How does a Pakistani student apply for a Czech study visa?
The route has five steps, and the first one is not the paperwork. First you hold an admission letter from a Czech institution. Second, you register for an appointment with the Czech Embassy in Islamabad through its monthly draw. Third, if the draw gives you a date, you attend in person with your originals and copies. Fourth, the embassy passes the file to the Ministry of the Interior in Prague, which decides. Fifth, you collect the visa, travel, and finish registration in the Czech Republic.
The legal basis is simple. Proof of the purpose of study is an admission letter for a programme under section 64 of Act No. 326/1999, as the Islamabad study page, the embassy visa page and the Ministry of the Interior page all state. Everything else in the file proves that you can pay for the stay, have somewhere to live, are insured and have a clean record.
Older guides tell students to book the appointment the moment they have an admission decision. That advice does not fit what the embassy publishes now. Appointments are not booked at will; they are assigned by random selection after a short registration window once a month. This changes how you plan your intake. Our guides on studying in the Czech Republic from Pakistan and the cost of studying in the Czech Republic cover universities and budgets; this one is about the visa step only.
Tip: Treat the draw as part of your admission timeline, not as an afterthought. A student who is not selected in one month has to wait for the next registration day, and the delay sits on top of the decision time.
Which office handles Pakistani applicants?
For a Pakistani citizen the office is the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad. You must apply in person: the Islamabad embassy visa page says the long-term visa application must be submitted in person, the Ministry of the Interior page says abroad you submit in person at a mission after booking an appointment, and the government services portal says you can only apply in person. The Islamabad visa page also says you may apply only at the embassy of your citizenship, of the country that issued your travel document, or of the country where you have held a long-term or permanent residence permit for two years.
The embassy collects the application and may conduct an interview that the Ministry requests, but The Ministry of the Interior makes the decision, not the embassy: the Islamabad embassy visa page, the Ministry of the Interior study page and the embassy study page all say the Ministry decides. That matters for how you read advice from agents. Nobody at the embassy counter promises an outcome, and nobody outside the Ministry can speed a decision.
Beware of appointment sellers
The Islamabad appointments page states that the embassy does not cooperate with any third party appointment sellers and that appointments are free, and the appointments overview repeats this. If someone offers you a slot for money, they are selling something the embassy gives away free.
Is it a visa or a residence permit?
You will see both words, and the pages are not perfectly aligned. The Ministry of the Interior describes a long-term visa for study purposes and a separate long-term residence permit for study. The Ministry of the Interior visa page says a long-term study visa is valid for a maximum of 1 year, and the residence permit page says a permit can be valid for as long as 1 year and, in cases laid down in law, 2 years.
The Islamabad embassy publishes a study page headed with the residence permit wording and a separate long-term visa page, and both set out the same documents. Its appointment page covers "long-term visa and residence for study purposes" together. In practice, tell the embassy your course length when you register, and ask your university's international office which category it expects. Do not guess, because the application form and fee depend on it.
For most Pakistani students on a master's or bachelor's programme, what matters is the sequence: a long-term visa to enter, then registration and biometrics in the Czech Republic after arrival. Plan for both stages.
How does the monthly appointment draw work?
As of 27 October 2026, the Islamabad embassy appointments page for long-term study visas, updated on 1 October 2026, says registration is by email on the last working day of each month between 12:00 and 18:00 Pakistan time, that places are given by random selection, and that the listed dates are 30 October, 30 November and 31 December 2026; the embassy appointments overview confirms the last-working-day rule.
The rules around the email are strict. According to the embassy, you send one email per applicant, put only your passport number in the subject line, and write in the body your full name as in the travel document, the visa type, the purpose of stay, your estimated arrival and departure dates, and a phone number. You attach PDF scans of the passport data page and the letter of acceptance for study, with the total under 10 MB. Emails with attachments over 10 MB, or sent to the wrong address, are ignored without a reply.
What happens if you win a place
The embassy assigns a date and asks you to bring copies of all original documents and application forms. The assigned date cannot be changed, and if you fail to attend it becomes invalid. Arriving late without prior apology also cancels the appointment.
