Anabin for Pakistani Students: How to Check If Your Degree Is Recognised in Germany (2026)

You check it in anabin, Germany's official recognition database, and you check two things, your university and your exact degree. anabin is the free, official database that the Standing Conference of state education ministers, the KMK, has run since 1997, and the data is managed by the Central Office for Foreign Education, the ZAB, in Bonn, as set out in the Federal Foreign Office guide to the anabin database. A Pakistani bachelor from an HEC recognised university is usually listed, but listing is not the whole answer. The university needs the right status and the degree needs the right evaluation, and both have to line up before a German university or a visa officer will treat your qualification as equal to a German one. This guide shows you how to run both searches, what each code means, and what to do when your degree is not there.

Guide to checking German university and degree recognition in the anabin database for Pakistani students in 2026

What is anabin and who runs it?

Think of anabin as Germany's master list of foreign qualifications. It tells German universities, the application service uni-assist, and the visa section how a foreign school, university, or degree compares to the German system. It is not a private website or a ranking. It is the official reference they all trust.

anabin is the free, official database that the Standing Conference of state education ministers, the KMK, has run since 1997, and the data is managed by the Central Office for Foreign Education, the ZAB, in Bonn, as set out in the Federal Foreign Office guide to the anabin database. You reach it at anabin.kmk.org, and you do not need an account to look. The public can search it, print the entries, and bring them to an application. That is the point. The German side wants a shared, neutral source of truth, and anabin is it.

One thing to fix in your head early. anabin, the ZAB, and uni-assist are three different things that people muddle. anabin is the database you search yourself. The ZAB is the office behind it, and the same office that issues a formal assessment when a case is not clear. uni-assist is the service many universities use to check your documents, and it reads anabin while doing so. Our guide to uni-assist for German university applications from Pakistan covers that last piece in full.

Why does anabin matter for a Pakistani student?

Admission is the first reason. Before a German university offers you a master's place, it wants to know your Pakistani bachelor is equal to a German bachelor. anabin is how it decides. If your university and degree show the right codes, the check is quick. If they do not, your file stalls while someone asks for more proof.

The visa is the second reason. The student visa process leans on the same recognition. A qualification the German system does not accept is a weak foundation for a study plan, and a weak study plan is a refusal risk. Getting anabin right early removes a problem before it starts.

There is a quieter reason too. Checking anabin yourself, months before you apply, tells you whether your plan is realistic at all. A student whose university sits at H- learns it in ten minutes online rather than after paying application fees. That is time and money saved, and it is why we tell every Germany client to open anabin on day one.

Practitioner note: Run both searches and take a screenshot or PDF of each result, with the date visible. Entries can be updated, and a dated printout of the status you relied on is exactly what you want in your file if a university or officer later asks how you knew your degree was recognised.

How do you check if your university is recognised?

Start with the institution. This is the first of the two searches, and it is quick once you know where to click.

  1. Open the institutions list. Go to anabin.kmk.org and open the Institutionen section.
  2. Choose the country. Select Pakistan from the country menu so the database only shows Pakistani institutions.
  3. Narrow by city or name. Pick your study location, or type part of your university's name to filter the list.
  4. Read the Status column. Find your university and look at the code next to it, which is the whole point of this search.

The database is in German, which throws some students, but the words you need are few. Institutionen means institutions. Suchen means search. Status is status. You are hunting for one short code next to your university's name, and the next section tells you how to read it.

What do H+, H+/- and H- mean?

This is the heart of it. In anabin the status column shows your university as H+, H+/- or H-, and H+ means it is a recognised higher education institution. The code is short, but it decides a lot.

  • An H+ status means the institution is recognised, and degrees from it are treated as valid higher education in Germany.
  • The H+/- code is a maybe. The institution can be recognised, but only for certain degrees or under certain conditions, so your specific degree has to be checked.
  • A rating of H- tells you the institution is not recognised, and degrees from it are generally not accepted for German university admission.

Most public and HEC chartered Pakistani universities show H+. If yours does, that is good news, but do not stop there. An H+ university does not by itself make your degree recognised. You still have to check the degree, because the status of the university and the evaluation of the degree are two separate findings. The uni-assist glossary entry for anabin states the same three codes, which is the second official source we checked this against.

How do you check if your degree is recognised?

Now the second search, the one people skip. For the qualification itself, anabin shows an evaluation, the Bewertung, of entspricht, gleichwertig or bedingt vergleichbar. You run it in the Hochschulabschlüsse section, which means higher education degrees.

