From a UK Student Visa to a Skilled Worker Visa: What Pakistani Graduates Need in 2026

Yes, a Pakistani graduate holding a UK Student visa can switch to a Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK, provided the course is finished or the job starts after it ends, the employer holds a sponsor licence, and the salary clears both the cash floor and the going rate for the occupation code. The salary test is where most offers fail, and it fails quietly, because a number that sounds generous in rupees can still sit below the rate the Home Office attaches to that job.

Switching from a UK Student visa to a Skilled Worker visa for Pakistani graduates

Can you switch from a Student visa without leaving the UK?

You can. The Home Office calls it switching, and it is made online from inside the UK rather than by flying home and applying at a visa centre in Islamabad.

If you are in the UK on a Student visa you must also have completed the course you were sponsored to study, or have a job start date that falls after the course finishes, or be 24 months into a full time PhD.

One rule that catches people out

Do not leave the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man while the decision is pending. The application is withdrawn if you do. A funeral at home, a cousin’s wedding, a cheap flight in a gap between jobs: each of those has cost somebody a switch that was otherwise sound.

Some visa categories cannot switch at all. Visit visas, short term student visas, seasonal worker visas and a few others are excluded outright, and a person in one of those has to leave and apply from abroad. A Student visa is not on that excluded list.

What does the job itself have to look like?

Three tests sit on the job rather than on you.

  1. Your employer holds a Home Office sponsor licence and issues you a certificate of sponsorship.
  2. The role maps to an eligible occupation code, and the description matches what you will actually do.
  3. Pay clears the salary rules for that code, on both limbs of the test.

Occupation codes decide more than job titles

Every role carries a four digit code, and eligibility attaches to the code rather than to the words on the contract. A code listed as higher skilled is straightforwardly eligible. A code listed as medium skilled only works if the job sits on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list, and most do not.

Ask the employer for the code before you get attached to the offer. A recruiter who cannot tell you the code has probably not spoken to whoever handles sponsorship.

The employer side has a price attached

As of 24 September 2026, the Home Office fee table prices a worker sponsor licence at £611 for a small sponsor and £1,682 for a large one, with each certificate of sponsorship at £525.

GOV.UK describes around eight weeks to process a sponsor licence application. For a small firm hiring its first sponsored worker, that is the real obstacle, and a graduate who raises it in week one of the conversation is far more likely to get a yes than one who raises it in week six.

How much does the salary have to be?

As of 24 September 2026, the GOV.UK page on the Skilled Worker job requirement sets the standard salary floor at the higher of £41,700 per year or the going rate for the occupation code.

Both tests, not either. A salary of 42,000 pounds fails if the going rate for that code is 45,000.

As of 24 September 2026, GOV.UK sets the discounted floor at £33,400 per year together with 70 per cent of the standard going rate, and a recent graduate or a current Student visa holder studying at bachelor level or above is one of the groups it covers.

As of 24 September 2026, GOV.UK puts the non STEM PhD route at £37,500 per year with 90 per cent of the going rate, while a relevant STEM doctorate drops to £33,400 with 80 per cent of the going rate.

The check worth doing before you accept anything: get the occupation code, open the published going rates table, and work out 70 per cent of the rate for that code. Compare it with the offer. If the offer is lower, the conversation to have is about salary, now, not about visas later.

What is the graduate discount, and what does it cost you?

The discount exists because the Home Office accepts that somebody starting a career will not be paid the mid career rate. It is real money off the threshold and it is the single reason many Pakistani graduates can switch at all.

You qualify if one of these fits on the date you apply.

  • Under 26 years old when the application goes in.
  • Currently on a Student visa studying at bachelor level or above, or you were within the last two years with a Student or visit visa as your most recent one.
  • Currently on a Graduate visa, or within the last two years on the same basis.
  • Working towards a recognised qualification in a UK regulated profession.
  • Working towards full registration or chartered status in the sponsored job.

The catch

Taking the discounted salary caps your combined Skilled Worker, Graduate and Tier 2 permission at four years in total, and time already spent on a Graduate visa counts towards that.

That ceiling is the part nobody mentions in a WhatsApp group. Two years on a Graduate visa followed by a discounted Skilled Worker grant leaves you two years, not five. Plan the extension onto the full rate before the ceiling arrives, rather than discovering it in year four.

What does the switch cost in cash?

As of 24 September 2026, GOV.UK gives the in country application fee as £943 for three years or less and £1,865 for more than three years, per person.

As of 24 September 2026, the immigration health surcharge page charges £1,035 a year on a work application, against £776 a year on a student one.

