US SEVP-Certified School Check Before an F-1 Visa: A Guide for Pakistani Students (2026)
A Pakistani student can only get an F-1 visa for a US school that is SEVP-certified, because only a certified school can issue the Form I-20 the visa depends on. The official School Search on Study in the States takes about ten minutes. This guide shows how to run it, what it does and does not prove, how it links to your I-20 and visa, the warning signs with agents, and what to do if a school loses certification.

What does SEVP-certified mean, and why does it decide your F-1 visa?
Every F-1 student visa starts with a document, the Form I-20. A consular officer in Islamabad will not look at your finances or your plans until you can show it. And a school can issue an I-20 only if it holds a specific permission from US immigration authorities. That permission is called SEVP certification.
Only schools certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, known as SEVP, can accept international students, and the Study in the States F-1 guide makes choosing a certified school the very first step.
The State Department says the same thing from the visa side. Its student visa page starts by telling you to apply to an SEVP-approved school, and says the school will issue the Form I-20 once you are accepted. So the certification check is not a formality. It sits upstream of everything else in your file. Our guide on what a US I-20 form is and how Pakistani students get one shows what the document contains once you have it.
Who SEVP is
SEVP is the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, run inside US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Study in the States describes it as the only government entity that can certify a school to issue Forms I-20. That is why a letter from a recruiter, a college brochure or a flattering ranking cannot replace the check.
Why Pakistani applicants should be careful
Pakistani students are targeted by agents who sell admissions to unfamiliar institutions, sometimes with fast tracked offers and low fees. Some are perfectly legitimate certified colleges. Some are not. You cannot judge by the brochure. You judge by the official search and by reading the fine print on your own documents.
How do you check a US school step by step?
The check takes about ten minutes. Do it before you pay an application fee, a deposit or anything else.
- Open the official School Search. It is on the Study in the States website of the Department of Homeland Security.
- Type the school name. Use the name on your offer letter. Then try the name on the school's own website, in case they differ.
- Read the result card. Look for F-1 certification. Green and blue icons show whether the school is certified for F-1 or M-1 students.
- Open multi-campus cards. Where a school has more than one campus, the card expands with an arrow to show every campus. A star marks the main campus.
- Match the campus and programme. Your offer and your I-20 must name the campus you will attend.
- Save a dated screenshot. It is your record that you checked, and the page can change.
- Ask the school in writing. A short email asking the admissions office to confirm that it is SEVP-certified for F-1 students, and which designated school official will issue your I-20, gives you a trail.
The School Search page on Study in the States lets you search by school name, location, education type or visa type, and it shows the schools and programmes that can enroll F-1 and M-1 students.
Tip: Search two spellings and one acronym. Colleges are often listed under a legal name that differs from the marketing name. If you find a similar but not identical name, do not assume it is the same school. Ask the admissions office to explain the link.
If the school is not on the search
Stop. Do not pay a deposit. Ask the school for its evidence of certification. If it cannot give one, or says it is "in process", treat that as no certification today. A school that is still waiting cannot issue a valid I-20 for an F-1 visa.
What does the search tell you, and what does it leave out?
It tells you one thing well: whether SEVP has certified the school to enroll F-1 or M-1 students. It does not tell you several other things you still need to judge.
What it does not tell you
- Quality. Certification is an immigration permission. It is not a ranking and not an endorsement of the degree.
- Accreditation. The academic recognition of the school is a separate question. Check it through the school's own accreditation statement and independent sources.
- Your programme. A certified school may not run the course you were sold. Match the programme on your I-20.
- Cost and refunds. The search says nothing about tuition, scholarships or what you get back if the visa is refused.
- Future status. A school that is certified today could lose certification later.
Certification does not last forever
ICE says certified schools have to recertify every two years to show they still meet the record keeping and reporting rules. That is one reason the school's status can change, and one reason to re-check the search on the day before you pay the SEVIS fee and again before you fly.
F-1 and M-1 are different
F-1 is for academic study and English programmes at colleges, universities and similar schools. M-1 is for vocational and technical study. A school certified for one is not automatically certified for the other, so read which icon is lit. This guide focuses on F-1 because that is what most Pakistani degree students apply for, and you can read the next steps in our guide on the US SEVIS I-901 fee for Pakistani students.
How does the school check connect to your I-20 and your visa?
Think of the process as a chain. The chain is only as strong as its first link.
- First, choose a certified school and apply for admission.
- The school accepts you, and its designated school official issues your Form I-20 through the SEVIS system.