  1. Open the degrees section. Choose Hochschulabschlüsse, then the search for degrees tab.
  2. Select Pakistan and then your field of study from the menus.
  3. Open the entry. Click the plus sign beside your degree to open the detail box.
  4. Read the Bewertung field. This shows entspricht, gleichwertig, or bedingt vergleichbar.

Here is the trap. The title of your degree has to match the anabin entry word for word. A Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is not the same entry as a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems. If your exact title is not there, do not force a near match. Treat it as not listed, which the later section covers. The terms entspricht and gleichwertig both point to a degree treated as comparable or equivalent. bedingt vergleichbar means only conditionally comparable, which is weaker and usually needs a closer look.

Not sure how to read your anabin result? Send us your university name and exact degree title on WhatsApp or call +92 321 4656927, and we will check both entries with you.

The selected course will be filled automatically. Submit saves the enquiry directly to our team, and Send WhatsApp opens a pre-filled WhatsApp message with the same details.

This field is optional.

When does your qualification actually count?

Both searches have to agree. A green light on one and a blank on the other is not enough. Your degree counts as recognised when the university is H+ and the degree evaluation is entspricht or gleichwertig, according to the Federal Foreign Office anabin instructions. There is a second accepted route as well, where the university is H+/- and your specific degree is listed under that university with an evaluation of entspricht or gleichwertig.

University statusDegree evaluationResult
H+entspricht or gleichwertigRecognised
H+/-Degree listed with the university, entspricht or gleichwertigRecognised
H+Degree not found, or no evaluation shownNeeds a ZAB assessment
H-AnyNot accepted for admission

If your case does not fit one of the two recognised rows, you do not argue with anabin. You move to the ZAB route. That is not a failure, it is simply the next official step, and plenty of valid degrees go through it.

What if your university or degree is not listed?

Missing from anabin does not mean worthless. It means anabin cannot settle your case on its own, so a human assessment has to. If anabin does not list your university or your degree, you apply to the ZAB for a Statement of Comparability, the Zeugnisbewertung. The ZAB reviews your documents and issues an official document stating how your foreign degree compares to a German one.

A ZAB Statement of Comparability is a paid service, typically costing around EUR 200, and you should confirm the current fee on the ZAB site before you apply. The assessment takes time, usually a couple of months once the ZAB has everything, so start it early if you think you will need it. You apply online, upload scans of your degree and transcripts, and pay the fee. The result is a certificate you can show universities and the visa section. Our page on the equivalent comparability statement route for another country shows how similar these systems are, though the German one is anabin and ZAB specifically.

A short word on the APS. Verification requirements for Pakistani applicants have shifted more than once, and sources do not always agree on the current position, so confirm what applies to you directly with the German missions. Our guide to the APS certificate for Germany explains how academic verification fits beside anabin, and we keep it current.

Common mistakes Pakistani students make with anabin

The errors here are predictable, and every one of them is avoidable.

  • Checking only the university and assuming an H+ means the degree is recognised. It does not. Check both.
  • Accepting a near match for the degree title instead of the exact wording anabin lists.
  • Panicking at a blank result and giving up, when the ZAB route is the normal next step.
  • Trusting a forum screenshot from years ago rather than opening the live database yourself.
  • Leaving it to the last week before an application deadline, with no time for a ZAB assessment if one is needed.

Do it early and do it yourself. anabin is free, it is in front of you, and ten minutes now can save a month later. If the German pathway is new to you, our overview of the cost of studying in Germany from Pakistan puts recognition in the wider picture of fees and funds.

A worked example with a Pakistani degree

Take Ayesha, a Karachi graduate with a four year Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from a public university, aiming for a master's in Germany for the winter 2027 intake.

  • October 2026: She opens anabin, searches Institutionen for Pakistan, finds her university, and sees H+ in the status column. She saves a dated PDF.
  • Same day: She searches Hochschulabschlüsse, finds Bachelor of Science matching her exact title, opens the entry, and reads gleichwertig in the Bewertung field.
  • Conclusion: H+ university plus a gleichwertig degree means recognised. No ZAB assessment needed.
  • November 2026: She applies through uni-assist, attaching her anabin printouts, and the document check moves quickly.
  • If her degree had been missing: she would have started a ZAB Statement of Comparability in October, allowing two months, rather than discovering the gap in January.

Notice the order. Ayesha checked recognition before she chose universities, not after. That is the habit we build with every Germany student. If you want us to run your anabin checks and plan the rest of your German application around the result, reach us through our contact page with your university and exact degree title.