The surcharge jump is the part that surprises students. Moving from a student rate to a work rate raises the annual charge by roughly a third, and it is paid upfront for the whole grant rather than yearly. Our note on the UK immigration health surcharge for Pakistani students sets out how the charge is calculated.

What a three year switch adds up to

ItemWho paysAmount
In country application fee, three years or lessUsually you£943
In country application fee, more than three yearsUsually you£1,865
Health surcharge, work rateUsually you£1,035 a year
Certificate of sponsorshipThe employer£525
Sponsor licence, if they do not hold oneThe employer£611 small, £1,682 large
Money to support yourselfYou, or certified by the sponsor£1,270 held 28 days

You need at least 1,270 pounds held for 28 consecutive days, with day 28 inside the 31 days before you apply, unless your sponsor certifies maintenance or you have held a valid visa in the UK for twelve months.

A job on the immigration salary list carries a lower application fee, 628 pounds for three years or less, and a lower salary requirement with it. Worth a check even though the list is short.

What English standard applies now?

Switching from a different visa now needs English at level B2 across reading, writing, speaking and listening, not the B1 that older guidance described.

Most Pakistani graduates will not sit a test for it. A degree taught in English and awarded by a UK institution proves the requirement on its own, and so does a degree taught in English from elsewhere once Ecctis confirms the equivalence.

From 26 March 2027 the settlement stage itself moves to B2 in speaking and listening, so a graduate planning a long UK future should treat B2 as the working standard rather than a hurdle to clear once.

If you came to the UK through the usual route, the language evidence is already in your file. Our explainer on the CAS letter for UK study covers the stage where that evidence was first assembled.

How does the timing work?

As of 24 September 2026, GOV.UK says a switch decision usually arrives within 8 weeks, and the published fee table prices a priority service at £500 and a super priority service at £1,000 where you are told you may use them.

The certificate of sponsorship has its own clock. It must have been issued no more than three months before the application, and the start date it names must be no more than three months after the application date. Employers who issue one early and then delay the paperwork create a problem they do not see.

The sequence that works

  1. Secure the offer and confirm the occupation code and salary against the going rate.
  2. Confirm the employer holds a licence, or start the licence conversation immediately.
  3. Receive the certificate of sponsorship.
  4. Apply online before your Student visa expires, and before the certificate ages past three months.
  5. Prove identity through the app or at a service point, and stay in the UK until the decision.

Your digital status matters here too, since the physical card has gone. Our note on the UK eVisa replacing the BRP explains how the record is held and shared.

Graduate route first, or straight to Skilled Worker?

Both are legitimate. The right answer depends on one question: do you have a sponsored offer in hand?

Switch straight to Skilled WorkerGraduate route first
Needs a job offerYes, from a licensed sponsorNo
Needs a sponsor licenceYesNot at this stage
Salary testApplies immediatelyApplies later, when you switch
Counts towards settlementYes, as Skilled Worker timeNo
Effect on the four year ceilingStarts the clockTime on it counts towards the ceiling if you later use the discount
Best whenThe offer is real and the sponsor is readyYou are still searching

Graduates with an offer sometimes take the Graduate route anyway, on the theory that it is simpler. It is simpler, and it also spends time that would otherwise have counted towards settlement. The detail of the route sits in our guide to the UK Graduate route visa for Pakistani students.

What goes wrong for Pakistani graduates?

  • Accepting an offer that clears 33,400 pounds but not 70 per cent of the going rate for the code.
  • Leaving the country while the switch is pending, which withdraws the application outright.
  • Assuming a medium skilled code is eligible because the job sounds professional.
  • Raising sponsorship with a small employer too late for a licence to be processed in time.
  • Letting the certificate of sponsorship go stale past the three month window.
  • Budgeting the student surcharge rate and being short when the work rate is charged.

The one that ends applications

Applying after the Student visa has already expired. Everything else on this page can be repaired with money or patience. That cannot. Diary the expiry date the week you get your results, and work backwards from it.

Families in Lahore often ask us to look at an offer after the contract is signed. By then the salary is fixed and the code is fixed, and the only remaining question is whether the application will fail. Bring it earlier. The rules around dependants and long term stay have also shifted, and our note on what changed for UK student dependants and settlement sets out the current shape.

A worked example: Zainab finishes an MSc in Manchester

Zainab is 24, from Gujranwala, finishing an MSc in data analytics. Her Student visa runs to 31 January. She has an offer from a mid sized firm at 36,500 pounds.

