Can Pakistani Students Switch From a Visitor Visa to a Student Visa in the UK? (2026)

No. A Pakistani student on a UK Standard Visitor visa cannot switch to a Student visa from inside the UK. The Visitor route is one of the visas the rules bar from switching, so you have to leave, return to Pakistan, and apply for the Student visa from there before your course starts. This catches people every year. They arrive on a visit, get an offer from a university, and assume they can simply upgrade without flying home. The rules do not allow it, and trying anyway wastes money and time you do not have.

Why Pakistani students cannot switch from a UK Visitor visa to a Student visa in 2026

Can you switch from a Visitor visa to a Student visa inside the UK?

No, and this is not a grey area. The Home Office publishes a list of visas you cannot switch to a Student visa from, and the Visit visa sits on that list. Being physically in the UK on a visit, holding a real offer and a CAS, changes nothing. The application has to be made from outside the country.

The visas you cannot switch to a Student visa from include the Visit visa, the Short-term student visa, the Parent of a Child Student visa, the Seasonal Worker and Domestic Worker routes, and any stay that is outside the Immigration Rules. If your last permission was any of those, an in-country switch is refused. A Pakistani passport holder on a Standard Visitor visa is squarely in the first category.

So the honest answer to the question everyone asks is short. You go home first. Everything below explains why, what the alternative is, and how to do it cleanly so you do not lose an intake.

Why does the UK not allow this switch?

The Visitor route is built on a promise. When you apply for a Standard Visitor visa you tell the Home Office you are coming for a short, temporary purpose and that you will leave at the end. Study on a degree course is not a visitor purpose. Letting visitors convert into students inside the country would undercut that whole design, so the rules close the door.

There is a second reason, and it is practical. The Student route has its own checks that are meant to happen before you travel, not after. Your finances, your English, your genuine intention to study, and your sponsor's licence are all assessed as part of a Student visa application. The system is built for that assessment to sit at the border, which is why the certificate and the funds and the rest belong to an application made from Pakistan.

Tip. A university offer is not permission to stay. Some students see the CAS as a golden ticket and think the visa is a formality they can sort out later from within the UK. It is a separate legal step with its own place in the queue, and on the Visitor route that place is back in Pakistan.

What do you do instead?

You apply for the Student visa from Pakistan, the same way you would have if you had never visited. The visit does not help you and it does not hurt you, as long as you did not breach its conditions. You return home, complete the Student visa application in full, and travel back once it is granted.

The sequence is worth stating plainly, because students tie themselves in knots over it. Get the unconditional offer and the CAS from your university. Arrange your maintenance funds and hold them for the required period. Book and sit your TB test. Then apply online for the Student visa, pay the fee and the healthcare surcharge, give your biometrics, and wait for the decision. Our step by step guide to the UK Student visa from Pakistan walks through every stage, and our note on what a CAS letter is and how to get one covers the document the whole application hangs on.

None of this requires you to stay in the UK while it happens. In fact you cannot, because the application is made from your home country.

Can you study a short course on a Visitor visa at all?

Yes, within limits, and this is where the confusion often starts. A Standard Visitor can study a course of up to six months at an accredited provider. That is a genuine allowance, and it is why some short language courses or executive programmes are done on a visit. What it is not is a route onto a degree.

The moment your study is longer than six months, or your course needs a licensed student sponsor, the Visitor route stops working and you need a Student visa. You also get no right to work on a visit, and no path to bring the study to a longer stay without leaving. So a short accredited course is fine on a visit. A one year masters is not, and no amount of being already in the country converts one into the other.

  • Course of six months or less at an accredited provider: a Standard Visitor can do it.
  • Degree course, or any course needing a student sponsor: you need a Student visa applied for from Pakistan.
  • Any study with work alongside it: not possible on a Visitor visa.

Who can switch to a Student visa from inside the UK?