What documents do you need for recognition?

Whether anabin settles your case or you move to a ZAB assessment, the paperwork is similar, so prepare it once and prepare it well. Sloppy documents are the most common reason a clean case slows down. German offices are precise, and they expect you to be.

At a minimum, keep clear scans of your degree certificate and your full academic transcript, the mark sheets that show every semester. If your documents are in Urdu, you will usually need a certified English or German translation by a sworn translator, not a casual one. The ZAB and many universities want the translation to sit beside the original, not replace it.

  • Degree certificate, the final award document from your university, scanned in full and in colour.
  • Complete transcript, every year or semester, so the grading and credit load are visible.
  • Certified translations, where the original is not in English or German, done by a recognised translator.
  • Passport copy, so the name on your documents matches your travel document exactly.

Name consistency matters more than students expect. If your degree says one spelling and your passport says another, fix the gap with an affidavit or a corrected document before you apply, because a mismatch invites questions you do not want during admission or at the visa stage. For how these documents are formally verified, our guide to the apostille and attestation of Pakistani documents walks through the stamps and offices involved.

One habit saves a lot of stress. Build a single folder, digital and physical, that holds your degree, transcripts, translations, passport copy, and your dated anabin printouts. You will reach for the same set at admission, at uni-assist, and again at the visa interview, so assembling it once and keeping it current is time very well spent.

Key takeaways

  • anabin is Germany's free official recognition database, run by the KMK with data managed by the ZAB.
  • Always run two searches, one for your university and one for your exact degree title.
  • H+ means the university is recognised, H+/- means it depends, and H- means it is not recognised.
  • Your degree counts when the university is H+ and the degree evaluation is entspricht or gleichwertig.
  • If your university or degree is not listed, apply to the ZAB for a Statement of Comparability.
  • Check early, match the degree title exactly, and keep dated printouts of both results.

Frequently asked questions

Is anabin free to use?

Yes. anabin is a free, public database at anabin.kmk.org, run by the KMK with data managed by the ZAB. You do not need an account to search it, and you can print the entries to use as proof in your application.

What does H+ mean in anabin?

H+ means the institution is a recognised higher education institution, and degrees from it are treated as valid in Germany. It is the status most HEC chartered Pakistani universities show, but it does not by itself make your specific degree recognised.

Is my Pakistani university recognised in Germany?

Most public and HEC chartered Pakistani universities show H+ in anabin. The only way to be sure for yours is to open anabin, search Institutionen for Pakistan, find your university, and read its status code.

Why do I have to check my degree as well as my university?

Because the university status and the degree evaluation are two separate findings. An H+ university with a degree that anabin does not evaluate still leaves your qualification unconfirmed, so both searches must line up.

What do entspricht and gleichwertig mean?

Both point to a degree that is treated as comparable or equivalent to a German one. If your degree shows either of these and your university is H+, your qualification is recognised. bedingt vergleichbar is weaker and usually needs a closer check.

My degree title is slightly different from the anabin entry. Does that matter?

Yes. The title has to match word for word. A Bachelor of Technology is not the same entry as a Bachelor of Science. If your exact title is not listed, treat the degree as not found and consider a ZAB assessment.

What if my university is not in anabin at all?

Then anabin cannot settle your case, and you apply to the ZAB for a Statement of Comparability. The ZAB reviews your documents and issues an official comparison to the German system, which you then use for admission and the visa.

How much does a ZAB Statement of Comparability cost?

It is a paid service, typically around EUR 200, though the exact amount can change. Check the current fee on the ZAB site before you apply, and allow for extra fees if you need more than one degree assessed.

How long does a ZAB assessment take?

Usually a couple of months once the ZAB has all your documents and your payment. That is why you should start it early if you think your degree is not covered by anabin, rather than near an application deadline.

Is anabin the same as the APS certificate?

No. anabin is a database you search to see how a degree is rated. The APS is a separate academic verification step, and the requirements for Pakistani applicants have changed over time, so confirm the current position with the German missions.

Can I use anabin printouts in my application?

Yes, and you should. Save a dated PDF or screenshot of both your university status and your degree evaluation. If a university or officer asks how you knew your degree was recognised, a dated printout is the clean answer.

Does the degree need to be from a public university to be H+?

No. Both public and private Pakistani institutions can be H+ if they are recognised. The status in anabin is what matters, not whether the university is public or private, so always check the actual entry.
