UK Pre-Sessional English Course and a Combined CAS: Rules for Pakistani Students (2026)
If your UK offer needs a pre-sessional English course first, you can sometimes get one CAS and one visa for both, but only if the pre-sessional is 3 months or shorter, your main course starts within 1 month after it ends, and your university qualifies. Under rule ST 15.1 of Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules, a single Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies can be assigned for a combined pre-sessional course and a main course at degree level or above by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance, if the pre-sessional lasts no longer than 3 months and the main course begins no more than 1 month after it ends. If any of those conditions fails, the route changes and so does your cost, your timeline and your risk. This guide explains who qualifies, what English level you need, how the visa works, and the traps that catch Pakistani applicants every September.

What is a pre-sessional course, and why do offers include one?
A pre-sessional course is an English language programme that prepares you for your main degree. Many universities give a conditional offer to strong applicants whose IELTS or equivalent result sits slightly below the programme's requirement. The condition reads something like: complete our pre-sessional course at the required level, and you may progress to the degree without a new test.
For a Pakistani student this is a common and sensible route. A bachelor's graduate from Lahore with a good academic record and an IELTS Academic overall of 6.0 may need 6.5 for a master's course. A pre-sessional can bridge the gap without a second round of exams. The important point is that the visa rules treat it differently from a normal degree, and the mistakes happen in the paperwork, not in the classroom.
Is a pre-sessional the same as a foundation year?
No. The Home Office caseworker guidance describes a pre-sessional course as one that prepares a student for their intended full-time course of study in the UK, usually supplementary English language training, and treats foundation courses that form part of the main course as something else. If your offer mentions a "foundation" or "International Year One", ask your university which category it falls into before you assume the rules in this guide apply.
Why does the visa treatment matter?
Because a Student visa is tied to a course, a sponsor and dates. Two separate courses can mean two separate applications, two fees, two healthcare surcharge payments, and two chances for something to go wrong. A combined arrangement can mean one of each. The difference can be worth hundreds of pounds and weeks of waiting.
What is a combined CAS?
A CAS is the reference number your sponsor issues, and the visa application is built around it. Normally one CAS covers one course. The rules in Appendix Student list this as a recognised exception to the one-course approach.
Read the conditions piece by piece, because each one is a separate way to fail:
- Sponsor status. The wording refers to a higher education provider with a track record of compliance. Not every licensed sponsor is in that group, so ask your university directly.
- X followed by a lower-level course does not fit this specific rule.
- Pre-sessional length. It must last no longer than 3 months. A longer English programme is outside the combined route.
- Start date. The main course must begin no more than 1 month after the pre-sessional ends. A long gap between the two breaks the link.
There is a further set of conditions that depend on your English level and how it is assessed. The next section covers that.
Ask your university one precise question. Write: "Will you issue a single CAS covering the pre-sessional and my main course under Appendix Student ST 15.1?" A vague reply such as "we sponsor international students" does not answer it. Keep the written answer with your application documents.
What English level do you need?
Rule ST 13.1 in Appendix Student asks for English at CEFR level B1 where the applicant is studying a pre-sessional course or a course below bachelor's degree level, and level B2 for a bachelor's degree or above. That seems to say that a lower level of English is accepted when you enter through a pre-sessional. The official GOV.UK knowledge of English page shows the same split in its table: degree level or above is equivalent to CEFR level B2, and below degree level is CEFR level B1. It does not discuss pre-sessionals, so the detail comes from the Appendix.
The rules then add conditions for combined courses. Where you are assessed at B2, the CAS must confirm that you hold an unconditional offer of a place on the main course. Where you are assessed at B1 by a method other than your sponsor, the CAS must confirm that the sponsor is satisfied you will have at least B2 by the end of the pre-sessional. So the sponsor is the party who takes responsibility for the jump from B1 to B2, and it has to say so on the CAS.
How does this connect to IELTS for UKVI?
Your evidence of English must come from an approved source for the visa route. If your university assesses you itself, that is one path. If you use a test, you must choose a version the Home Office accepts for visa purposes. Our explainer on IELTS for UKVI versus IELTS Academic shows how to check which version your route needs before you book anything.
