Sweden Student Residence Permit From Pakistan: Funds, Fee and the New Work Rules (2026)

Yes, a Pakistani student admitted to a Swedish university must hold a residence permit for studies before travelling, and for applications made in 2026 you must show SEK 10,656 per month for the whole permit period, pay a SEK 1,500 fee, and plan around a new cap of 15 working hours a week. The permit is decided by the Swedish Migration Agency, Migrationsverket, not by your university, and you cannot enter Sweden to study while the application is pending. Most refusals in this category come from money that is not clearly yours, a late tuition payment, or an application filed too close to the start of term.

Sweden student residence permit for Pakistani students explained for 2026

Do Pakistani students need a residence permit to study in Sweden?

Yes. A Pakistani passport holder who plans to study at a Swedish university, university college or higher vocational programme for more than three months needs a residence permit for studies. Stays shorter than three months generally need a visa rather than a permit, and the two should not be confused. A short course visa does not let you start a degree.

The permit covers first cycle (bachelor's) and second cycle (master's) studies. Distance learning does not qualify, because the whole idea is that you are physically studying in Sweden. Doctoral candidates follow a separate route that is not covered here.

The practical consequence is simple. You cannot fly to Sweden on a tourist visa and sort out the permit once you arrive. The permit has to be issued before you travel, and as a general rule you apply from outside the country. Students who ignore this lose their place for that intake.

If Sweden is still one of several options on your list, our full guide to studying in Sweden from Pakistan covers universities, tuition and scholarships. This article stays narrow on purpose: the permit itself, the money, and what changed this year.

What must you have before you can apply?

Migrationsverket treats the application as a checklist. If one box is empty, the case waits or fails. You need five things in place.

  • A passport that is valid for the full period you are applying for.
  • Final admission to full-time studies in Sweden, which means 30 credits a semester at a university, or at least 20 teaching hours a week in other programmes.
  • Tuition fees paid before you apply, where tuition applies to you.
  • Comprehensive health insurance, or proof that you have applied for it, if your studies are shorter than a year.
  • Money to support yourself for the whole permit period.

Conditional offers are not enough

The word that matters is "final". A conditional offer that still depends on your final transcript, an English test score or a degree certificate is not final admission. Clear the conditions with the university first, then ask for the formal admission decision that states full-time, on-site study. That document goes straight into the application.

Tuition comes first

For non-EU students the order is strict: admission, then tuition payment, then the permit application. Dalarna University, for example, tells students on its own permit page that Migrationsverket will not process an application until the tuition fee has been received, and the university reports the payment to the agency itself. Paying late therefore delays the whole chain. Our guide on paying university tuition fees from Pakistan explains the banking side, including how long a transfer realistically takes.

How much money must you show?

As of 14 October 2026, the Migrationsverket page for higher education studies sets the maintenance requirement at SEK 10,656 per month for applications made in 2026, up from SEK 10,584 in 2025. Think of it as a monthly rate multiplied by the number of months on the permit, not a fixed deposit.

The arithmetic for a single student

The permit is usually granted for one or two years depending on the institution, and never longer than your studies or your passport. A single applicant applying for a full year therefore needs SEK 127,872 (12 times SEK 10,656). For two years the figure is SEK 255,744. Convert those at the day's rate before you decide whether the plan is realistic. Rates move, and we do not quote a rupee figure here because it would be out of date within weeks.

Permit period applied forMonthsFunds to show at SEK 10,656 a month
One semester (about 5 months)5SEK 53,280
One year12SEK 127,872
Two years (typical master's)24SEK 255,744

The table is our own multiplication of the official monthly figure, so treat it as a planning aid and check the agency's calculator or page before filing. Migrationsverket does not publish these totals as fixed amounts.

Reductions when the university provides housing or food

As of 14 October 2026, Migrationsverket lets the requirement fall by SEK 4,736 per month where the institution provides free housing and by SEK 2,960 per month where it provides free food. These reductions are for support provided by the institution or an exchange organisation. A private landlord who lets you stay for free does not count, and neither does a relative's spare room.