Switching in-country is allowed, just not from a visit. If your current permission is an eligible one, for example another Student visa, a Graduate visa in some cases, or certain work and family routes, you may be able to apply to switch to a new Student visa without leaving. The test is your last grant of permission, and whether it appears on the barred list.

For a Pakistani student the common eligible case is someone already studying in the UK who wins a place on a new, higher course and switches from one Student visa to another. That is a world away from a visitor. If you are unsure which category your current visa falls into, check it against the official list on the GOV.UK guidance on switching to a Student visa before you assume anything, because getting this wrong means a refused application and a lost fee.

If you can switch, what are the timing rules?

For those who are eligible to switch inside the UK, the timing is tight and unforgiving. You must apply before your current visa expires. You can apply at the earliest three months before your course start date. And you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man while the application is pending, because leaving withdraws it.

Miss the expiry date and you are an overstayer, which is far more serious than a late application. Travel while you wait and your application dies on the runway. These are the same rules that apply when a current student moves up to a new course, so they are worth knowing even though they do not rescue a visitor.

How do you apply for the Student visa from Pakistan?

Exactly as any first-time applicant does. The process does not get shorter because you have already seen the UK. You need the unconditional offer and the CAS, the right money held for the right length of time, a valid TB certificate, and a clean, complete online application.

Two documents cause most of the delay, so start them early. The first is proof of funds, and the amount is set by where you will study and how long for. Our guide to how much bank statement is needed for a UK Student visa from Pakistan sets out the maintenance rules. The second is the TB test, which every Pakistani applicant needs from an approved clinic, covered in our note on the TB test requirement. Get both moving the week your CAS arrives.

One more point on timing, because it decides whether the plan works. The visa decision sits at the end of a chain, and each link takes days. The university has to issue the CAS. Your funds have to sit in the account for the full qualifying period before you apply. The clinic has to return your TB result. Only then can you submit, and only after that does the processing clock start. Build the chain backwards from your course start date, leave a buffer at every link, and you will not be caught short. Rush it, and a single slow step can push you past the intake.

What does the Student visa cost from Pakistan?

There are two separate charges at the application stage, plus the healthcare surcharge, and students mix them up. The visa application fee is one line. The Immigration Health Surcharge is another, and it is usually the larger of the two.

As of 17 August 2026, the GOV.UK healthcare payment page sets the student surcharge at 776 pounds for each year of your visa, paid upfront inside the application. Because a Student visa runs longer than the course itself, a one year masters usually attracts more than a single year of it. We break the whole surcharge down in our guide to whether Pakistani students pay the UK Immigration Health Surcharge, and the wider bill, including the visa fee, is set out in what a UK Student visa costs from Pakistan.

What goes wrong most often?

After years of running UK files out of Johar Town, the same errors around visits and switches come up again and again.

Assuming the offer lets you stay

A CAS is a university document. It is not permission from the Home Office to remain in the UK. Students arrive on a visit, collect an offer, and only then discover they must fly home to apply.

Overstaying while trying to switch

Some try to submit a Student application from inside the UK on a visit, have it refused, and by then their visit permission has run out. An overstay is far more damaging to future applications than simply going home on time.

Booking the course start too tight

If you leave the trip home and the fresh application to the last minute, you run out of runway before the course begins. Give yourself weeks, not days.

Confusing a short course with a degree

A six month accredited course on a visit is fine. Treating that allowance as a way onto a one year masters is not, and the university registry will stop you.

A realistic example with dates

Take Bilal, a Karachi graduate who flies to London in June 2026 on a six month Standard Visitor visa to see family. While there he receives an offer for a one year MSc starting on 21 September 2026. Here is the clean way through.

  • Late June 2026. Offer arrives. Bilal accepts that he cannot switch in-country and plans his return to Pakistan.
  • July 2026. He asks the university for the CAS, arranges his maintenance funds, and books his TB test for when he is back home.
  • Early August 2026. He flies back to Karachi, sits the TB test, and receives the CAS.
  • Mid August 2026. He applies online for the Student visa from Pakistan, pays the fee and the healthcare surcharge, and gives biometrics.
  • Early September 2026. The visa is granted. He travels back to London with permission that actually allows him to study.

