Germany Student Visa Application From Pakistan: Consular Services Portal, Documents and Appointment (2026)

A Pakistani student applies for the German national student visa online through the Foreign Office Consular Services Portal, uploads the required documents for screening, receives an appointment only once the file is complete, and pays a EUR 75 fee in PKR in cash at the counter. The rules on funds, documents and timing are stricter than most family chat groups suggest, and some older embassy leaflets still circulate with outdated amounts. This guide shows the process in order, what we confirmed on official pages today, and where sources disagree.

How does a Pakistani student apply for a German student visa in 2026?

The Islamabad student visa page, dated 27.11.2025, says the Consular Service Portal provides a full digital solution to the application process, and the Karachi Consulate General page says student visa applications are submitted online through the same Consular Services Portal. The portal asks questions about your purpose of stay and then generates the list of documents you need. You scan and upload them. A visa officer screens the upload first. The outcome is either an appointment notification or a request for further or corrected documents.

That is a shift from the paper-and-envelope routine described in older checklists, which asked applicants to leave a sealed set at the consulate gate. If a document you are following mentions envelopes, two copies and gate drop-off, it is probably old. Always use the version the portal gives you on the day.

The national visa for study is the "D" visa, issued under section 16b of the Residence Act. It lets you enter Germany to study. After arrival you convert it into a residence permit at the local foreigners office, which we cover in our guide on Anmeldung and the residence permit.

Which German mission handles your application?

The Islamabad page says the embassy handles applicants from Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, while the Karachi page lists Sindh and Balochistan as its district. For a student from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad or Multan, that means the embassy in Islamabad. For Karachi, Hyderabad or Quetta, the Consulate General in Karachi handles it.

You choose the correct location inside the portal. Choosing the wrong one costs time because the file will be redirected or halted. Check your province against the district list on the mission pages before you start.

What must you have in place before you open the portal?

The portal will not wait for you to collect documents. A halted registration means a delayed file. The Islamabad page says past degree certificates, transcripts and proof of tuition payment where applicable must be submitted from the outset, and that without them the online registration will remain halted; it also warns that incomplete applications result in delayed processing.

  • Admission letter. Unconditional or conditional, as your portal questionnaire requires. If your university has not yet confirmed your place, the Islamabad page suggests proof of late-arrival acceptance or an enrolment letter for the next semester.
  • Academic documents. School and previous degree certificates and transcripts, in order, readable on A4.
  • Language evidence. German certificates for German-taught courses, or a university letter confirming English instruction plus an English test result for English-taught courses. See our guide on German language requirements for detail.
  • Financial proof. Normally a blocked account confirmation, a scholarship letter or a formal obligation letter, explained below.
  • Health insurance. The April 2026 leaflet says you need adequate health insurance, and an additional incoming insurance if your student health insurance does not start on your date of travel, and the Islamabad leaflet asks for travel health insurance valid from the intended date of travel.
  • APS certificate, if your route requires it. Our guide to the APS certificate shows how that works.
  • Passport, photographs and your CV and motivation letter, as the checklist for your category lists them.

How much money must you show, and why do documents disagree?

As of 26 October 2026, the April 2026 Foreign Office student visa leaflet sets the minimum financial proof at EUR 992 per month, or EUR 11,904 per year, which matches the Cairo mission's leaflet and the Muscat mission's blocked account page. This is the figure used for a student who needs to show financial resources for a full year. A blocked account (Sperrkonto) at a German provider is the usual way to prove it, and the Muscat mission page describes the monthly withdrawal limit as EUR 992.

Two older Pakistan mission documents show different figures: the Islamabad study visa leaflet, dated 10/2023, says EUR 11,208 for one year, and the mission's undated document checklist says a blocked account confirmation of EUR 10,236. Families copy figures from whichever document they find, and the result is a bank transfer that is too small. Use the current Foreign Office figure, then confirm the amount the portal asks you to show on the day you register. If the portal and a leaflet disagree, the portal governs your case.

Ways to prove funds

MethodWhat it isWatch out for
Blocked accountMoney deposited with a German provider and released monthlyOnly the official opening confirmation is accepted, with total and monthly amounts shown
ScholarshipAward letter covering living costsIt must cover the amount required for the period
Obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung)A resident in Germany formally takes on your costs at the foreigners officeArranging it takes time and the sponsor must qualify
Own or family funds shown otherwiseAccepted only in forms the mission listsDo not assume a plain bank statement is enough

Our guides on opening a blocked account and on what balance you need cover the money side in detail. If your course charges tuition, the checklist also asks for proof of funds to pay it.

Practical tip: Open the blocked account only after your admission is confirmed and your documents are ready, then upload the official confirmation exactly as issued. Do not retype or crop the amounts.

