and the student answered only one.

Ask admissions in writing, and keep the reply. "Which English tests do you accept for this programme, and at what scores?" takes one email. The answer is specific to your course and often differs from the general page on the website. It is also the document you want if anyone later disputes what you were told.

The UK list, in full

The UK is the clearest case because the Home Office publishes the list.

As of 4 November 2026, the GOV.UK guidance on proving your English language abilities states that you can only take a SELT with one of the following providers: Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert and Pearson inside the UK, and PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert and Pearson outside the UK.

The named tests on that page are these.

ProviderApproved tests
IELTS SELT ConsortiumIELTS for UKVI, IELTS Life Skills
LanguageCertLanguageCert International ESOL SELT, LanguageCert Academic SELT, LanguageCert General SELT
PearsonPTE Academic UKVI, PTE Home
PSI Services (UK) LtdSkills for English UKVI
Trinity College LondonIntegrated Skills in English (ISE), Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE)

Read what is absent from that table. Duolingo is not on it. TOEFL is not on it. Neither word appears anywhere on the page.

That is not a comment on either test. Both are serious exams and both are accepted by many universities for admission. They are simply not Secure English Language Tests for UK immigration purposes, and no amount of institutional acceptance changes that.

As of 4 November 2026, the same GOV.UK page lists the Student route among the applications requiring a reading, writing, speaking and listening test, alongside Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual and others.

Why the exact test name matters

This is the detail that costs students an intake, and it is entirely avoidable.

The approved test is not "PTE". It is PTE Academic UKVI. It is not "IELTS". It is IELTS for UKVI. The ordinary versions of those exams are different products, taken at different centres under different arrangements, and a result from the wrong one cannot be upgraded afterwards.

Students book the wrong version for an understandable reason: the ordinary version is often cheaper, more widely available, and the one their friends took for a university application. The booking page does not stop you. The problem appears months later at the visa stage, when there is no time to retake.

We have written separately on the specific comparison that catches most people, IELTS for UKVI versus IELTS Academic, and on the broader question of whether IELTS or PTE suits you better.

Two rules make this impossible to get wrong.

  • Book from the provider's UKVI page, not its general page.
  • Check the booking confirmation says the UKVI version by name before you pay.

How long a result lasts

As of 4 November 2026, the GOV.UK guidance requires the result to have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application.

Count that correctly, because two mistakes are common.

The period runs to the date of your application, not to the date your course starts. A result that is still valid when you begin studying may already have expired when you applied, which is the date that counts.

And it runs from the award date, not the test date. Those are usually close together and occasionally not.

Taking the test early is sensible. Taking it two years and one month early is a retake.

Not sure which version of a test your plan needs? It is a five-minute question and an expensive thing to get wrong. Ask us on WhatsApp at +92 321 4656927 before you book.

The selected course will be filled automatically. Submit saves the enquiry directly to our team, and Send WhatsApp opens a pre-filled WhatsApp message with the same details.

This field is optional.

Canada: no test on the document list

Canada works differently, and the difference is worth stating plainly because students assume every country runs a UK-style approved list.

As of 4 November 2026, IRCC's page on the documents you need for a study permit does not name any English or French language test. The documents it lists are the letter of acceptance, a provincial or territorial attestation letter, proof of identity, proof of funds, a letter of explanation, a medical exam, a police certificate and others depending on your local visa office.

So for most students the English requirement they actually have to satisfy for Canada is the one their institution sets, not one IRCC publishes. That is why two Pakistani students can be admitted to Canadian colleges on completely different tests.

Two cautions on that, because this is an area where a half-understood rule does damage.

  • Specific streams and specific programmes can carry their own language conditions. The absence of a test on a general document list is not a statement that no test is ever required in any circumstance.
  • A strong language result still helps a study permit application, because it supports the credibility of your study plan even where it is not a listed document.

Separately, language tests do appear in Canadian immigration once you move past studying. Our guide to the PGWP language test covers the tests that matter at that stage, which are not the same ones.

Choosing a test when you are applying to several countries

Most Pakistani students apply to more than one country, and then pick a test as though they had picked one.

