What Is OSHC and How Do Pakistani Students Get It for Australia? (2026)
Every Pakistani student on an Australian subclass 500 visa must hold Overseas Student Health Cover, known as OSHC, for the entire time they are in Australia. It is not optional. It is a visa condition, it must cover the full length of your course, and your visa end date is pinned to when your cover expires. OSHC pays for a defined set of medical and hospital costs, because international students cannot use Medicare, the public health system Australians rely on. Buy the wrong duration and your visa can be cut short. Buy the wrong plan and you carry the bill.

What is OSHC, and why is it compulsory?
OSHC is health insurance designed for international students in Australia. It exists because you, as a student visa holder, are not eligible for Medicare, the public scheme that covers Australian citizens and permanent residents. Without cover, a single night in an Australian hospital can cost thousands of dollars, and you would pay every cent yourself.
So the Australian Government made the cover a condition of the visa. Overseas Student Health Cover is a mandatory condition of the subclass 500 student visa, and it is how you satisfy visa condition 8501, which requires you to hold adequate health insurance for the whole time you are in Australia. The logic is simple and it protects you as much as the system. If you fall ill or have an accident, OSHC absorbs the defined costs instead of leaving a Pakistani family to wire emergency money across the world.
Think of it as part of the visa, not an add-on. No valid OSHC, no valid visa condition met.
Is OSHC really mandatory for the subclass 500 visa?
Yes, and there is no way around it for a normal student. The requirement sits in the Migration Regulations and is enforced through condition 8501, which appears on your visa grant. You have to show evidence of OSHC before the visa is decided, and you have to keep it in place the whole time you study.
A few narrow groups are exempt, for example students from countries that have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, or certain government-sponsored students. Pakistan does not have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, so a self-funded Pakistani student is squarely inside the OSHC requirement. If you are also preparing the rest of your file, our step-by-step guide to the subclass 500 visa from Pakistan shows where the OSHC evidence fits in the application.
What does OSHC cover, and what does it leave out?
This is where students get surprised, usually at the worst moment. OSHC is real cover, but it is not comprehensive. The compulsory basic plan usually covers visits to a doctor, some hospital treatment, ambulance transport and a limited amount of prescription medicine, and it does not cover dental, optical or physiotherapy.
To count as adequate, the cover must provide a per person benefit of at least AUD 1,000,000 per year. That million-dollar figure is a floor, not a ceiling, and it is one reason OSHC is worth having rather than resenting.
How claiming actually works
OSHC does not always mean free treatment at the counter. Some doctors bulk bill your OSHC directly, so you pay nothing on the day. Others charge you the full fee, and you claim part of it back afterwards through the provider app. The plan pays a set benefit, often a percentage of the scheduled fee for a GP visit, and you may be left with a gap to cover yourself. For hospital treatment the cover is stronger, but you still want to check whether your hospital and your insurer have a direct billing arrangement before you are admitted, not after.
| Usually covered by basic OSHC | Not covered by basic OSHC |
|---|---|
| Visits to a GP (doctor) | Dental treatment |
| Some in-hospital treatment | Optical, including glasses |
| Ambulance transport when medically necessary | Physiotherapy and most allied health |
| A limited amount of prescription medicine | Elective cosmetic treatment |
| Emergency care leading to admission | Treatment arranged before you arrive |
If you want the dental, optical and physio side covered, you buy an Extras plan on top, or a separate private policy. Many students never need it. Some, especially those wearing glasses or expecting dental work, decide it pays for itself.
Practitioner note. Read the waiting periods before you assume you are covered. Pregnancy and pre-existing conditions commonly carry a twelve-month wait, and psychiatric, rehabilitation and palliative care usually carry two months. A condition you already have will not be paid for on day one.
How long must your OSHC last?
Long enough to cover your whole stay, and the government is strict about it. At minimum your OSHC must cover the course length, and the Department of Home Affairs ties your visa end date to the expiry date of the cover you buy. You cannot buy twelve months of cover for a two-year degree and expect a two-year visa. The visa is granted only as far as your OSHC reaches.
The stay period itself follows a set of rules. A course of ten months or more that finishes in November or December usually gets a visa to 15 March of the following year, while other courses of that length are granted a stay period about two months longer than the course. The maximum length of stay on a student visa will generally not exceed 6 years. That means you should buy OSHC that runs a little past your course end date, not exactly to it, so your visa gets the normal buffer after study.
Why the buffer matters
If your course ends on 30 August, the department may grant a visa to about 30 October, but only if your OSHC also reaches that later date. Buy cover ending 30 August and you throw away the buffer, and possibly the graduation period you wanted. Match the OSHC to the visa length you actually want.

