Short Courses in Canada Under 6 Months: Do Pakistani Students Need a Study Permit? (2026)

You generally do not need a Canadian study permit for a course shorter than 6 months, but a Pakistani passport holder still needs a visitor visa to enter, because Pakistan is on IRCC's visa-required list. The exemption removes the permit, not the visa, and it does not allow work. Treat anything close to 6 months as a study permit case.

Short course in Canada under 6 months without a study permit for Pakistani students

Do you need a study permit for a short course in Canada?

Most international students need a study permit. A small group does not. If your program is short enough, Canada treats you as a visitor who happens to be taking classes, not as a student, and you can enrol without a permit.

IRCC's page on who can study without a permit says: "You don't need a study permit if you're coming to Canada for a program that lasts 6 months or less." It also notes that most foreign nationals need a study permit, and that the cases it lists are exceptions. You can read the rule on the IRCC study without a permit page.

That sounds simple. It is not, for three reasons. First, the cut-off is worded differently on different IRCC pages. Second, the exemption does not remove the need for a visa. Third, a short course does not work as a back door into a longer one.

This guide is for Pakistani students and parents weighing a language course, a summer program or a short professional course. If your plan is a diploma or degree, read our step-by-step study permit guide instead.

Who this applies to

  • Students planning an English or French course of a few weeks or months.
  • School pupils joining a summer program.
  • Graduates taking a short professional or skills course before applying elsewhere.
  • A parent wondering whether a child can try Canada before committing to a full program.

Where exactly is the 6 month line?

IRCC's guidance on who can study without a permit says you do not need a study permit for a program of 6 months or less, while its help centre answer on short study says a program or course of less than 6 months. The two pages word the boundary differently, so any course close to 6 months should be treated as needing a study permit.

The help centre answer on short study is on the IRCC short study answer. It states: "You don't need a study permit if your program or course is less than 6 months." The wording on the permit exemption page says 6 months or less. The two sentences differ by a single day at the edge, and a visa officer has to decide on facts, not on a page that you quote back to them.

Our advice is practical. Plan any short course to finish clearly under 6 months, with a buffer for a late start or a delayed arrival. If your dates run near the line, apply for a study permit. A study permit costs more effort, but it removes the argument.

Why the edge matters

A course that is 26 weeks long on the brochure may include an orientation week, a placement test and a final assessment. The length that counts is the length of the program as the school defines it, not the weeks you personally attend. Ask the school for a letter that states the start date, end date and total length.

Tip: Ask the school to state the course length in calendar days on the acceptance letter. A letter that says 24 weeks leaves less room for misreading than one that says half a year.

Which travel document does a Pakistani student need?

The IRCC short study answer is clear that you still need a valid travel document, either an electronic travel authorization or a visitor visa, to come to Canada. Which one depends on your passport. The IRCC entry requirements by country page lists Pakistan among the visa-required countries, and says citizens of those countries need a valid visitor visa and a valid passport to visit or transit through Canada.

So a Pakistani student attending a short course applies for a visitor visa, formally a temporary resident visa. You do not apply for a study permit, and you do not apply for an eTA. We read the country list on one IRCC page, so check it again on the day you apply.

Biometrics normally go with the application. Our biometrics guide explains the appointment process, fee and timing for Pakistani applicants, and the same logic applies to a visitor visa.

Be honest about the purpose

State that you are coming for a short course. Attach the school's letter. A visitor visa application that describes a study trip as tourism, then produces a class timetable at the border, creates a misrepresentation problem that can follow you into every later application. Honesty here is both the rule and the safer strategy.

What should the visitor visa file contain?

IRCC's visitor visa application page says a bank statement covering at least 6 months shows you can support yourself during your stay, and that an employer letter on official letterhead, dated no more than 3 months before you apply, can show a stable job you will return to. It also suggests a letter of invitation, travel history and an itinerary. We read these points on one page, so confirm them when you apply.

  • A valid passport with enough validity and your previous visas.
  • The school's acceptance letter with the course start date, end date and fees.
  • Proof that you paid or can pay the tuition, such as a receipt or bank transfer record.
  • A bank statement showing the funds for tuition, flights and living costs.
  • An employer or university letter proving what you return to.
  • An itinerary with accommodation details.
  • A short letter explaining the purpose of the trip and your plan to return.