What happens if you are not selected
You register again on the next registration day. Nothing in the pages we read suggests that earlier registrations carry over, so assume each month is a fresh draw. That is why a student with a September start should begin registering in the spring, not in July.
Not sure how to word the registration email or which documents to scan first? Send us your admission letter and we will check your plan against the embassy's current rules. Message us on WhatsApp at +92 321 4656927 or call +92 321 4656927.
What documents does the Islamabad embassy ask for?
The embassy asks for originals plus one set of copies of everything, and for the passport. These are the items on its study page and long-term visa page.
- The application form, signed by you.
- A valid passport with at least two blank pages, valid for at least three months after you return to Pakistan.
- Two colour photographs, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, on a white background.
- The purpose of study, shown normally by the admission letter.
- Accommodation for the entire stay, shown by either a confirmation from a person or legal entity with an officially verified signature, or an original or certified copy of a rental or accommodation contract.
- Proof of funds, covered in its own section below.
- Criminal record extracts, covered below.
- Parental consent if you are under 18.
- A health-related document if the embassy asks for it under the Ministry of Health's measures.
Documents generally cannot be older than 180 days from the day of issue, with exceptions such as the passport and birth or marriage certificates, according to the Islamabad embassy study page, and the embassy long-term visa page and the Sydney consulate repeat the 180-day limit. Documents in English or Urdu must be officially translated into Czech. For the Pakistani side of the paperwork, our guide on apostille and attestation of Pakistani documents sets out the order of offices, and you should confirm with the embassy which documents of yours it expects to be attested or legalised, because the study page does not describe legalisation for this application.
How much money must you show?
As of 27 October 2026, the Ministry of the Interior page on proof of funds requires 15 times the subsistence minimum plus twice the minimum for every full month after the first, at CZK 3,130 a month, with half the amount for applicants under 18, and the Czech mission financial means page and the Sydney consulate page give the same formula and the same CZK 3,130. The Islamabad pages we checked name no amount of their own and ask only for a bank statement, so the Ministry formula is the working figure. The Ministry's own page says that the 3,130 amount has applied since 1 January 2023, and we could not confirm a newer figure, so ask the embassy at your appointment whether a different amount applies.
The amounts for common stay lengths
| Expected stay | Working | Funds required (CZK) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 46,950 + 5 x 6,260 | 78,250 |
| 10 months | 46,950 + 9 x 6,260 | 103,290 |
| 12 months | 46,950 + 11 x 6,260 | 115,810 |
| 12 months, applicant under 18 | half of 115,810 | 57,905 |
The six-month and twelve-month rows match the Ministry's own examples, and the other two rows are our arithmetic from the same formula. Convert at the day's exchange rate when you plan, and do not rely on an old euro figure in a blog, including ours.
How to show it
The Islamabad study page asks for a stamped and signed bank statement for the last six months and says an international debit card or scholarship can be added, and the embassy visa page lists the same proof of funds. The Ministry pages add that the authority may ask for a valid international payment card linked to the account. The Ministry of the Interior proof of funds page and the Czech mission financial means page both accept, for students, a stipend or grant or a written commitment from a public authority or legal entity to cover costs, with your own funds shown for any difference.
Keep the money in an account in your name, with a history the officer can follow. A balance that appears the week before the appointment invites questions about its source, and the explanation should be ready in writing. Our guide on police character certificates for student visas covers the clean-record side of the file.
What does the application cost?
As of 27 October 2026, the Ministry of the Interior page on the long-term study visa sets a consular fee of CZK 2,500 when you apply abroad, the Czech government services portal gives CZK 2,500 payable in EUR, USD or local currency, and the Czech Consulate General in Sydney states the same CZK 2,500.
