What is the total cost of studying in Lithuania for one year?
Here is a realistic first-year budget for a Pakistani student on a bachelor programme at a public university outside central Vilnius. Figures are for 2026 and are given as ranges because programme choice and city make a large difference.
| Item | Low end | Typical | High end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, bachelor | EUR 1,000 | EUR 2,500 to EUR 4,000 | EUR 5,300, higher for medicine and dentistry |
| Accommodation, 12 months | EUR 1,800 in a shared dormitory | EUR 3,000 to EUR 4,200 | EUR 6,000 in a private Vilnius flat |
| Food and household | EUR 1,800 | EUR 2,400 | EUR 3,600 |
| Transport | EUR 100 with student discount | EUR 150 | EUR 300 |
| Health insurance | EUR 120 | EUR 200 | EUR 400 |
| Phone, internet, books, personal | EUR 400 | EUR 700 | EUR 1,200 |
| Application fee | EUR 100 | EUR 100 to EUR 150 | EUR 150 per university |
| National visa and residence permit | See the visa costs section below; fees are set by the Migration Department and change periodically | ||
| Approximate annual total | About EUR 8,000 | About EUR 10,000 to EUR 12,000 | EUR 15,000 and above |
In Pakistani rupees, a typical year sits somewhere around PKR 3 to 4 million depending on the exchange rate at the time you convert. That is meaningfully less than the UK, Canada or Australia, and comparable with Poland and Hungary.
How much is tuition at Lithuanian universities in 2026?
Lithuania publishes fees per programme rather than a single national rate, and unlike some countries it does not charge non-EU students dramatically more than EU students. In many programmes the fee is identical.
| Level or field | Typical annual tuition, public universities |
|---|---|
| Bachelor, general | EUR 1,000 to EUR 5,300, with many programmes starting near EUR 1,300 |
| Masters, general | EUR 2,200 to EUR 6,500, with many starting near EUR 2,300 |
| Business and management | Commonly in the middle of those ranges |
| Engineering and IT | Commonly mid to upper range |
| Medicine and dentistry | Substantially higher, reaching around EUR 14,000 a year |
| Doctoral | Often funded through research positions |
Two points to note. First, non-refundable application fees at Lithuanian universities typically fall between EUR 100 and EUR 150 per institution, so applying to five universities is a real cost. Second, private higher education institutions and some specialised programmes sit above these ranges, so always read the fee page for your exact programme and intake rather than relying on a general figure.
What do living costs look like in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda?
Lithuania is noticeably cheaper than Western Europe but is not the bargain it was a decade ago. Prices have risen since the euro changeover and again through recent inflation. Budget honestly.
Vilnius
The capital, the largest student city, and the most expensive. A university dormitory room commonly runs EUR 150 to EUR 250 a month. A room in a shared private flat sits closer to EUR 250 to EUR 400, and a studio of your own can reach EUR 450 to EUR 600. Vilnius also has the widest range of part-time work, which partly offsets the higher rent.
Kaunas
The second city and home to several strong technical and medical institutions. Rents typically run 15 to 25 percent below Vilnius, dormitory places are easier to secure, and the student population is large enough that the social side is not a compromise. For a cost-focused Pakistani student, Kaunas is often the smartest choice.
Klaipeda and the smaller cities
Klaipeda on the coast, plus Siauliai and Panevezys, are cheaper again. Programme choice is narrower and English-taught options fewer, but if your programme exists there, your total cost drops noticeably.
Monthly breakdown for a careful student
- Dormitory rent: EUR 150 to EUR 250
- Groceries cooking at home: EUR 150 to EUR 220
- Public transport with student card: EUR 10 to EUR 15
- Mobile and internet: EUR 10 to EUR 20
- Health insurance: EUR 10 to EUR 30
- Personal, social and occasional eating out: EUR 80 to EUR 150
A disciplined student living in a dormitory and cooking at home can hold monthly spending to around EUR 450 to EUR 550. A student in a private Vilnius flat who eats out regularly will spend double that.
What does the visa and residence permit cost?
Pakistani students need a national long-term visa, known as a Visa D, to enter Lithuania, and then a temporary residence permit for stays beyond the visa period. Some students apply for the temporary residence permit directly from Pakistan instead.
The national Visa D state fee is commonly quoted at EUR 120, with a reduced fee available in certain cases where the student is admitted under an intergovernmental agreement. The temporary residence permit carries its own state fee, and published figures vary between sources, with urgent processing costing considerably more than standard processing. Because these fees are set by the Migration Department and revised periodically, and because different sources report different amounts, you should confirm the exact current figure on the official Migration Department payment page before you pay anything.