The strongest files tell one consistent story. The course fits your career or study plan, the money matches the cost, and your life in Pakistan gives you reasons to come back. A file with unexplained deposits or a course that does not fit your background invites questions.

If the school is an unfamiliar private provider, verify it before paying. Our acceptance letter verification guide shows how to check a Canadian acceptance letter, and the same caution applies to short course offers.

What does the application cost?

As of 20 October 2026, IRCC's visitor visa application page lists the biometrics fee at CAD 85 for an individual, with families paying up to CAD 170 when they apply together.

IRCC's page lists a visitor visa processing fee of CAD 100 for an individual. We were able to see that figure on the visitor visa application page only, so we do not present it as double-checked. Look at IRCC's live fee list before you pay, and budget for biometrics on top. The biometrics figure also appears on IRCC's visitor visa application information page.

Remember the costs beyond government fees: tuition, flights, accommodation, insurance, and the cost of documents. A short course is not automatically cheap.

How long can you stay?

IRCC says on its visitor stay length answer that most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada, and that the border services officer may allow a shorter or longer stay.

The visa and the authorized stay are separate limits. IRCC's visitor visa page says a visa can be valid for a maximum of 10 years, capped by the passport or biometrics expiry, while the authorized stay without a passport stamp is 6 months from the day you enter, again subject to those expiries. A visa officer has discretion to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

For a short course, the border officer will usually look at your return date and your course letter. Carry both. If you have a stamp or document with a departure date, that date controls, not the date on the visa.

  • Arrive close to the course start date, not months earlier.
  • Keep your return ticket booking available.
  • Leave on or before the date recorded by the officer.
  • If you need more time, apply for an extension at least 30 days before your stay ends.

Can you work during a short course?

No. A visitor visa does not authorize employment, and the short course exemption does not change that. The exemption concerns the study permit only.

Pakistani families sometimes hear that students can cover costs with part-time work from the first week. That applies to students holding a study permit with work conditions, not to visitors. If you cannot fund the whole stay without working, the short course route is the wrong one for you.

Can you turn a short course into a longer one?

This is the question that matters most. IRCC's answer on applying from inside Canada says that most people cannot apply for a study permit while in Canada. It links to a tool that shows whether you can, and it lists exceptions that do not cover an ordinary visitor.

If you can see yourself continuing, do not rely on switching. Apply for the study permit from Pakistan before you travel, and plan the full program from the start. Our step-by-step study permit guide walks through that process, and the provincial attestation letter guide explains the provincial letter that most applications need.

The same IRCC short study answer states that you must get a study permit if you want to study for longer than 6 months. A school that tells you to arrive on a visitor visa and sort it out later is giving you advice that can leave you with a refusal and a nonrefundable tuition payment.

What a short course does and does not do for a later application

  • A clean trip can show you travelled, followed visa rules and returned on time.
  • Credit toward a degree exists only if the school says so in writing.
  • No school or visa office gives you priority because of it.
  • A past refusal stays on file whatever you study next.

Short course or study permit: which one fits?

Choose the visitor route if your course is clearly under 6 months, you can fund it without work, and you have no plan to extend. Choose the study permit route if the course is near 6 months, you may extend, or you want any chance of work rights or later conversion to a longer program.

  • Visitor visa suits a 4 to 12 week language course with a return date and a clear job or study base in Pakistan.
  • A study permit suits a 6 month certificate, any program with an optional second term, or any course you might extend.
  • Neither route suits a course from a school you cannot verify.

For readers comparing destinations, our UK short-term study visa guide covers the equivalent rule for the United Kingdom, which differs in length limits and visa type.

If the school you chose is not on the list of designated learning institutions, remember that only study at a DLI can feed into later study permit and work permit routes. Our DLI check guide shows how to check.

What can go wrong?

  • A visitor visa refusal because the officer doubts you will leave, with funds or ties as the usual concern.
  • Misreading the cut-off and booking a course that turns out to need a permit.
  • Paying a school before checking it exists and offers the course described.
  • Arriving on a visitor visa and working informally, which can lead to removal and later refusals.
  • Overstaying the date recorded by the border officer.
  • Assuming a short course will convert into a long one on the spot.

None of this is exotic. Each risk is manageable if you ask the right question before paying. The expensive mistakes are the ones that happen after the tuition has left your account.