- Next comes the I-901 SEVIS fee. Keep the receipt, checking that the SEVIS ID on the receipt matches the one on your I-20.
- Then complete your visa application, attend the interview and carry the I-20 with you.
- Finally, travel and arrive, and your school registers you in the system.
Study in the States describes this five step order in its F-1 guide, and the State Department page lists the same sequence. If step one is wrong, every later step rests on a faulty base. The form you fill in next, covered in our guide to the DS-160 for a US student visa, will ask for the school name and address exactly as they appear on the I-20, so the match matters twice.
Check the details on the I-20 itself
When the I-20 arrives, read it slowly. Confirm the school name, the campus, your programme, the start date and your own name as it appears on your passport. Mistakes found now can be fixed with the school. Mistakes found at the interview cost you an appointment.
Timing of arrival
Both the State Department and Study in the States say a new F-1 student can enter the United States no more than 30 days before the programme start date. Build your flight plan around the start date on the I-20, not around the date your visa label is ready.
What should you watch for with agents and recruiters?
Most agents are honest, but a few pressure students, and the cost of one bad choice is a year of fees and a lost visa. ICE publishes plain guidance for students on this point. Its school alerts page tells students that you do not need a recruiter to get a student visa or to transfer schools, and that recruiters should not hold your Form I-20.
Want a neutral check before you pay a US school? Send the school name and your offer letter on WhatsApp or call +92 321 4656927. Border and Bridges will run the official search with you.
Warning signs
- The agent holds your original I-20 or passport and will not hand it back until you pay more.
- The school name on the offer differs from the name on the official search, and nobody can explain why.
- You are told the school is "in process" and the I-20 will follow after you pay.
- The deposit goes to a personal account.
- You are promised that the interview will be easy because of the school choice.
None of these proves fraud on its own. Several together mean you should stop and ask for evidence. A legitimate school answers a certification question in one line.
What a good agent does differently
A good agent shows you the official search result, lets you run it yourself, explains the refund terms, keeps your documents in your hands and is clear about what happens if the visa is refused. They also tell you what they cannot control: the consular decision.
What happens if your school loses SEVP certification?
It is rare, but it happens, and it can leave a student with little time. ICE publishes a school alerts page that lists schools affected by certification withdrawals, with the effective date and the date SEVIS access ends for each. It also tells students what to do.
The ICE guidance says that if you get a letter from SEVP you should follow its instructions. It will go to the US address your school has on file. Before the SEVIS record termination date you generally need to transfer to another certified school, change status or leave the United States, and in some cases complete your programme. If you do nothing, the record is terminated and you are treated as out of status.
Older Study in the States guidance says that if the school stays decertified you have 30 days from its withdrawal to leave the United States, transfer to another certified school or change status, while the current ICE alerts page ties your deadline to the SEVIS termination date given for each school.
If you have not travelled yet
ICE says that if you have not entered the United States, the I-20 and visa for that school will not let you enter. You should apply to another SEVP-certified school. That would mean a new I-20 and, depending on timing, a new visa application, which is why checking before you pay is the cheaper path. Our guide to US F-1 school transfers and the new I-20 explains the normal transfer process for students already in the country.
Who to ask for help
The SEVP Response Center number published by ICE is 703-603-3400, and the same number appears on the ICE school alerts page. Use your designated school official first, and keep every letter and email.
What do the different search results mean for you?
| What you find | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| School listed, F-1 certified, campus matches | The school can issue an I-20 for your programme. | Save a dated screenshot and ask for the refund policy. |
| School listed, different campus on your offer | The campus on your paperwork may not be the certified one. | Ask the school in writing to confirm the campus before you pay. |
| School listed for M-1 only | It cannot enroll you as an F-1 student. | Choose another school or a different course type. |
| School not listed | It cannot issue a valid I-20 for an F-1 visa. | Do not pay. Ask for evidence or choose another school. |
| School on the ICE alerts list | Certification has been withdrawn or ended. | Do not enroll. Pick a certified school. |
The middle rows catch the most people. A student sees the right brand name and assumes the right campus and the right visa type. Read the card, not the logo.
What does the check look like on a real timeline?
Take Bilal, a computer science graduate from Lahore applying for a fall 2027 master's in the United States. The details are illustrative.
- October 2026: He shortlists six schools and runs each on the official search. One is not found, so he drops it.
- December 2026: He applies to five schools and saves a dated screenshot for each.
- March 2027: He gets three offers. He emails each admissions office to confirm F-1 certification and the campus.