On top of the state fees, budget for:
- Visa application centre service fee. Charged separately by the outsourced centre handling biometrics.
- Courier and document handling. Depends on where you submit from in Pakistan.
- Mediation letter. Your Lithuanian university issues this and some charge a fee for it.
Assume the visa and permit stage will cost somewhere in the region of EUR 250 to EUR 450 in total once service fees and courier costs are included. Fees are non-refundable if your application is refused.
How much money must I show for the visa?
Lithuania sets the subsistence requirement for students at half of the national minimum monthly wage. With the Lithuanian minimum wage set at EUR 1,153 per month from 1 January 2026, the student subsistence figure works out to roughly EUR 577 per month.
You must show funds covering the full validity of the permit you are applying for, or at least twelve months. For a twelve-month permit that means roughly EUR 6,900, and once you add the return travel funds that migration authorities also expect to see, applicants commonly show somewhere in the region of EUR 7,000 to EUR 8,100.
This is separate from your tuition. Universities normally expect at least the first year’s tuition or a substantial instalment before issuing the documents your visa file depends on. So the realistic amount your family needs available at the visa stage is the subsistence funds plus the tuition you have paid or committed.
Key takeaways
Lithuania costs a Pakistani student roughly EUR 8,000 to EUR 13,000 for a full first year, or around PKR 3 to 4 million. Public university tuition runs about EUR 1,000 to EUR 5,300 for bachelors and EUR 2,200 to EUR 6,500 for masters, with medicine far higher at around EUR 14,000. Living costs sit at roughly EUR 450 to EUR 700 a month depending on city and housing, with Kaunas notably cheaper than Vilnius. The visa financial requirement is based on half the minimum wage, about EUR 577 a month for 2026, so plan for roughly EUR 7,000 to EUR 8,100 for a year. Application fees of EUR 100 to EUR 150 per university add up, so shortlist carefully. Lithuania gives you an EU degree and EU residence at a fraction of Western European cost.
What one-off costs do I pay in Pakistan before I leave?
These are the costs students forget when they budget, and together they often add up to more than a semester of tuition.
| Item | Typical cost in Pakistan |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | PKR 60,000 to PKR 75,000 |
| HEC attestation of degree and transcripts | PKR 10,000 to PKR 30,000 depending on number of documents |
| IBCC attestation of Matric and FSc | PKR 5,000 to PKR 15,000 |
| Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation | PKR 3,000 to PKR 10,000 |
| Document translation where required | PKR 2,000 to PKR 5,000 per document |
| University application fees, three universities | EUR 300 to EUR 450 |
| Courier of documents to Lithuania | PKR 8,000 to PKR 20,000 |
| Visa and permit fees plus service charges | EUR 250 to EUR 450 |
| Flight Lahore or Karachi to Vilnius, one way | PKR 180,000 to PKR 320,000 depending on season and routing |
| Initial settling-in funds on arrival | EUR 500 to EUR 1,000 |

Which Lithuanian universities take Pakistani students?
Lithuania has a small but well-organised higher education system, with a mix of comprehensive universities, technical universities and universities of applied sciences. English-taught programmes concentrate in business, IT, engineering, and health sciences.
Rather than listing names that change their offerings each intake, look for these signals when shortlisting:
- The programme is listed on the official Study in Lithuania portal. This confirms it is a recognised, state-monitored programme.
- The university publishes its fees per programme in euros for your intake year. Vague fee pages are a warning sign.
- Dormitory accommodation is available and priced publicly. This is the biggest determinant of your living cost.
- The international office replies to email within a working week. You will need them repeatedly during your visa process.
- The university issues a mediation letter for your residence permit application. Not every institution does this smoothly.
What are the eligibility requirements?
For a bachelor programme
- Matric and FSc or Intermediate certificates, or an equivalent recognised qualification
- A recognition statement confirming your Pakistani qualification is equivalent to Lithuanian secondary education, usually issued by the Lithuanian centre for quality assessment in higher education
- English at roughly B2 level. IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 is the common range depending on programme, and some universities accept alternatives or their own online test
- Programme-specific subject requirements, particularly for engineering, IT and health sciences
For a masters programme
- A completed HEC-recognised bachelor degree in a related field
- A recognition assessment of that degree
- English at roughly B2, commonly IELTS 6.0 to 6.5
- Motivation letter, CV and sometimes reference letters
- An interview for some programmes, usually conducted online
If your English score is the obstacle, the accepted alternatives vary by institution, similar to the situation we describe for Germany in our article on studying in Germany without IELTS. Ask each Lithuanian university directly and keep their emailed reply.
