Validating Your VLS-TS in France: The Step Pakistani Students Must Not Miss in 2026

What is a VLS-TS, and why does it need validating?

France issues most degree students a long stay visa that doubles as a residence permit. The French name is visa de long sejour valant titre de sejour, shortened everywhere to VLS-TS, and the word that matters in that phrase is valant. The visa stands in for a residence card, which is why France does not hand you a plastic card in your first year.

The catch is that the substitution is conditional. The visa lets you enter. Validation is what converts it into a residence document with legal effect inside France. Until you validate, the visa is a travel authorisation and nothing more.

How the Pakistani route reaches this point

Pakistan is one of the countries on the Etudes en France list, so a Pakistani applicant goes through that platform at the pre-enrolment stage rather than applying straight through France-Visas. Pre-enrolment, the Campus France interview, the consular appointment and the visa all sit ahead of validation. By the time you land you have been through so many steps that one more feels optional. It is not.

What exactly is the three month deadline?

The clock runs from your date of arrival in France, not from the date the visa was issued and not from the start of the academic year. A student who lands on 12 September has until 12 December.

Two things sit inside that window and people confuse them.

• Your right to move in and out of the Schengen area during the first three months, which exists whether or not you have validated.
• Your right to remain lawfully in France after those three months, which exists only if you have validated.

For the first three months after arrival you may leave France and return without having validated, but once that window closes an unvalidated holder needs a fresh visa to come back. That is the practical sting. A student who flies home to Lahore in January without having validated can find the return journey blocked.

How do you validate it, step by step?

The process is entirely digital. There is no appointment, no queue at a prefecture and no medical visit for students. You do it from your room.

Step one: gather what the form asks for

• A working email address that you will keep, because your login details arrive there.
• The visa itself: number, date of issue, start and end of validity, and the reason for stay printed on it.
• Your date of arrival in France.
• Your address in France.
• A payment card, or an electronic tax stamp bought in advance.

Step two: open the government portal

The site is the administration for foreigners in France, at administration-etrangers-en-france.interieur.gouv.fr. That is the only place this is done. Anyone charging you a fee to fill in this form is charging you for something you can complete yourself in twenty minutes.

Step three: enter the visa and personal details

Copy the visa details exactly as printed. A transposed digit in the visa number is the most common reason the form rejects an entry, and the field is unforgiving. Then add your family circumstances, telephone number and email.

Step four: the arrival date and the French address

Enter the date you actually entered France. Use the address where you are living, whether that is a CROUS residence, a private studio or a room in a shared flat. If you move later, you update it; you do not redo the validation.

Step five: pay

Payment completes the validation. Nothing is validated until the money is taken. Keep the receipt.

Step six: save the two emails

You receive one email with your login details for the portal account and one confirming the information you submitted. Download the confirmation and keep it somewhere you can find it in a year. It carries the identification number you will need at renewal, and reconstructing it later is tedious.

What does validation cost?

Here the official sources do not line up, and you should know that before you budget.

As of 25 September 2026, the Service Public page on the student long stay visa puts the validation fee at 150 euros, while Campus France, the French government agency for international students, states on its own validation page that you pay a stay tax of 100 euros, so the two official sources disagree and you should treat anything from 100 to 150 euros as the likely charge. Both pages were refreshed in the summer of 2026, and French residence fees were revised during that year, which is the likely reason for the gap.

Budget for the higher figure. If the portal charges less on the day, you are pleasantly surprised rather than short of money in a foreign country during your first fortnight.

As of 25 September 2026, Service Public prices the first student residence card at 150 euros, made up of a 100 euro tax and a 50 euro stamp duty, paid by electronic tax stamp. That is a separate payment from validation, made a year later, and students often forget to plan for it.

What if you have no bank card in France yet?

This is the practical blocker for many Pakistani students, because opening a French account takes days and often needs a proof of address you do not yet have.

You are not stuck. Campus France confirms that an electronic tax stamp, the timbre electronique, can be bought at a kiosk or a dedicated terminal and paid for in cash. You then enter the stamp reference on the portal instead of paying by card. Tabacs and some public terminals sell them.