Now the version we see too often. A student stays in the UK on the visit, files a Student application from inside the country, is refused because the visit cannot switch, and by the time the refusal lands the course has started and the visit has almost expired. Same offer, same student, a lost year. The difference was one decision about where to apply from.

  • In-country switching exists, but only from eligible visas such as another Student visa, never from a visit.
  • If you are eligible to switch, apply before your current visa expires and do not travel while it is pending.
  • Applying from Pakistan means the usual CAS, funds, TB test, visa fee and healthcare surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

I am in the UK on a visit and have a university offer. Can I just switch?

No. The Visit visa is one of the routes you cannot switch to a Student visa from. Your offer and CAS do not change this. You have to return to Pakistan and apply for the Student visa from there before your course starts. Being physically in the UK does not give you a shortcut.

Why can other people switch to a Student visa but I cannot?

Because switching depends on your current visa. People already on eligible routes, such as another Student visa, can apply to switch inside the UK. The Visit visa is deliberately excluded, since a visit is a short temporary purpose and study on a degree is not. Your last grant of permission decides it.

Can I study anything at all on my Visitor visa?

Yes, but only a short course. A Standard Visitor can study for up to six months at an accredited provider. That covers some language and short professional courses. It does not cover a degree or any course that needs a licensed student sponsor, and it gives you no right to work.

What happens if I apply for a Student visa from inside the UK on a visit anyway?

The application is refused because a visit cannot switch to the Student route, and you lose the fee. Worse, if your visit permission expires while you wait, you become an overstayer, which damages future applications far more than simply going home on time would have.

Does having visited the UK help my Student visa application?

Not really. A clean travel history with no breaches is a small positive, but the visit itself gives you no advantage and no shortcut. Your Student visa is judged on your offer, your funds, your English and your intention to study, assessed on an application made from Pakistan.

How long does it take to fly home and get the Student visa?

Plan for several weeks once you are back, because the visa decision has its own processing time on top of arranging your CAS, funds and TB test. Do not leave it to the last week before your course, or you risk missing the intake even though nothing went wrong with the application.

Do I still pay the healthcare surcharge if I apply from Pakistan?

Yes. The Immigration Health Surcharge applies to the Student visa wherever you apply from. As of 2026 the student rate is 776 pounds for each year of your visa, paid upfront. Because your visa is longer than your course, a one year masters usually costs more than a single year of it.

Can I keep my UK accommodation while I go back to apply?

That is a personal arrangement, not an immigration question. Nothing stops you keeping a tenancy, but do not rely on being able to return until the Student visa is actually granted. Book flexible travel and avoid committing to dates that assume a decision you do not yet have.

My visit visa expires soon and my course starts later. What do I do?

Leave the UK before your visit expires, return to Pakistan, and apply for the Student visa from there. Do not overstay in the hope of switching. An overstay is a serious mark against you, while a timely departure and a fresh application from home is clean and normal.

Is a Short-term student visa the same as a Student visa?

No. The Short-term student route is for English language courses of a set length and is also on the list you cannot switch to a full Student visa from. For a degree you need the main Student visa, applied for from Pakistan, with a CAS from a licensed sponsor.

Can Border and Bridges help me plan the trip home and the application?

Yes. We help students already in the UK on a visit sequence the return to Pakistan, the CAS, the funds and the TB test so the Student visa is ready before the course starts. We have guided applicants from Lahore and across Pakistan through UK applications since 2016.

Will applying from Pakistan after a visit look suspicious?

No, it is the correct and expected route. Applying for a Student visa from your home country after a genuine visit is exactly what the rules require. What looks wrong is overstaying or trying to switch from a visit, not doing it the proper way.