What do the CEFR levels mean in practice?
B1 is an intermediate user who can handle everyday communication and simple academic tasks with effort. B2 is an independent user who can follow lectures, write structured essays and take part in seminars. A B1 student on a pre-sessional is usually someone with real ability who needs academic English polish. That is why the sponsor's confirmation matters: it is a professional judgement that the pre-sessional will close the gap.
What study hours must the course involve?
Rule ST 8.2 in Appendix Student describes a pre-sessional course as a full-time course involving a minimum of 15 hours per week of classroom-based daytime study. The word "full-time" is the part students overlook. A flexible, evening or online-only English programme that does not meet the hours and the classroom-based requirement is a poor fit for a Student visa, however good the teaching.
The GOV.UK page on the course you can study sets a similar hours rule for full-time courses below degree level, at least 15 hours a week of organised daytime study. It does not mention pre-sessionals, which is why the Appendix is the source to rely on. When you read your university's offer, look for the weekly timetable and confirm that the hours meet the 15-hour minimum.

What if the combined rules are not met?
Then the pre-sessional and the main course cannot be bundled under that single CAS rule. In our reading of the Home Office caseworker guidance, the sponsor may sponsor the pre-sessional on its own, with an additional period of one month, and you would apply separately for the main course afterwards. That reading rests on a summary of the guidance rather than a verbatim quote, so confirm the exact position with your university's international office before relying on it.
Separate applications bring separate requirements. For the second application, which would be made from inside the UK, you would need to meet the usual tests again, including your funds and the genuine student assessment. Our guide to the UK credibility interview shows what caseworkers look for, and it is worth reading even if you expect a smooth case.
How does the 28 day rule fit?
The Home Office extension guidance states that a new course must begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring when you apply to extend. A gap between a pre-sessional visa and a main course visa therefore needs careful dating. Do not guess the dates. Ask the university to put them in writing and match them to your visa expiry.
What does the visa route cost?
As of 30 October 2026, the GOV.UK Student visa page gives the fee to apply for a Student visa from outside the UK as £558. The same page confirms that the fee is the same to extend or switch from inside the UK, and that you pay the visa fee for each person who joins you. If a separate application is needed for the main course, the fee applies again.
As of 30 October 2026, the GOV.UK page on how much the healthcare surcharge costs gives £776 per year for students, so a visa of that length costs a multiple of that figure. A combined route therefore means one healthcare surcharge payment for the full visa length, while two separate visas mean two payments. The surcharge rules also have exemptions, for example for some applications for six months or less from outside the UK, so check the live page when you apply. We explain how it works in our guide to the UK immigration health surcharge for Pakistani students.
We could not retrieve the official visa fees table during our check, so we have not quoted any figure beyond the two above. For the overall cost picture, including tuition and living costs, read how much a UK student visa costs from Pakistan.
How do you apply, step by step?
- Read your offer for the condition wording. Find the English requirement, the pre-sessional length and the main course start date.
- Ask the university which CAS structure it will use. Combined or separate, in writing.
- Check the dates. Pre-sessional length of 3 months or less, and main course starting within 1 month after it ends.
- Confirm your English evidence. A UKVI-accepted test or the university's own assessment, as the route allows.
- Collect your funds evidence. Fees and living costs for the visa period, in the form the rules require.
- Apply with the CAS reference. Make sure every detail on the application matches the CAS exactly.
- Prepare for questions. Be ready to explain why you chose a pre-sessional and how it fits your plan.
For the broader application sequence, our step by step UK student visa guide shows where this fits, and our explainer on the CAS letter covers what each field means.
Combined CAS or separate applications?
| Point | Combined CAS | Separate applications |
|---|---|---|
| Number of CAS | One | One per course |
| Visa applications | One, from Pakistan | One from Pakistan, a second later |
| Visa fee | Paid once | Paid for each application |
| Healthcare surcharge | Paid once for the full period | Paid for each application |
| Pre-sessional length | 3 months or less | Any length the sponsor can support |
| Gap before main course | No more than 1 month | Must fit the 28 day extension rule |
| Who can use it | Qualifying higher education providers | Any licensed sponsor |
| Main risk | Dates or conditions fail | Second application refused or delayed |
The table is a planning aid. The details of your case, especially your sponsor's status and your English assessment, decide which column you are in.