  • Early October: she asks for the occupation code and checks the going rates table. Seventy per cent of the rate for that code is 34,900. Her offer clears it, and clears the 33,400 floor.
  • Mid October: the employer confirms it already holds a sponsor licence. No eight week wait.
  • 7 November: the certificate of sponsorship is issued, with a start date in January.
  • 14 November: she applies online. Fee of 943 pounds, plus the health surcharge at the work rate for the length of the grant. Her UK degree covers the English requirement.
  • Early January: decision. Well inside the eight week guide, and comfortably before her Student visa expires.

Her friend Talha, same course, took an offer at 33,800 pounds in a different code where 70 per cent of the going rate works out at 36,200. The offer beats the cash floor and fails the going rate. He found out in December, negotiated the salary up in January, and applied on 20 January with eleven days to spare. It worked, but the eleven days were unnecessary and the stress was entirely self inflicted.

Nothing separated those two graduates except a check that takes ten minutes. If you are still at the earlier stage, our step by step guide to the UK student visa from Pakistan covers the beginning of the same journey.

Key takeaways

  • A Student visa can be switched to Skilled Worker from inside the UK, with the course complete or the job starting after it ends.
  • The salary must clear both a cash floor and a percentage of the going rate for the occupation code.
  • £41,700 is the standard floor, £33,400 the discounted one for recent graduates and the under 26s.
  • The discount caps combined Skilled Worker, Graduate and Tier 2 permission at four years.
  • Expect £943 or £1,865 for the application, plus £1,035 a year in health surcharge.
  • English is now B2 for a switch, and a UK degree taught in English proves it.
  • Do not leave the UK while the decision is pending, and never apply after your visa has expired.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to a Skilled Worker visa before my results are published?

You can apply if your job start date falls after your course has finished, so waiting for a graduation ceremony is not required. What matters is that the course itself is complete, or that the start date sits after the end of it.

Do I have to leave the UK and apply from Pakistan?

No, not if you hold a Student visa. The switch is made from inside the UK, and you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until the decision comes, because the application is withdrawn if you do.

Is the Graduate visa a better first step than switching straight away?

It depends on whether you already have a sponsored job offer. With a licensed sponsor ready, switching directly saves you a fee and starts your qualifying time earlier. Without one, the Graduate route buys you time to look, and you can switch later.

My salary offer is 34,000 pounds. Is that enough?

It clears the discounted floor, but that is only half the test. You also have to reach 70 per cent of the going rate for your specific occupation code, and for some codes 70 per cent is well above 34,000. Check the code, not the headline.

What if my employer has never sponsored anyone?

They need a sponsor licence first, priced at 611 pounds for a small business and 1,682 pounds for a large one, and GOV.UK describes roughly eight weeks to process one. Raise it early. Many small employers say no simply because nobody explained the cost and the timeline.

Does my UK degree count as proof of English?

Yes. A degree taught in English and awarded by a UK institution proves the requirement, which is why most Pakistani students switching after a UK masters do not sit a separate test.

How long will the visa be granted for?

Up to the length of your certificate of sponsorship, and the fee you pay depends on whether that is three years or less or longer. If you used the discounted salary, watch the four year ceiling on combined permission.

Can my spouse switch with me?

A partner or child already in the UK does not switch automatically. They apply themselves, either at the same time as you or before their current visa runs out, and there are extra conditions where the main applicant is sponsored in a medium skilled job.

Does the time count towards settlement?

Skilled Worker is a route that can lead to settlement, but the qualifying period and the English standard have both been moving. Take advice on your own timeline rather than assuming the rule you read two years ago still holds.

What happens if my visa expires while the decision is pending?

Apply before the current visa expires and your existing conditions generally continue while the application is decided. Applying after expiry is a different and much worse position, so the date you press submit matters more than almost anything else.

Is the immigration salary list worth checking?

Yes, because a job on it carries both a lower salary requirement and a lower application fee. It is a short list and most graduate roles are not on it, but two minutes of checking costs nothing.

Can Border and Bridges handle this from Pakistan?

We advise on the structure, the salary test and the document set, and we work with families here while the graduate is in the UK. We will also tell you plainly when an offer does not meet the going rate, because an application built on a salary that fails the code is money spent on a refusal.

Holding a UK offer and not sure it will pass the salary test?

Border and Bridges Pvt Ltd has worked with Pakistani students since 2016 from our office in Johar Town, Lahore, and we are verified by SECP, FBR, ICEF and the British Council. Send us the job title, the occupation code, the salary and your current visa expiry date. We will check the offer against the published going rate and tell you where it stands, including when the honest answer is that the salary needs to move before anyone applies.