Want a costed plan for Lithuania before you commit?
Border and Bridges has guided Pakistani students since 2016 from our office in Johar Town, Lahore. We are registered with SECP and FBR, accredited by ICEF and verified by the British Council. Tell us your qualification, your English level and your budget, and we will tell you which Lithuanian programmes fit and what your realistic total cost will be.
What is the step-by-step application process?
- Shortlist programmes. Use the official Study in Lithuania portal and each university’s own site. Confirm tuition, intake dates and English requirements for your specific programme.
- Take IELTS or an accepted alternative. Book early. You want the result before application deadlines, not after.
- Get your documents attested in Pakistan. IBCC for school certificates, HEC for degrees and transcripts, then Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Apply for qualification recognition. Lithuania requires your foreign qualification to be assessed for equivalence. Some universities handle this for you as part of admission, others require you to apply separately. Ask which applies before you start.
- Submit university applications and pay the application fees. Expect EUR 100 to EUR 150 per institution.
- Receive your offer and pay the tuition instalment. Universities normally require at least a first instalment before issuing the documents your visa file needs.
- Obtain the mediation letter from your university. This is the document confirming your admission for migration purposes.
- Assemble your financial evidence. Bank statements or a sponsor commitment covering roughly EUR 577 a month for the permit period, plus return travel funds.
- Apply for the national Visa D or temporary residence permit. Submit biometrics at the visa application centre and pay the state fee plus service fee.
- Book accommodation before flying. Apply for a dormitory place the moment you accept your offer.
- Fly, register your address and complete enrolment. Then convert or collect your residence permit as instructed.
The overall shape is similar across European destinations, and our general step-by-step guide to applying to universities abroad is a useful companion if you are comparing Lithuania against other options.
How long does the whole process take?
Plan for six to nine months from first research to landing in Vilnius or Kaunas. Compressing it further is possible but risky.
- Months 1 to 2: shortlisting programmes, booking and sitting IELTS, starting attestation
- Months 2 to 3: qualification recognition and university applications
- Months 3 to 5: offers arrive, tuition instalment paid, mediation letter issued
- Months 4 to 6: visa or residence permit application submitted, biometrics given
- Months 5 to 8: decision. Standard processing takes longer than urgent processing, and urgent costs considerably more
- Before semester start: flight, dormitory move-in, address registration, enrolment
The autumn intake is the main one, with applications typically closing in late spring or early summer. A smaller spring intake exists at some institutions. If you are weighing intake timing generally, our article on choosing between fall and spring intakes covers the trade-offs.
Which documents do I need?
- Passport valid well beyond your intended stay, with copies of all used pages
- Biometric photographs to Schengen specification
- Completed visa or residence permit application form
- University admission letter and mediation letter
- Matric and FSc certificates and mark sheets, IBCC attested
- Bachelor degree and transcripts if applying for a masters, HEC attested
- Qualification recognition statement
- IELTS or accepted English evidence
- Proof of tuition payment or instalment receipt
- Bank statements showing the required subsistence funds, or a sponsor commitment form
- Health insurance valid in Lithuania
- Proof of accommodation, usually the dormitory confirmation or a rental agreement
- Motivation letter and CV
- Return travel evidence or funds for it
- Police clearance certificate where requested
Are there scholarships for Pakistani students in Lithuania?
Fewer than in Germany or Hungary, but they exist. Be realistic: Lithuania’s main appeal is that tuition is already low, so the amount a scholarship saves you is smaller in absolute terms than in a high-fee country.
- Lithuanian state scholarships and bilateral programmes. The Education Exchanges Support Foundation administers state scholarships for students from certain partner countries. Availability for Pakistani nationals varies year to year, so check the current call rather than assuming.
- University merit scholarships. Several Lithuanian universities offer partial tuition reductions to strong international applicants, often applied automatically at admission based on your academic record. This is the most winnable category and the one students most often fail to ask about.
- Erasmus Plus mobility. Once you are enrolled at a Lithuanian university, Erasmus Plus lets you spend a semester at a partner institution elsewhere in Europe with a mobility grant. This is a real and underused benefit of studying inside the EU.
- Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters. Some joint programmes include Lithuanian universities as partners. These are fully funded and highly competitive. See our Erasmus Mundus guide for the application cycle.
- Departmental and research funding at doctoral level. Doctoral positions in Lithuania are frequently funded, which changes the financial picture entirely for PhD applicants.
Ask each university’s international office directly what scholarships apply to your programme and your nationality. Their published pages are often incomplete.
Can I work part-time and what happens after graduation?