That is the government fee only. Other costs sit around it: official Czech translations of your documents, a criminal record extract from Pakistan and from any other country where you lived, passport photographs, courier or travel to Islamabad for the appointment, and travel medical insurance. We have not verified prices for those items, so quote them from the provider, not from a forum.
| Cost item | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Consular fee | CZK 2,500 when applying abroad |
| Payment currency | EUR, USD or local currency, according to the government services portal |
| Translations | Required into Czech for English and Urdu documents; price not published |
| Insurance | Required; see the next section |
| Appointment | Free through the embassy's registration system |
Ask the embassy how it takes payment on the day. The study page links to a separate fee page and does not state the amount or the method itself.
What insurance do you need?
Travel medical insurance for the first 90 days is needed before the visa is issued: the Ministry of the Interior page and the residence permit page describe emergency and essential care for the first 90 days, and the Islamabad study page asks for travel medical insurance after a positive decision. Comprehensive health insurance is required for the rest of your stay, and the Ministry of the Interior says that for the first 90 days a travel policy covers emergency and essential care.
The Sydney consulate page says the insured limit for one accident must be at least EUR 400,000 with no participation by the insured person, but the Islamabad pages we checked do not repeat this figure, so ask the embassy before you buy a policy.
Buy the policy after the positive decision, as the Islamabad study page says, and make sure the dates match the visa period. A policy with the wrong dates can hold up the visa. Our overview of health insurance for students abroad explains the difference between travel cover and full cover.
How do you handle the criminal record extract and translations?
Applicants must supply a criminal record extract: the Islamabad study page asks for the Pakistani extract with an official Czech translation, the embassy visa page says the same, and the Sydney consulate page lists a police clearance certificate for applicants over 15. If you also lived in another country for more than six months in the last three years, the embassy asks for an extract from that country too, or an affidavit in English and Czech when the country issues no such document.
The embassy's study page names an authorised translator for Pakistan on its own page, so use a translator the embassy recognises and do not hire one chosen only by an agent. Check the name and contact details on the page itself, because they can change. Order the extract close to your appointment, because it counts against the 180-day limit from the day it was issued.
Tip: Make a dated checklist with the issue date of every document and the date it expires under the 180-day rule. If you are selected in the draw, you may have only a few weeks to appear, and a stale document can cost you the slot.
How long does a decision take?
The Sydney consulate page says a long-term visa application is processed within 60 days of receiving the complete file, and the residence permit page gives 60 days for extensions, but the Islamabad pages we checked state no number of days, so treat 60 days as a reference and not a promise. The decision itself comes from Prague. The Ministry of the Interior makes the decision, not the embassy: the Islamabad embassy visa page, the Ministry of the Interior study page and the embassy study page all say the Ministry decides.
The Ministry page also notes that longer processing can be explained in its FAQ. Add the wait for the draw, the gap between selection and your appointment, and any request for extra documents, and the whole process takes months. Our other guides give a three-month budget from appointment to decision; we have not been able to confirm that from an official page, so use it only as a planning cushion.
What happens after the visa is issued?
You enter the Czech Republic on the visa and complete the next stage there. After arrival the Ministry of the Interior residence permit page describes registration and biometrics, with a time limit for collection of 60 days from the date your biometric data was scanned, and the long-term visa page says the same registration and biometrics follow arrival. Your university's international office usually helps with the paperwork at the foreign police.
The visa and the permit are time limited. The Ministry says a long-term visa is valid for up to one year. If your programme is longer, plan the extension before expiry, and keep your enrolment confirmation current, because the studies are the reason for the stay.
If the visa is refused, read the decision for its stated grounds before you plan anything. Our guide on what to do after a student visa refusal explains the choices.
Which mistakes cost Pakistani students a month?
Each missed draw costs a month, and some mistakes cost more. These are the ones we would check first.
- Emailing outside the window. The registration runs on one working day, for six hours, Pakistan time.
- Attaching too much. Attachments over 10 MB are ignored, and you get no reply.
- Several applicants in one email. The embassy asks for one applicant per email.
- Stale documents. A document older than 180 days from the day of issue is a problem unless an exception applies.
- Translations done by anyone. The embassy expects official Czech translations of documents in English or Urdu.
- Funds below the formula. Work out the amount for your exact stay length before you move money.