What does the visa cost, and how do you pay?

As of 26 October 2026, the German Embassy Islamabad visa page lists the long-term (category D) visa fee as EUR 75.00, due in PKR at the current exchange rate and payable in cash at the counter, and the April 2026 student visa leaflet of another German mission gives the same EUR 75 fee.

The fee is paid at the mission, not into a personal account and not to an agent. Pakistani families sometimes hear "send the fee with your envelope." Older checklists even say not to enclose a fee with the paper set. Follow the portal, pay at the counter when asked, and keep the receipt.

Budget for the extras too: translations where required, attestation or verification of documents where your route asks for it, courier costs for documents if you need them, the blocked account provider's opening and monthly fees, and health insurance. None of these are the visa fee, and none of them are paid to the embassy.

What are the steps from portal registration to visa in your passport?

  1. Confirm your admission and read the university's own instructions about the enrolment deadline.
  2. Prepare the document set and scan each page clearly, in order.
  3. Register on the Consular Services Portal, choose Pakistan and the correct mission, and answer the questionnaire.
  4. Upload documents. Missing degree certificates or transcripts halt the registration.
  5. Wait for screening. The officer either sends an appointment notification or asks for corrected or additional documents.
  6. Attend the appointment with your passport, originals and the printed confirmation. Pay the fee at the counter when told.
  7. Interview and biometrics. Be ready to explain your course, your funding and your plan.
  8. Wait for the decision. The Islamabad visa page says all national visa processing times highly vary, while the April 2026 leaflet gives a standard processing time of 2 weeks, in individual cases even longer.
  9. Collect your passport, check the visa's dates and type, buy your ticket only after that, and arrange insurance to start on your date of travel.

Our guide to how long a Germany student visa takes gives a more detailed planning range, with the caveat that no figure binds the embassy.

What happens at the appointment and interview?

Expect a short, direct conversation. The officer wants to see that your plan hangs together: a real course, a real source of money, a credible reason for choosing Germany and a sensible plan afterwards. Bring the originals of everything you uploaded. Answer in your own words. Prepared speeches usually sound worse than honest, slightly imperfect answers.

Questions Pakistani applicants commonly face

  • Why this course, and why this German university rather than one in Pakistan?
  • Who is paying, and how was the money accumulated?
  • If your degree is in a different field, how does the new course connect?
  • Do you have a gap in studies or work, and what filled it?
  • What do you plan to do after the degree?

Make sure your answers match your motivation letter and CV. A mismatch between what you wrote and what you say is a classic reason for doubt.

What if the visa is refused?

Starting on 1 July 2025, the Islamabad visa page says the remonstration procedure for visa rejections is cancelled indefinitely. That changes the advice many families have heard from older cases. In practice you should read the refusal letter closely, identify the exact reason, and decide whether to reapply with a corrected file or take legal advice on other remedies. Check the Islamabad page for the current position, because this kind of procedural rule can change.

The common reasons we see for doubt in German student files are an unclear funding source, a mismatch between the previous degree and the chosen course, a language certificate that does not fit the course language, and incomplete uploads. Fix the cause before you apply again. A second application that repeats the first usually meets the same outcome.

Which mistakes do Pakistani applicants make most often?

  • Following an old leaflet. Amounts and procedures in older documents differ from current ones.
  • Registering before the file is complete. A halted registration costs more time than a few extra days of preparation.
  • Booking flights before the visa. Do not buy a ticket on hope.
  • Paying a fixer or a "slot seller." Appointments are issued by the mission after screening, not sold by third parties.
  • Uploading blurry or cropped scans. The officer cannot approve what cannot be read.
  • Sending a bank statement where the blocked account confirmation is required.
  • Insurance that starts after your travel date. The leaflets ask for cover from the date you travel.

What should you do once the visa is in your passport?

Check the details first: your name, the visa type, the validity dates and any condition printed on it. A mistake is far easier to correct at the mission before you leave than at a German airport. Then work through a short list.

  • Insurance. Confirm that your cover starts on your date of travel. Our guide to public and private health insurance for students explains the choice you will make before enrolment.
  • Accommodation. Secure at least a temporary address, because registration of your address is one of your first tasks after arrival.
  • Documents in hand luggage. Carry the originals of your admission letter, blocked account papers, insurance confirmation and academic documents, not in checked baggage.
  • Arrival tasks. Plan for address registration, the residence permit appointment and enrolment, in the order your university describes.

The national visa is an entry permission for study. Your right to stay is confirmed later by the local foreigners office, so keep every document you used for the application until that step is complete.

Do documents need translation, and who should prepare them?

The portal questionnaire decides what you must provide, so follow it over any generic list. As a general habit, keep a clean scan and a clean original of every document, and make sure names, dates of birth and spellings match across your passport, degrees, admission letter and bank documents. A single letter different in a name can trigger a question that costs weeks.