Non-EU students in Lithuania are generally permitted to work alongside full-time study, subject to conditions on hours and on holding a valid residence permit. The precise allowance and any conditions attached to the first year of study are set by Lithuanian labour and migration rules, so confirm the current position with your university’s international office when you enrol rather than relying on what a previous student tells you.
The practical picture is mixed. Wages in Lithuania are lower than in Western Europe, and many part-time roles available to students without Lithuanian language skills are in hospitality, delivery and retail. Learning even basic Lithuanian widens your options considerably. English-speaking roles exist in Vilnius in customer support and shared service centres, which is where many international students find better-paid work.
After graduation, Lithuania offers a period to remain and look for work, and graduates who find qualified employment can move onto work-based residence. Because you hold an EU residence permit, you also gain mobility options across the union that a student in a non-EU country does not have. If long-term settlement is your goal, read our overview of the best countries for PR after studying abroad before deciding, and our summary of post-study work visas for a comparison.
How does Lithuania compare with Poland, Hungary and Germany?
| Lithuania | Poland | Hungary | Germany | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical bachelor tuition | EUR 1,000 to EUR 5,300 | EUR 2,000 to EUR 6,000 | EUR 3,000 to EUR 8,000 | EUR 0 at most public universities |
| Monthly living cost | EUR 450 to EUR 700 | EUR 450 to EUR 750 | EUR 450 to EUR 700 | EUR 900 to EUR 1,100 |
| Funds to show for visa | About EUR 577 per month | Set by Polish rules | Set by Hungarian rules | Blocked account EUR 11,904 |
| English-taught choice | Moderate | Wide | Wide | Wide at masters level |
| Major scholarship scheme | Limited | Limited | Stipendium Hungaricum | DAAD |
| Graduate job market size | Small | Medium | Medium | Large |
| Competition for places | Lower | Higher | Higher | Highest |
The honest summary is this. Germany beats Lithuania on tuition and on job market size, but demands a EUR 11,904 blocked account up front and has far longer visa timelines. Poland and Hungary are similar to Lithuania in cost but attract more applicants, which means more competition. Lithuania’s advantage is that it is genuinely cheap, genuinely inside the EU, and comparatively uncrowded.

What mistakes cost applicants the most?
- Skipping the qualification recognition step. Lithuania requires your Pakistani qualification to be formally assessed for equivalence. Students who assume the university handles it automatically lose weeks.
- Applying to too many universities. At EUR 100 to EUR 150 per application, applying to six universities costs close to a semester of tuition. Shortlist three.
- Budgeting only tuition. Tuition is often the smaller half of your annual cost. Accommodation, food and insurance together usually exceed it.
- Missing the dormitory application window. This one mistake can add EUR 2,000 or more to your annual cost.
- Showing insufficient funds. The subsistence requirement is tied to the minimum wage and changes when the wage changes. Verify the current figure in the month you apply.
- Assuming part-time work will cover the shortfall. Lithuanian student wages are modest and the first months are the hardest. Arrive with a genuine buffer.
- Ignoring the language question. Your degree may be in English, but daily life, part-time work and post-graduation employment all improve with Lithuanian.
- Leaving the visa application to the last month. Standard processing is not fast, and urgent processing costs considerably more.
- Trusting an outdated fee figure. Migration Department fees and university tuition are both revised. Check the official page in the month you pay.

A realistic example from Lahore
Consider a student we will call Bilal, who completed FSc Pre-Engineering in Lahore with 78 percent and scored IELTS 6.0 overall. His family could commit roughly PKR 3.5 million a year, which ruled out the UK, Canada and Australia entirely.
He shortlisted three English-taught bachelor programmes in information technology, two in Kaunas and one in Vilnius, and paid EUR 130 in application fees to each. He had his FSc attested through IBCC and then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and submitted his qualification for recognition assessment at the same time as his applications rather than afterwards, which saved him roughly a month.
He received two offers. He chose the Kaunas programme at EUR 3,200 a year because the university confirmed a dormitory place at EUR 180 a month, against the Vilnius option where the equivalent room was EUR 290. That single difference saved him about EUR 1,300 over the year.
His financial evidence showed a little over EUR 7,500 to cover the subsistence requirement plus return travel funds. He paid his first tuition instalment, obtained his mediation letter, submitted his application with biometrics in Islamabad and received his decision about ten weeks later.
His first-year outlay came to roughly EUR 3,200 tuition, EUR 2,160 dormitory rent, about EUR 2,400 food and household, EUR 150 transport, EUR 200 insurance and roughly EUR 700 personal, giving a total near EUR 8,800. Adding his Pakistan-side costs of IELTS, attestation, application fees, visa fees and the flight, his all-in first year came to roughly PKR 3.4 million.