What does a realistic timeline look like?

Take Usman, a composite example and not a real client. He is a final-year business student in Lahore who wants a 10 week English and business communication course in Toronto during the summer of 2027.

  1. November 2026: Usman asks the school for the course dates and a written confirmation that the course is 70 days long, then checks the school's details.
  2. December 2026: he gathers his passport, bank statements, a letter from his university and the acceptance letter.
  3. January 2027: he submits the visitor visa application and gives biometrics, then waits for a decision.
  4. May 2027: with a visa in hand, he books flights for a date just before the course starts and a return ticket for after it ends.
  5. July to September 2027: he completes the course and leaves on the date in his passport.

If Usman had planned a 7 month course, or had hoped to stay on for a second term, he would have been in study permit territory and should have applied for one from Pakistan before travelling. The example is illustrative. Dates, fees and rules are not, so check the current IRCC pages for your own case.

Key takeaways

  • A course clearly under 6 months does not need a study permit, but a Pakistani passport holder still needs a visitor visa.
  • IRCC words the 6 month boundary slightly differently on different pages, so keep a buffer or apply for a permit.
  • A visitor visa does not allow work.
  • Most people cannot switch to a study permit from inside Canada, so decide before you travel.
  • Be honest about the purpose and verify the school before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a study permit for a course shorter than 6 months in Canada?

Generally no. IRCC says you do not need a study permit for a short program, but you still need a valid travel document. For a Pakistani passport holder that is a visitor visa, because Pakistan is on IRCC's visa-required list.

What is the exact cut-off, 6 months or less than 6 months?

IRCC's two pages word it differently. One says 6 months or less and another says less than 6 months. Because of that mismatch, a course of exactly 6 months or close to it should be planned as a study permit case.

Can a Pakistani student come to Canada on a visitor visa to study?

Yes, for a short course that falls inside the exemption, provided the visitor visa application is honest about the purpose. State that you are coming for a short course and attach the school's letter. Do not describe the trip as tourism.

Can I work during a short course on a visitor visa?

No. A visitor visa does not authorize work. The short-course exemption removes the study permit requirement, not the rules about employment. Plan to fund the whole stay from savings and family support.

Can I switch to a study permit while I am in Canada?

Probably not. IRCC says most people cannot apply for a study permit while in Canada. If you may want a longer program afterwards, plan to apply from Pakistan before you travel.

How long can I stay in Canada on a visitor visa?

IRCC says most visitors can stay up to 6 months, and the border services officer sets the actual date and writes it in your passport. The visa's expiry date and your authorized stay are separate limits.

How much does the visitor visa cost?

IRCC's application page lists CAD 100 for an individual and CAD 85 for biometrics, but we could only confirm the biometrics fee on two IRCC pages. Check the live fee list on the day you pay, because fees change.

Does the school need to be a designated learning institution?

The IRCC pages we read do not tie the exemption to a DLI, but we have not confirmed that point beyond them. Only DLI study is usually what counts toward later study permit and work permit routes, so check the school's status before you pay.

Will a short course help my later study permit application?

It can show genuine interest and a clean travel record, but it carries no weight as a formal credit. A refusal for a short visit, on the other hand, stays in your file. Apply only when your documents are ready.

What if I want to extend the course past 6 months?

Then you needed a study permit from the start. IRCC says you must get a study permit if you want to study for longer than 6 months. Talk to us before you book a course that might be extended.

What documents should a short-course visitor visa file include?

IRCC recommends a bank statement covering at least 6 months, an employer letter dated within 3 months, a letter of invitation if you have one, travel history and an itinerary. Add the school's acceptance letter and fee receipt.

Can Border and Bridges check my short course before I book flights?

Yes. We review the course length, the school and your travel history against IRCC's published rules and tell you plainly whether a visitor visa or a study permit fits. We cannot promise a visa decision, and no consultant can.

Not sure which route fits your course? Border and Bridges is verified by SECP, FBR, ICEF and the British Council, and we have advised Pakistani students from Johar Town, Lahore since 2016. We check the course length, the school and your documents against IRCC's published rules before you pay anyone. Contact us or message us on WhatsApp +92 321 4656927, or call +92 321 4656927.

The selected course will be filled automatically. Submit saves the enquiry directly to our team, and Send WhatsApp opens a pre-filled WhatsApp message with the same details.