Tip. Many Pakistani applicants hit trouble because they show an exact minimum. Aim for a comfortable margin above the required total, and keep the money in the same account for months before filing. A balance that appears the week before applying invites questions that a long, steady history never raises.

Where the money can come from

Migrationsverket accepts personal bank assets, scholarships, a student grant or loan from your home country, and employment income. Funds from a scholarship are evidenced by the award letter. A loan or grant needs a certificate showing the amount and the payment period. Your own savings are shown with bank statements.

The funds must be in an account in your name and available to you. For a deeper look at how to show savings cleanly, see our notes on bank evidence for a European student visa, which follows the same discipline even though Germany uses a blocked account.

This is the point where Pakistani families are most often caught out. Migrationsverket states that a private individual is not accepted as a sponsor for this permit. Dalarna University repeats the rule on its own page: the funds must sit in an account in your name, and sponsor support is not accepted.

In real life, most Pakistani students are funded by parents. That is fine, but the transfer has to be complete. Money that your father or uncle moves into an account in your name, well before you apply, becomes your own asset. A letter promising to send money each month, with the funds still in the parent's account, does not satisfy the rule.

Be ready to explain the source of a large transfer if asked. A gift letter from the parent, a short note on how the funds were earned or saved, and the matching parent bank statement make the transfer easy to understand. We cannot promise how any officer will weigh a file, but a transfer that is documented and old enough to look settled is far easier to defend than one that is neither.

What does the application cost?

As of 14 October 2026, the same Migrationsverket page lists the application fee as SEK 1,500 for an adult and SEK 750 for a child under 18, and says it is not refunded if the application is rejected. The fee is paid with the online application. Some groups are exempt, including students of the World Maritime University in Malmö, Japanese citizens, and recipients of certain scholarships such as those from Sida, the EU or the Swedish Institute. A Pakistani student on a Swedish Institute scholarship should confirm the exemption on the agency page before paying.

Dalarna University independently lists the fee as SEK 1,500 per applicant, paid as part of the online application, which matches the agency.

The full cost picture

  • Permit fee: SEK 1,500 for an adult, SEK 750 for a child.
  • Tuition: paid to the university before you apply, and the biggest single item for non-EU students.
  • Funds: SEK 10,656 for each month of the permit, which you keep as living money.
  • Health insurance: needed for stays under a year, otherwise you register in the population register.
  • Passport, document attestation and translation costs in Pakistan, plus the flight.

Which documents does Migrationsverket want?

The agency lists the core documents clearly. Prepare them as clean scans before you open the e-service, because it asks you to upload them in one sitting.

  • Copies of the passport pages that show your personal details and validity.
  • The admission decision stating full-time, on-site studies in Sweden.
  • Proof of health insurance, or of an application for it, where your studies are shorter than a year.
  • Proof of maintenance: a bank statement, scholarship copy, grant or loan certificate, or employment documents with payslips.
  • Documents in Swedish or English. Other languages need a certified translation plus the original.

As of 14 October 2026, the Migrationsverket document list asks for a bank statement issued no more than four months before the permit start date. Count backwards from your intended permit start date rather than from the day you apply. A statement downloaded in May for a permit that starts in September may already be too old.

Documents for family members

If your spouse or children apply with you, add their passports, proof of the relationship (a marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation), a birth record naming the parents for each child, and proof of their insurance and funds. If one parent stays behind in Pakistan, include that parent's written consent. Pakistani certificates usually need to be attested and sometimes translated first. Our guide to apostille and attestation of Pakistani documents sets out the order of steps so nothing gets stamped twice.

How do you apply, step by step?

Step 1: Get final admission and pay tuition

Accept your offer, clear every condition, and pay the tuition fee if one applies. Keep the receipt.

Step 2: Check your passport and funds

Make sure the passport covers the whole permit period. Work out the funds total for the months you will request, and confirm the money is in your own account.

Step 3: Choose the e-service or paper forms

The online route needs you to be 18 or over, to have a valid email address, to hold a Visa or Mastercard for the fee, and to be able to scan documents. Family members can be added to your application. The alternative is paper form 113011 for the student and 135011 for each family member, handed in at a Swedish embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Check what the mission serving Pakistan currently accepts before you plan around paper.