In his second year he found part-time work in a customer support role in Kaunas that used his English, which covered most of his living costs. He also applied for an Erasmus Plus semester in the Netherlands, which cost him little because of the mobility grant.
Bilal’s route is not glamorous and Kaunas is not a name his relatives recognised. But he holds an EU degree, EU residence and mobility across Europe, for a total spend that would not have covered one year of tuition alone in London or Toronto.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to study in Lithuania from Pakistan in total?
Budget roughly EUR 8,000 to EUR 13,000 for a full first year, covering tuition, accommodation, food, insurance and transport. In rupees that is commonly PKR 3 to 4 million depending on the exchange rate. Medicine and dentistry cost substantially more.
Is Lithuania cheaper than Poland or Hungary?
They are broadly comparable. Lithuanian bachelor tuition often starts a little lower, at around EUR 1,000 to EUR 1,300 for some programmes, and living costs are similar. Hungary has a stronger national scholarship scheme in the Stipendium Hungaricum, while Lithuania has less competition for places.
Is tuition free in Lithuania for Pakistani students?
No. State-funded tuition-free places are generally reserved for EU and EEA citizens through the national admissions system. Pakistani students pay tuition, though at rates that are low by Western European standards.
How much bank statement do I need for a Lithuania student visa?
The subsistence requirement for students is half the national minimum monthly wage, which works out to roughly EUR 577 per month for 2026 given a minimum wage of EUR 1,153. You must cover the permit period or at least twelve months, so plan for roughly EUR 7,000 to EUR 8,100 including return travel funds. Verify the current figure before applying, as it moves with the minimum wage.
Do I need IELTS to study in Lithuania?
Usually yes, at roughly B2 level. IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 is the common range depending on the programme. Some universities accept alternatives such as TOEFL, PTE, a Medium of Instruction letter or their own online test, so confirm directly with each institution in writing.
Can I work part-time in Lithuania as a student?
Non-EU students are generally permitted to work alongside full-time study, subject to conditions on hours and on holding a valid residence permit. Confirm the current allowance with your university’s international office when you enrol. Wages are modest, so treat part-time work as a supplement rather than a funding plan.
How much does the Lithuanian student visa cost?
The national Visa D state fee is commonly quoted at EUR 120, with reductions in certain cases. The temporary residence permit has its own state fee and urgent processing costs considerably more than standard. Published figures vary between sources, so check the official Migration Department payment page. Including service and courier fees, budget roughly EUR 250 to EUR 450 overall.
Which is cheaper, Vilnius or Kaunas?
Kaunas, typically by 15 to 25 percent on accommodation. Dormitory places are also easier to secure there. Vilnius has more part-time work, which partly offsets the higher rent, but for a cost-focused student Kaunas is usually the better choice.
How long does the Lithuanian student visa take from Pakistan?
Plan for six to nine months for the whole process from first research to arrival, with the visa or permit decision itself commonly taking a couple of months on standard processing. Urgent processing is faster but costs considerably more. Apply early rather than close to the semester start.
Can I study medicine in Lithuania from Pakistan?
Yes, and Lithuanian medical programmes attract international students. Costs are far higher than other fields, reaching around EUR 14,000 a year for medicine and dentistry. Check recognition of the degree by the relevant Pakistani authority before committing if you intend to practise at home.
Do I get a Schengen benefit studying in Lithuania?
Lithuania is in the Schengen area and the European Union, so a valid Lithuanian residence permit lets you travel within Schengen under the usual conditions. It also gives you access to Erasmus Plus mobility, which lets you spend a semester at a partner university elsewhere in Europe with a grant.
Is Lithuania good for IT and engineering students?
Reasonably. Lithuania has a growing technology sector, particularly in fintech and shared service centres in Vilnius, and English-taught IT and engineering programmes exist at several institutions. The graduate job market is smaller than Germany’s or Poland’s, so students often use Lithuania as an affordable EU entry point rather than a final destination.
What is a mediation letter and why does it matter?
It is the document your Lithuanian university issues confirming your admission for migration purposes, and your visa or residence permit file depends on it. Not every institution issues it quickly, which is why we recommend checking the international office’s responsiveness before you choose a university.
How can Border and Bridges help with a Lithuanian application?
We assess your qualification, English level and budget, shortlist programmes that genuinely fit rather than ones that will waste your application fee, and guide you through recognition, attestation and the visa file. We have worked with Pakistani students since 2016 from Johar Town, Lahore, and we are registered with SECP and FBR, accredited by ICEF and verified by the British Council.