- Missing the assigned date. It cannot be changed, and it lapses if you do not appear.
- Paying a seller for a slot. Appointments are free, and the embassy works with no third-party sellers.
A student who prepares the file during the weeks of waiting for the draw usually walks in calm. A student who starts translating only after being selected has a few weeks to do it, and that is when errors happen.
What does a realistic timeline look like with dates?
This is an illustrative example, not a real client file. A Pakistani student has an offer for a master's starting in September 2027. The registration days below follow the embassy's rule of the last working day of each month, so confirm each date on the embassy page before you act.
- Early 2027: collect the admission letter and the university's confirmation. Start the criminal record extract only when you are close to your registration day, because of the 180-day limit.
- 30 April 2027, a Friday: first registration day for a student who is ready. Send the email between 12:00 and 18:00 Pakistan time with the two PDFs.
- 31 May 2027, a Monday: second chance if the April draw did not select the student.
- 30 June 2027, a Wednesday: third chance, and the last comfortable one for a September start.
- After selection: the embassy assigns a date. The student attends in person with the originals and copies, including the six-month bank statement and the accommodation proof.
- Following weeks: the Ministry in Prague decides. After a positive decision the student buys travel medical insurance for the first 90 days and collects the visa.
- September 2027: travel, register, give biometrics, and start the programme.
The plan only works if the student is selected in the first or second draw. A student not selected until June has almost no margin, which is why we tell families to treat the Czech route as a plan that needs an early start and a back-up option.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Pakistani students apply for a Czech study visa?
In person at the Czech Embassy in Islamabad. The embassy collects the application, and the Ministry of the Interior in Prague decides it. You cannot apply by post or through an agent's counter.
How do I get an appointment at the Czech Embassy in Islamabad?
You email the embassy on the last working day of the month between 12:00 and 18:00 Pakistan time, with your passport number as the subject and two PDF attachments under 10 MB. The embassy assigns appointments by random selection, and registration is automatic.
When is the next registration date?
The embassy page listed 30 October, 30 November and 31 December 2026 as of 27 October 2026. Check the page on the day, because the embassy can change its notices.
How much is the Czech long-term visa fee?
As of 27 October 2026, the consular fee when applying abroad is CZK 2,500 according to the Ministry of the Interior, the government services portal and the Czech Consulate General in Sydney. The portal says it can be paid in EUR, USD or local currency.
How much money must I show for a Czech student visa?
The formula is 15 times the subsistence minimum plus twice the minimum for every full month after the first, at CZK 3,130 a month. That is CZK 78,250 for six months and CZK 115,810 for twelve months, and half those amounts for applicants under 18. Confirm the figure with the embassy.
Do I need a criminal record certificate?
Yes. The Islamabad embassy asks for the Pakistani criminal record extract with an official Czech translation, and for an extract or affidavit from any other country where you stayed more than six months in the last three years.
How old can my documents be?
Generally not older than 180 days from the day of issue, with exceptions such as the passport and birth or marriage certificates. Documents in English or Urdu need an official Czech translation.
What insurance does the visa need?
Travel medical insurance covering emergency and essential care for the first 90 days, arranged after a positive decision, and comprehensive insurance for the rest of your stay. Ask the embassy for the minimum insured limit before you buy.
How long does the Czech student visa take?
The Islamabad pages state no number of days. Other Czech missions refer to 60 days from receipt of the complete application, and the Ministry may extend that period. Add the wait for the draw and the appointment.
Can I pay someone to get me an appointment?
No. The embassy says appointments are free and that it does not cooperate with any third-party appointment sellers. Anyone selling a slot is selling something the embassy gives away.
Is it a visa or a residence permit?
Both appear on the official pages. The embassy publishes a long-term visa page and a residence permit for study page with similar documents. Tell the embassy your course length and ask your university which category applies.
Can Border and Bridges promise me a Czech visa?
No. Only the Ministry of the Interior decides. We can check your admission letter, documents and funds against the current official pages, prepare you for the draw and tell you plainly where the risks are.