Step 4: Submit and pay

Upload the documents, submit, and pay SEK 1,500. Save the confirmation and the case number.

Step 5: Identity checks

You may be asked to show your passport digitally through an app, or in person at an embassy, and you may be called to an interview. Respond fast, because a missed request can stall the case.

Step 6: Wait for the decision, then travel

Do not book a non-refundable flight until the permit is issued. You may not travel to Sweden to study while the application is still pending.

There is no fixed application deadline on the agency page. The advice is to apply as soon as you have admission and have paid tuition, so the case is decided before term begins.

How long does a decision take?

Migrationsverket reports that 75 percent of recently decided cases were decided within three months, and it says this is not a promise. The agency also states that cases are handled in the order received and that priority processing is not available. Universities describe the wait as several months. Taking those together, the safe reading is "plan for three months and be ready for longer."

That has a hard consequence for intake planning. If your course begins in late August and you apply in late June, you are betting on the fast end of the range. Apply in spring if you can. And be careful about universities that suggest you "just come and fix it later". The rules do not allow that.

How many hours can you work in 2026?

This is the biggest change for students who planned to cover living costs with part-time work. As of 14 October 2026, Migrationsverket's announcement of the new rules sets the starting limit at 15 hours of work per week during semesters for permits decided on or after 11 June 2026, with no limit in June, July and August.

What the new rule says

  • Bachelor's and master's students may work up to 15 hours a week during semesters on permits granted on or after 11 June 2026.
  • There is no limit in June, July and August.
  • Work at your own university, such as teaching, administration, research or student representation, and work that is part of your programme, such as a traineeship, is outside the cap.
  • After at least two semesters and a completed diploma or certificate, a graduate may work without limit while the permit remains valid, unless applying for a new first or second cycle study permit.

Chalmers University of Technology confirms the 15 hour weekly limit and warns that working more can lead to the permit being withdrawn or not extended. Treat the limit as a condition of the permit, not a guideline. Hours are not averaged in any way that is written on the page, so do not assume you can bank hours from a quiet week.

If your permit pre-dates 11 June 2026

Students who received a permit before that date are not caught immediately. The agency says the 15 hour limit, the tougher progress requirement and the address duty apply when they later extend their permit. New Pakistani applicants should assume they are under the new rules from day one.

For a wider comparison of how countries treat student work, see our guide on part-time work rules while studying abroad. Even at the maximum, 15 hours will not replace the funds requirement, which is why the money you show at application must be real living money.

What study progress keeps the permit alive?

As of 14 October 2026, Migrationsverket asks for 37.5 credits in the first year (62.5 percent of full-time study) and 45 credits in each later year for permits granted on or after 11 June 2026. Students who received permits before that date are measured against older numbers: 15 credits in year one, 22.5 in year two and 30 in year three and later.

This matters from the first semester. Failing exams, repeating courses or dropping to part-time load can weaken an extension application. Treat the credit target as a visa condition. You must also tell the agency your address within 30 days of receiving the permit and after any move, unless you are registered in the population register.

Can your spouse and children come?

Spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners and children under 18 can apply at the same time as you, and the e-service lets you include them. Family members who decide later must apply through a separate process after you arrive.

As of 14 October 2026, Migrationsverket adds SEK 4,440 per month to the requirement for a spouse or cohabiting partner and SEK 2,664 per month for each child. The agency page also notes that new rules for family members accompanying students take effect on 1 October 2026, without spelling out the details on the pages we read. Chalmers adds that a family member who takes up their own study permit below doctoral level must pay the application fee and tuition. Because the family rules are shifting, confirm the current position on the agency page before you commit. Our overview of bringing family while studying abroad compares how different countries handle dependants.

One more point: the agency says a family member's permit can be revoked if their ties to the student end or if the student's own permit is revoked. A dependant's status therefore rests on yours.

Which mistakes lead to refusals?

Funds that are not clearly yours

Money left in a parent's account, a sponsor letter from a relative, or a large balance that appeared last week. Fix this early.

A stale bank statement

The four month rule counts from the permit start date. File a statement that is too old and the case stalls.

Applying before tuition is paid

The agency will not process the case until the university confirms payment. You lose weeks without noticing.