- April 2027: He accepts one offer and reads the refund policy before paying the deposit to the school's named account.
- May 2027: The I-20 arrives. He checks the name, campus, start date and SEVIS ID, then pays the SEVIS fee and keeps the receipt.
- June 2027: He prepares funds, the visa fee and his DS-160, reading our notes on the US visa MRV fee for F-1 students.
At no point did he trust a brochure. Each step produced a record.
What mistakes do Pakistani applicants make?
- Trusting a list from an agent. Always run your own search on the official site.
- Treating certification as accreditation. One is an immigration permission and the other is academic recognition.
- Ignoring the campus. Multi-campus schools can be listed on one card.
- Paying before reading the refund policy. If a visa is refused, you want to know the handling charge and the timeline.
- Letting someone keep the I-20. It is your document. ICE says recruiters should not hold it.
- Skipping the second check. Search again before you pay the SEVIS fee and before you fly.
Funds are the other half of the file. Read our guide to the bank statement needed for a USA F-1 student visa from Pakistan so your school choice and your financial evidence agree.
Key takeaways
- An F-1 visa starts with a Form I-20, and only an SEVP-certified school can issue one. Check the school first.
- Use the official School Search on Study in the States, and match the school, campus and programme to your I-20.
- Certification is an immigration permission, not accreditation or a quality ranking. Judge the degree separately.
- Certified schools recertify every two years, so status can change. Re-check before you pay and before you fly.
- Never let a recruiter hold your I-20. ICE says recruiters should not, and you do not need one to get a visa.
- If a school loses certification, follow the SEVP letter and the SEVIS termination date given for that school.
Frequently asked questions
What does SEVP-certified mean?
SEVP stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, part of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A school is SEVP-certified when SEVP has approved it to enroll F-1 and M-1 students and issue Form I-20. Only a certified school can issue the I-20 that your visa application depends on.
Can I get an F-1 visa for a school that is not on the SEVP list?
No. An F-1 visa application needs a Form I-20 from an SEVP-certified school. The State Department tells applicants to apply to an SEVP-approved school first, and Study in the States says only certified schools can accept international students. If a school cannot issue a genuine I-20, there is no F-1 route through it.
Is SEVP certification the same as accreditation?
No. Certification is an immigration permission to enroll international students. Accreditation is a separate quality recognition of the school and its degrees. A school can be certified without being a good fit for your career, and you should check the academic standing of the degree separately, including whether employers and graduate schools you care about recognise it.
Where do I check whether a school is certified?
Use the School Search tool on the official Study in the States website, run by the Department of Homeland Security. Search the school name and read the card. Do not rely on a list sent to you by a recruiter, a PDF of unknown date or a screenshot without a link.
The school is certified but my I-20 shows a different campus. Is that a problem?
It can be. Multi-campus schools appear as one card with the campuses listed under it. Make sure the campus and programme on your I-20 match what the school told you, and ask the designated school official in writing if anything differs. A wrong campus can affect where you are allowed to study.
What if my school loses certification after I arrive?
SEVP sends a letter to the US address your school has on file, and you must act before the SEVIS termination date for that school. That usually means transferring to another certified school, changing status or leaving the United States. Contact your designated school official straight away and follow the instructions in any SEVP letter.
My agent says I can pay the school first and sort the visa later. Is that safe?
Only if you have checked the school, read the refund policy and kept receipts. Never let anyone hold your original Form I-20. ICE tells students that recruiters should not hold the I-20 and that you do not need a recruiter to get a student visa or transfer schools.
How long before the start date can I travel?
The State Department says a student visa can be issued well in advance, but you cannot enter the United States on it more than 30 days before the programme start date. Plan flights around the date on the I-20, not around when your visa is ready.
Do community colleges and language schools need certification too?
Yes, any school that wants to enroll F-1 or M-1 students must be certified, whether it is a university, a community college, a language training centre or a vocational school. The search tool lets you filter by education type. Check each one separately even if it shares a name with a better known institution.
Does being at a certified school mean my visa will be approved?
No. Certification only lets the school issue an I-20. The consular officer still decides on your funds, academic history, ties and plans. Border and Bridges treats the school check as one step in a file, not as a promise of how the interview will go.
What should I do before paying tuition or the SEVIS fee?
Check the school on the official search, read your I-20 for matching names and dates, ask for the refund policy in writing and pay only to the school account named on its own website. Then pay the I-901 SEVIS fee with the SEVIS ID printed on your I-20 and keep the receipt.