Which mistakes do Pakistani applicants make?
- Assuming every university can issue a combined CAS. The rule names providers with a track record of compliance. Ask.
- Choosing a pre-sessional longer than 3 months. A six-month English programme is a different structure.
- Leaving too much time between courses. The main course must begin within 1 month after the pre-sessional ends.
- Booking the wrong IELTS version. A test not accepted for the visa route wastes weeks and money.
- Paying the deposit before checking the structure. Refund terms for deposits vary, so confirm them first.
- Treating the pre-sessional as informal. Attendance and engagement still matter, and a poor record can create trouble later.
- Using an agent's summary instead of the CAS. The CAS is the document the Home Office sees. Read every line.
What does a realistic timeline look like?
This is an illustration only. Zainab, a graduate from Lahore, holds an unconditional-subject-to-English offer for a September master's at a university with a good compliance record. Her IELTS result is just below the requirement.
- March: she asks the university whether a combined CAS is available and receives a written yes for a pre-sessional that starts in July.
- April: she confirms the pre-sessional is a full-time, classroom-based programme and checks the weekly hours against the 15-hour minimum.
- May: the university issues one CAS covering the pre-sessional and the master's, and she checks that the dates show a main course start within a month after the pre-sessional ends.
- Late May: she applies with her CAS, funds evidence and English evidence.
- Early July: she travels and begins the pre-sessional.
- September: she progresses to the main course without a second visa application.
What protected her was asking the exact question early and checking the dates against the rule. Nothing clever.

- Get the CAS structure confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get one CAS for a pre-sessional and my degree?
Sometimes. Appendix Student allows a single CAS for a combined pre-sessional and a degree-level main course at a qualifying higher education provider, if the pre-sessional is 3 months or less and the main course starts within 1 month after it ends. Ask your university in writing.
How long can the pre-sessional be?
For the combined CAS route the rule says no longer than 3 months. Longer English programmes fall outside that specific rule, so the structure of your visa would change.
What is the maximum gap before the main course?
The main course must begin no more than 1 month after the pre-sessional ends under the combined CAS rule. Ask the university to confirm both dates in writing.
What English level do I need for a pre-sessional?
Appendix Student asks for CEFR level B1 where the applicant is studying a pre-sessional course, and B2 for a bachelor's degree or above. For a combined course the CAS must also confirm the sponsor's view of your progress to B2.
Does the pre-sessional have to be full-time?
Appendix Student describes it as a full-time course with a minimum of 15 hours per week of classroom-based daytime study. Check the weekly timetable in your offer.
Do I pay the visa fee twice if my courses are separate?
If the courses need separate applications, each application carries its own fee. GOV.UK currently gives £558 for a Student visa, so check the live page before you pay.
Do I pay the healthcare surcharge twice?
Each visa application usually carries its own surcharge, based on the length of that visa. GOV.UK currently gives £776 per year for students, with some exemptions, so check the live page.
Is a foundation year the same as a pre-sessional?
No. The Home Office guidance treats courses that form part of the main course differently from pre-sessional English training. Ask your university how it classifies your programme.
Which IELTS version should I take?
It depends on your route and whether your university assesses you itself. If you use a test, choose a version approved for the visa route you are using, and check before you book.
What if my university will not issue a combined CAS?
Then expect separate applications, or consider whether another institution offers a better structure. Ask for the reason in writing so you can decide before paying a deposit.
Can a pre-sessional refusal affect my main course?
Possibly. A refusal on the first application can affect the next one, since the second application is judged on its own evidence and your history. Take advice before reapplying.
Should I pay my deposit before the structure is confirmed?
It is safer not to. Confirm the CAS structure, the dates and the refund terms first, and keep the written replies with your records.