Counting on work income to meet the funds line

Wages from a job you do not yet have are not evidence. Show the savings, scholarship or loan.

Booking flights early

You cannot enter Sweden to study before the decision. A non-refundable ticket bought in hope is a common, avoidable loss.

Ignoring the new work cap

A student who works 25 hours a week in a Stockholm cafe can lose the permit at extension. Know the limit before you accept shifts.

A worked example with dates

This is an illustration, not a real client file. Take Hira, a Lahore graduate with a BS in computer science, admitted to a two year master's at a Swedish university starting in late August 2027.

  • 10 January. She receives a conditional offer and sends her final transcript to clear the condition.
  • 25 March. Final admission is confirmed in writing. She asks the university for the formal decision showing full-time, on-site study.
  • 1 April. Her father transfers the funds into her own account. Two years at SEK 10,656 is SEK 255,744, and she keeps a margin on top.
  • 10 April. She pays the tuition instalment the university requires and saves the receipt.
  • 20 April. She downloads a fresh bank statement, scans her documents, and files the e-service application with the SEK 1,500 fee.
  • May. She answers a request to show her passport through the app within a day.
  • July. The decision arrives, a little under three months after filing. She books a flight only now.
  • Late August. She lands, registers with the university and, within 30 days, records her address if she is not in the population register.

Now the other version. A second applicant files in late June with a bank statement from February, shows her uncle's promise letter instead of transferred funds, and pays tuition after submitting. She is stuck. Same course, same university, avoidable delays. Border and Bridges has seen cases fail on exactly these points, and the fixes cost little if they are made before filing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa or a residence permit to study in Sweden from Pakistan?

You need a residence permit for studies if your course lasts longer than three months. A short stay visa does not allow you to start a degree. The permit must be issued before you travel, and you apply from outside Sweden.

How much money must I show for a Swedish student permit in 2026?

Migrationsverket requires SEK 10,656 for each month of the permit for applications made in 2026. A one year permit therefore needs SEK 127,872 and a two year permit SEK 255,744. Add SEK 4,440 a month for a spouse and SEK 2,664 a month for each child.

What is the application fee?

The fee is SEK 1,500 for an adult and SEK 750 for a child under 18. It is paid with the online application and is not refunded if the application is rejected. Some scholarship holders and groups are exempt, so check the agency page.

Can my father sponsor me?

A private individual is not accepted as a sponsor. Your father can, however, transfer money into an account in your name well before you apply, and that money then counts as yours. A promise letter with funds left in his account does not meet the rule.

How old can my bank statement be?

The statement should be issued no more than four months before the permit start date. Count back from the start date on the permit, not from the day you file, so an early statement can go stale before you travel.

Do I have to pay tuition before applying?

Yes, where tuition applies. The agency will not process the application until the university confirms the fee has been received, and universities such as Dalarna report the payment on your behalf. Pay promptly after final admission so the case can start.

How long does a decision take?

Migrationsverket says 75 percent of recently decided cases were decided within three months, and states this is not a promise. Universities describe the wait as several months. Apply as early as you can after admission and tuition payment.

Can I travel to Sweden while my application is pending?

No. You must hold the permit before travelling to Sweden to study, and as a general rule you must be outside Sweden when you apply. Avoid buying a non-refundable ticket until the decision has arrived.

How many hours can a student work in Sweden now?

Bachelor's and master's students on permits granted on or after 11 June 2026 may work up to 15 hours a week during semesters. There is no limit in June, July and August, and work linked to your university or programme is exempt.

What happens if I work more than the limit?

Migrationsverket and Swedish universities warn that exceeding the limit can lead to the permit being withdrawn or an extension being refused. Keep records of your hours and check any job against the rule before you accept shifts.

How many credits must I pass to extend my permit?

For permits granted on or after 11 June 2026 you need 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits in each later year. Older permits are measured against lower targets until they are extended.

Can Border and Bridges help me with a Swedish student permit?

Yes. We check admission documents, review how your funds are held, plan the timeline around your intake, and prepare family documents. We cannot promise a decision, because Migrationsverket makes it, but a well prepared file avoids the common causes of delay.