The sequencing that actually works

1. Move into your accommodation and get a proof of address, even a residence attestation.
2. Buy the electronic stamp in cash if the bank account is not open yet.
3. Validate the visa with the stamp reference.
4. Open the bank account afterwards, using the validation confirmation as one of your documents.

Doing it in that order avoids the circular problem where the bank wants a residence document and the residence document wants a bank card.

What do you get once it is validated?

Three things, and each one matters during the year.

• Lawful residence in France for the whole validity period printed on the visa.
• The right to cross the Schengen border and return without applying for anything new.
• A confirmation document with an identification number that your prefecture, your bank and your university will all ask for at some point.

A student VLS-TS is issued for a period of four months to one year, after which a student residence card takes over. A one year masters is usually covered end to end. A three year bachelor is not, which is why the renewal section below matters more than students expect in their first term.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

Nothing arrives in the post to warn you. The consequence simply exists.

After three months without validation your stay is irregular, even though the visa in the passport has not expired. Leaving France then means applying for a new visa to return, from Pakistan, with everything that implies for an academic year already in progress. Renewal applications from an irregular position are harder, and the late regularisation charge of 180 euros can come into play.

If you have already missed it

Do not leave France while you sort it out. Contact your university's international office the same week, because most French institutions have a dedicated desk that deals with the prefecture regularly. The path back is usually a direct residence permit application rather than a late validation, and that is handled at the prefecture, not on the validation portal.

What resources does France expect you to hold?

As of 25 September 2026, the same Service Public page requires a student to show resources of at least 877.50 euros per month, assessed against the individual situation. The figure is not a one off bank balance. It is a monthly capability, and the prefecture reads the evidence as a whole.

Acceptable evidence takes several forms, and you can combine them.

• French government scholarships and European programme awards, evidenced by the award letter.
• A scholarship from Pakistan, with a certificate from the paying body stating the amount and duration.
• Your last three payslips where you already work in France.
• Third party support, shown by the sponsor's identity document plus bank evidence of scheduled regular transfers, or a sworn undertaking to pay sums reaching the monthly figure.
• Your own savings, shown by a bank attestation of a sufficient credit balance.

The sponsor route is the common one for Pakistani families, and the phrase that matters is regular transfers. A single large deposit is weaker evidence than a documented monthly pattern. What comes after the VLS-TS expires?

A student residence card. The application is online only, and the timing window is narrow.

The renewal application opens at the earliest four months and closes at the latest two months before your current document expires, and it is filed only online. Open it too early and the system will not accept you. Leave it too late and the regularisation charge appears.

What the renewal file contains

• Proof of enrolment for the coming year.
• Transcripts for the year just finished, plus any degree or certificate of achievement obtained in France.
• Proof of resources at the monthly level described above.
• A signed copy of the commitment to respect the principles of the Republic.
• Proof of address.

The first card is valid for one year and renewable. After a year of stay, students on certain courses can be issued a multi year card valid for two to four years, which removes the annual queue. Ask your institution whether your course qualifies before you assume the annual renewal is permanent.

The academic condition nobody reads

Renewal is not automatic. The prefecture looks at whether you actually progressed. Repeating a year once is survivable; repeating twice with no explanation is where files are refused. Keep evidence of anything that disrupted a year, including medical documents.

What goes wrong most often on Pakistani files?

The pattern is consistent, and none of these are difficult to avoid.

• Treating validation as optional because the visa has not expired.
• Waiting for a French bank card when an electronic tax stamp would have done the job in cash.
• Entering a visa number with a typo and giving up when the portal rejects it.
• Using a family member's email address, then losing access to the login details a year later.
• Booking a December flight home before checking whether validation is done.
• Budgeting for the visa fee and forgetting the validation charge and the card fee that follows it.
• Filing the renewal in the final fortnight, when the window closed two months before expiry.
• Letting the monthly resource evidence lapse after the consulate stage, then scrambling at renewal.
