Is Ireland or the UK better in 2026?

There is no single winner for everyone. Ireland tends to cost less on tuition and asks for a smaller amount of money at the visa stage, and its two-year stay-back for master’s graduates is generous. The UK offers a far bigger range of universities, several of them among the most recognised in the world, and a larger economy to find work in. Both let you study in English, and both are popular with Pakistani families, so the choice comes down to what you value more.

Which country has cheaper tuition?

On tuition, Ireland is usually the lighter option for the same type of course, though both countries have a wide range depending on the university.

• Ireland undergraduate: non-EU tuition typically runs from about 12,000 to 30,000 euros a year, with STEM programmes toward the top of that band and medicine far higher, around 50,000 to 65,000 euros.
• Ireland master’s: roughly 10,000 to 35,000 euros a year, and many are one-year programmes, which lowers the total cost.
• UK undergraduate: international tuition typically ranges from about 11,400 to 38,000 pounds a year, reaching higher for medicine.
• UK master’s: usually 12,000 to 32,000 pounds, with the majority of courses landing between 15,000 and 25,000 pounds.

The headline is that Ireland’s typical non-EU tuition sits a little lower than the UK’s for comparable courses, and Ireland’s one-year master’s degrees can shave a full year of living costs off your budget.

How much money must you show for the visa?

This is where the gap is clearest, and it often decides the matter for budget-conscious families.

• Ireland: you must show access to at least 10,000 euros for living costs for a one-year course, alongside proof that your tuition is paid or being paid.
• UK: you must show 1,483 pounds per month for study in London or 1,136 pounds per month outside London, for a maximum of nine months. That works out to 13,347 pounds for London or 10,224 pounds elsewhere, and the money must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days.

What are the post-study work rights?

Both countries let graduates stay and work, but the details differ, and one important UK change is coming.

Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Programme gives a Stamp 1G. A bachelor’s graduate at Level 8 can stay for 12 months, while a master’s or PhD graduate at Level 9 or 10 can stay for up to 24 months, granted as 12 months first and then a further 12 on evidence of a job search.

The UK Graduate Route currently gives two years to bachelor’s and master’s graduates and three years to PhD graduates. There is a change to note: students who apply for the Graduate Route on or before 31 December 2026 still receive the full two years, but from 1 January 2027 the route shortens to 18 months for non-doctoral graduates. PhD graduates keep three years. If a long post-study stay matters to you and you are finishing around that date, the timing of your application counts.

Can you work part-time while studying?

Yes in both, and the term-time limit is the same. Students in both Ireland and the UK can work up to 20 hours per week during term. Ireland also allows up to 40 hours per week during official holiday periods, which helps students cover living costs over the summer. This part-time income does not replace your proof of funds, but it eases day-to-day expenses once you arrive.