If a document must be translated or verified, use the provider the instructions name, and ask for the final certified copy early. Ordering transcripts from a Pakistani university can take longer than families expect, especially around result season. Start that request on the day you receive your admission letter, not on the day you register on the portal.

What does a realistic timeline look like with dates?

Take a hypothetical student, Sara from Bahria Town, Lahore, planning a winter semester start in October 2027. This is an illustration, not a forecast.

  1. March to May 2027: She applies to universities, using the route each one requires, and receives an admission letter in May.
  2. Late May: She orders her degree transcripts and checks which of her documents need verification for her route.
  3. June: She opens her blocked account with the amount shown on the current Foreign Office leaflet and receives the official confirmation.
  4. Late June: She registers on the portal, uploads her complete file.
  5. July: The officer screens the file. If a document is unclear, she replaces it within days.
  6. Appointment, then decision: She attends, pays the fee at the counter and waits. Because processing times vary, she leaves at least a few weeks of margin before the university's enrolment deadline.
  7. Before travel: She checks the visa dates, books flights and confirms her insurance start date.

The pattern is simple. Prepare early, register only when ready, and leave margin. Students who start the portal a few weeks before the semester gamble with a process the embassy does not control.

Key takeaways

  • The German national student visa application starts on the Foreign Office Consular Services Portal, not with an envelope at the consulate gate.
  • Islamabad handles Punjab, Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir; Karachi handles Sindh and Balochistan.
  • As of 26 October 2026 the fee is EUR 75, paid in PKR in cash at the counter, and the financial proof figure is EUR 992 a month or EUR 11,904 a year.
  • Older Pakistan mission documents show EUR 11,208 and EUR 10,236, so use the current figure and confirm it on the portal.
  • Missing degree certificates or transcripts halt your online registration and delay processing.
  • Processing times vary widely and no source can promise a date; build in margin before your enrolment deadline.
  • Remonstration against rejections was cancelled indefinitely from 1 July 2025, so a refusal means fixing the file or taking legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I apply for a German student visa from Pakistan?

You apply online through the Foreign Office Consular Services Portal. The Islamabad Embassy handles Punjab, Islamabad Capital Territory, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the Karachi Consulate General handles Sindh and Balochistan.

How much is the German student visa fee in Pakistan?

As of 26 October 2026 the Islamabad visa page lists EUR 75.00 for the long-term category D visa. It is due in PKR at the current exchange rate and paid in cash at the counter. Confirm the PKR amount when you are asked to pay.

How much money must I show for a German student visa?

The April 2026 Foreign Office leaflet gives EUR 992 per month, or EUR 11,904 per year. Older Pakistan mission documents show EUR 11,208 and EUR 10,236, so do not rely on them. Confirm the amount on the portal.

Do I still send documents in a sealed envelope?

Older checklists describe a sealed envelope left at the consulate gate. The current Islamabad page describes a digital process in which you upload documents to the portal and wait for screening. Use the instructions the portal gives you.

What happens if my documents are incomplete?

The Islamabad page says incomplete applications result in delayed processing, and missing degree certificates or transcripts keep the online registration halted. The officer may ask for corrected or additional documents instead of giving an appointment.

How long does a German national visa take from Pakistan?

The Islamabad page says all national visa processing times highly vary. Another German mission's April 2026 leaflet gives a standard 2 weeks, sometimes longer. Treat both as general statements and plan with generous margin.

Can I appeal if my visa is refused?

The Islamabad visa page says the remonstration procedure for visa rejections was cancelled indefinitely from 1 July 2025. Read the refusal reasons, consider a corrected new application, and take legal advice if you believe there was an error. Check the page for changes.

Do I need health insurance before the visa?

Yes, the leaflets ask for proof of adequate health insurance valid from your travel date. If your student health insurance starts later, you need additional incoming cover. See our guide on public and private insurance for students.

Do I need an APS certificate for Germany?

Requirements depend on your route and documents, and the Islamabad pages we read did not state the APS rule in the sections we reviewed. Check the portal questionnaire and our APS guide, and confirm before you pay for any verification.

Can an agent book my appointment?

Appointments are issued by the mission after screening your upload, so nobody can sell you a slot. An adviser can help you prepare the file, check documents and rehearse the interview. Be careful with anyone who asks for money to "get a date."

When should I start the visa application?

Start preparing documents as soon as you have admission, and register on the portal once your file is complete. One mission's April 2026 leaflet says applications can be submitted at the earliest six months before entry. Confirm the rule for your mission.

Can Border and Bridges promise me a German visa?

No. Only the German mission decides. We can check your file against the current requirements, help you prepare documents and the interview, and tell you plainly where the risks are.