Border and Bridges has arranged Australian student files for Pakistani applicants since 2016, and we map the cover to the visa length you need. Send us your offer letter and course dates through our contact page and we will work the duration back for you.
Which companies are approved to sell OSHC?
You cannot buy OSHC from just any insurer. Only a small set of registered providers is approved to sell it. As of 22 September 2026, the Australian Government's Study Australia OSHC page lists six registered insurers approved to sell OSHC: ahm, Allianz Care Australia, Bupa, CBHS International Health, Medibank and nib.
Your university will often bundle OSHC from one of these into your enrolment, usually a default provider it has a relationship with. You are allowed to accept that or shop around. The cover has to meet the same minimum standard whichever one you pick, so the real differences are price, the size of the Extras options, and how easy the app and claims process are.
- Let the university arrange it, which is simplest and lands your Confirmation of Enrolment faster.
- Buy it yourself from an approved provider, which can be cheaper if you compare.
- Switch later if you find a better plan, using the portability rules that carry your membership across.
If the university is arranging your OSHC, it usually appears on your Confirmation of Enrolment, which is the document your visa application depends on.
How much does OSHC cost from Pakistan?
Here is the honest answer, and it is a range rather than a single number. OSHC premiums are set by the insurers rather than the government, so the price moves over time and differs from one provider to the next. A single student on a basic plan has typically paid somewhere in the region of a few hundred Australian dollars a year, with longer degrees costing proportionally more because you buy more months up front. Treat that only as a rough guide.
Because premiums change and vary by provider, the right move is to get a live quote from each approved insurer for your exact course length before you pay. Do not budget from an old figure a senior gave you two years ago. Prices have moved.
One more cost point students miss. OSHC reduces your medical bills, it does not erase them. A GP visit can still leave you a small gap, and a dentist or an optician sits outside the basic plan entirely. Build a modest health buffer into your monthly budget on top of the premium, so a single clinic trip does not throw your month off. It is a small habit that saves a lot of stress in the first term.
OSHC is one line in a much bigger budget. To see where it sits against tuition, rent and food, read our breakdowns of what it costs to study in Australia from Pakistan and how much you need per month to live in Australia.
How do you buy OSHC, step by step?
The order is straightforward once you know it.
- Get your offer and course dates. You need the exact start and end dates, because your cover length is built around them.
- Decide who arranges it. Either let the university bundle OSHC into your enrolment, or choose an approved provider yourself.
- Buy cover for the full period, plus a buffer. Match the end date to the visa length you want, not just to the last day of class.
- Pay and get the OSHC certificate. The provider issues a document showing the policy holder, the plan and the start and end dates.
- Add it to your visa application. Upload the certificate as your evidence of adequate health insurance.
- Activate it on arrival. Register your Australian address and set up the provider app so you can claim from day one.
Keep the certificate somewhere you can find it fast. You may be asked for it at the airport, at enrolment, and again if you ever extend your visa.
Check that the certificate shows the right things before you upload it. It should name you as the policy holder, state the plan type, and show start and end dates that match the visa length you are asking for. A certificate with the wrong dates is the quiet reason some applications get a request for more information, which delays the whole file. Two minutes of checking here saves weeks later.
Does OSHC cover your family?
If you bring your spouse or children as dependants on your visa, they must also be covered, and you buy a family OSHC policy rather than a single one. A single policy covers only you. A couple policy adds your spouse. A family policy adds children under eighteen.
Family OSHC costs more than single cover, sometimes considerably more, so factor it in early if your dependants are joining you. If you are weighing whether to bring family at all, our guide on whether the Australian post-study work visa route suits your longer plan can help you decide how the family piece fits over several years.
What OSHC does not replace
OSHC is medical cover, not a safety net for everything. It will not pay for a lost laptop, a cancelled flight or your belongings. It will not cover routine dental or new glasses on a basic plan. And it does not make you eligible for Medicare.
Two sensible add-ons close the common gaps. Travel insurance can cover your journey and possessions. An Extras OSHC plan or separate private cover can pick up dental, optical and physiotherapy if you expect to need them. Neither is compulsory, but both are cheaper than a surprise bill.
There is also a timing gap worth naming. OSHC covers treatment in Australia, not treatment arranged before you arrive or care you receive on the way. If you have a condition that needs immediate attention, do not assume the policy picks it up on landing, because pre-existing conditions usually carry a waiting period. Sort urgent care in Pakistan before you fly, and let OSHC handle what comes up once you are settled and studying. If health cover is shaping your wider choice of country, our overview of health insurance for Pakistani students studying abroad compares how different destinations handle it.