Work backwards from the strictest requirement on your list, not the most convenient. If the UK is anywhere in your plan, the UKVI version of a test is the safe booking, because it satisfies the UK requirement and is still a recognised result elsewhere. Booking the ordinary version because Canada does not publish a list, and then adding the UK later, means paying twice.

Three questions settle it before you book.

  • Which countries are genuinely on my list, including the ones I might add in six months?
  • Does any of them require a named test for the visa, as opposed to for admission?
  • Have I confirmed, in writing, that each institution accepts the version I am about to book?

Students applying without IELTS in particular should read the country-specific position rather than a general claim that it is possible. We have covered that for the USA, and the answer there is not the answer everywhere.

Reading a score requirement properly

Two applicants with the same overall band can have very different outcomes, and the reason is almost always in the detail under the headline number.

Requirements usually come in two parts: an overall score, and a minimum in each component. A student who reads only the first and scores well overall while dropping a component below the floor has not met the requirement. The overall number is the one everybody quotes and the component minimum is the one that fails people.

Three things to check in any score requirement before you decide you have met it.

  • Is there a per-component minimum, and what is it? Writing is the component Pakistani applicants most often fall short on, and it is also the hardest to lift quickly.
  • Whose requirement is this? A university minimum and a visa minimum can differ, and the higher one governs.
  • Does the course have its own, higher, requirement? Departments frequently set a bar above the institution's general one, particularly for teaching, nursing, law and anything with a professional registration attached.

Do not plan to the exact minimum. A result one mark above the floor leaves no room for a remark, a bad day or a requirement that rises between application cycles. Aim comfortably past it where you can.

Taking the test in Pakistan

The practical side matters as much as the rules, because an administrative problem on test day produces the same result as a low score.

Book early. Seats around peak intake periods in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad go quickly, and a date three weeks later than you wanted can push the whole application into the next cycle. Book as soon as you know you need the test, not once the offer arrives.

Identity has to match exactly. You will book and sit the test on a passport, and the name on that passport has to be the name on everything else in your file. Pakistani applicants frequently hold documents with different spellings or name orders across a CNIC, a passport and school certificates. Resolve that before test day, because a mismatch between your test result and your application is a problem at exactly the wrong moment.

Check your passport validity before booking. A passport that expires during the application cycle creates work you do not need while you are also waiting on a result.

Keep the reference number. Results are verified online using a unique reference, so that number matters as much as the certificate. Save it somewhere that is not only your phone.

If you have already taken the wrong test

This happens often enough to deserve a plan rather than a panic.

First, establish exactly what you took. The booking confirmation and the result will name the product, and "IELTS" on a certificate is not the same information as "IELTS for UKVI". Check the document rather than your memory of what you booked.

Second, work out whether it is actually wrong for your plan, or only wrong for part of it. A non-UKVI result can be perfectly good for an admission that is already granted while being unusable for the visa. Those are separate problems and only one of them may need solving.

Third, if you do need to retake, book the correct version immediately rather than waiting to confirm. Dates are the constraint, not money, and a booking can usually be moved more easily than an intake can.

What not to do: do not submit a result hoping it will be accepted, and do not let anyone submit one on your behalf on that basis. A result that does not meet a stated requirement is a refusal with a fee attached, and it puts a refusal on your record for the sake of avoiding a retake.

Where Pakistani students go wrong

Assuming the university's answer is the visa's answer

The most common error on this page, and the whole reason it exists. An offer letter is not a visa decision.

Booking the non-UKVI version

Covered above. It is cheaper, more available, and wrong if the UK is in your plan.

Trusting an agent's list over the official one

Lists circulate on WhatsApp and they are frequently a year or two out of date. The GOV.UK page carries its own last updated date at the bottom. Look at it.

Taking Duolingo because it is cheaper and quicker

It is both of those things, and for a university that accepts it that can be a sensible choice. Our guide to the Duolingo English Test covers where it works. What it cannot do is satisfy a UK visa requirement, and a student who takes it for that purpose has spent money on the wrong exam.

Letting the result expire while the application is prepared

The two years runs to the application date. Files that take eight months to assemble eat into that window faster than people expect.

What to do before you book

Four steps, in this order, and the whole thing takes an afternoon.

  • List every country you might apply to. Include the ones you consider unlikely, because adding one later is what forces the retake.
  • Check each one's official position. For the UK that is the SELT page linked above. For others, the government's own site rather than an agent's summary.
  • Email each institution. Ask which tests and scores they accept for your specific programme, and keep the reply.
  • Book the version that satisfies the strictest requirement, from the provider's own UKVI page where the UK is involved, and check the confirmation names it.

An hour spent on this is the cheapest insurance in the whole application. A retake is a fee plus a delay, and the delay is usually the part that costs an intake.

  • Neither Duolingo nor TOEFL appears on the UK's approved SELT list. Neither word is on the page.
  • University acceptance and visa acceptance are two separate questions set by two different bodies.
  • The approved UK tests are named specifically. PTE Academic UKVI is not PTE Academic.
  • A UK result must have been awarded in the two years before the application date.
  • The test must be taken with an approved provider at an approved location.
  • IRCC's study permit document list does not name a language test. The requirement you meet is usually your institution's.
  • If the UK is anywhere in your plan, book the UKVI version first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Duolingo accepted for a UK student visa?

Duolingo does not appear on the GOV.UK list of approved Secure English Language Tests. The approved providers are Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LanguageCert, Pearson and, outside the UK, PSI Services. A university accepting Duolingo for admission is a separate question from what the visa requires.

Is TOEFL accepted for a UK student visa?

TOEFL does not appear on the approved SELT list either. That surprises people because it is one of the best known tests in the world, and it is widely accepted by universities. Acceptance by a university and approval as a SELT are different things.

What is a SELT?

A Secure English Language Test is one of a named set of tests, taken with an approved provider at an approved location, that the Home Office accepts as proof of English for immigration purposes. The list is published on GOV.UK and it changes.

Which tests are on the UK list?

As published: IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, LanguageCert International ESOL SELT or Academic SELT or General SELT, PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Home, Skills for English UKVI, and Trinity College London ISE or GESE. Read the page before booking, because the names matter.

I booked PTE Academic, not PTE Academic UKVI. Is that a problem?

The approved test is named specifically. Booking the ordinary version of a test whose UKVI version is the approved one is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes a student makes, because the result cannot be converted afterwards.

How long is a SELT valid?

The GOV.UK guidance says the result must have been awarded in the two years before the date of your application. Count from the award date to the application date, not to the course start date.

Does Canada require a language test for a study permit?

IRCC’s list of documents you need for a study permit does not name a language test. For most students the English requirement they actually meet is their institution’s admission requirement rather than an immigration one. Check both, because they are set by different people.

So can I use Duolingo for Canada?

That depends on the institution admitting you, not on IRCC’s document list. Ask the university in writing which tests it accepts for your specific programme, and keep the reply.

Which routes need a SELT in the UK?

The GOV.UK page lists the Student route among those needing a reading, writing, speaking and listening test, alongside Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker and others. Settlement, citizenship, parent and partner routes are listed as needing a speaking and listening test.

Can my university waive the English test?

A university can waive its own admission requirement. It cannot waive an immigration requirement. Where the visa route requires a SELT, a university waiver does not replace it, and students who conflate the two find out at the visa stage.

My test centre is not on the approved list. Does that matter?

Yes. The requirement is a named test taken with an approved provider at an approved location. A correct test at a centre that is not approved is not an approved result.

Do I need to send the certificate?

The GOV.UK page describes results being verified online using a unique reference number. Keep that number safe, and keep the certificate too, because institutions often want it even where the visa process does not.

Which test should I take if I am applying to several countries?

Work backwards from the strictest requirement in your list rather than the easiest. A test accepted everywhere you are applying is worth more than a cheaper one you have to retake, and retaking costs you an intake as well as a fee.

Where is the authoritative answer?

For the UK, the GOV.UK SELT page, which carries its own last updated date. For the institution, a written reply from its admissions office. Both change, so check them yourself rather than relying on an article or a forum, including this one.

Applying to more than one country and not sure which test covers you? Getting this right once is cheaper than getting it wrong and retaking.