Common OSHC mistakes to avoid
- Buying too few months. The visa cannot outlast the cover. Short OSHC means a short visa.
- Cutting cover to the last class day. You lose the post-course buffer the visa would normally give you.
- Assuming everything is covered. Dental, optical and physio are not on a basic plan.
- Letting it lapse when you extend. A new visa needs current OSHC that reaches the new end date.
- Forgetting the family policy. Dependants need their own cover, and single OSHC will not do.
- Not activating the policy on arrival. An unactivated plan slows down your first claim.
A worked example with dates
Take Ayesha, starting a two-year master's in Melbourne on 24 February 2026, with a course end date of 20 November 2027.
- January 2026: Her university bundles OSHC from an approved provider, single cover, running from a week before arrival to 15 March 2028.
- Why to 15 March 2028: Because her course ends in November, the visa buffer usually runs to 15 March of the following year, so the OSHC is bought to match.
- February 2026: She uploads the OSHC certificate with her subclass 500 application as evidence of adequate cover.
- On arrival: She activates the policy, registers her Melbourne address and downloads the provider app.
- Mid-2027: She adds an Extras plan for six months because she needs dental work, keeping the basic OSHC underneath it.
- Late 2027: Her cover already reaches into 2028, so nothing lapses while she finishes and looks at post-study options.
One quiet decision in January, made correctly, and her visa length and cover line up for the whole degree.
Key takeaways
- OSHC is compulsory for the subclass 500 visa and satisfies condition 8501.
- It must cover your full course, and your visa end date follows your OSHC expiry.
- Basic OSHC covers GP, some hospital, ambulance and limited medicine, not dental, optical or physio.
- Only a few approved insurers can sell OSHC, and prices vary, so get live quotes.
- Bring family and you need a family policy, not single cover.
Frequently asked questions
Is OSHC compulsory for every Pakistani student in Australia?
Yes. For a self-funded Pakistani student on a subclass 500 visa, OSHC is a mandatory visa condition. Pakistan has no Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, so there is no exemption, and you must hold cover for your whole stay.
What is condition 8501?
Condition 8501 is the visa condition that requires you to maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while you are in Australia. For students, OSHC is how you meet it. Breaching it can put your visa at risk.
How long does my OSHC need to last?
At minimum it must cover the length of your course, and your visa end date is tied to your OSHC expiry. Because the visa usually gives a buffer after your course, buy cover that runs a little past your course end date so you keep that buffer.
What does basic OSHC actually cover?
A basic plan usually covers GP visits, some in-hospital treatment, ambulance transport when medically necessary, and a limited amount of prescription medicine. It does not cover dental, optical or physiotherapy, which need an Extras plan or separate private cover.
Which companies can sell OSHC?
Only a small set of registered insurers is approved. As of 2026 these are ahm, Allianz Care Australia, Bupa, CBHS International Health, Medibank and nib. Every approved plan meets the same minimum standard, so compare on price and service.
How much does OSHC cost?
Premiums are set by the insurers and change over time, so there is no fixed figure. A single basic plan has typically cost a few hundred Australian dollars a year, more for longer degrees. Get a live quote from each provider for your exact course length before paying.
Can I use Medicare instead of OSHC?
No. As a student visa holder you are generally not eligible for Medicare, so OSHC is your cover. Only a handful of countries with a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement get limited Medicare access, and Pakistan is not one of them.
Does my university have to arrange my OSHC?
No, but many do by default and it can speed up your Confirmation of Enrolment. You are free to buy from any approved provider yourself, which sometimes works out cheaper. Either way the cover must meet the same standard.
Does OSHC cover my spouse and children?
Only if you buy a couple or family policy. Single OSHC covers you alone. Dependants on your visa must have their own cover, and a family plan costs more, so budget for it if they are joining you.
What is the minimum benefit OSHC must provide?
To count as adequate, the cover must provide a per person benefit of at least AUD 1,000,000 per year. That is a floor set by the government, and approved OSHC plans are built to meet or exceed it.
What happens if my OSHC lapses?
You would be in breach of condition 8501, which can put your visa in jeopardy, and you would be uninsured for any treatment. If you extend your visa, you must show current OSHC reaching the new end date before the extension is granted.
Can I claim for dental or glasses on OSHC?
Not on a basic plan. Dental, optical and physiotherapy are excluded from basic OSHC. If you expect to need them, buy an Extras OSHC plan or a separate private policy on top of your basic cover.
