What does extending a study permit from inside Canada mean?

Extending means applying for a new study permit while you are still in Canada, because the one you hold is running out before your program does. You do it online. You do not leave the country to do it.

Your study permit carries an expiry date under the additional information section. A study permit is usually valid for the length of your program plus a 90 day cushion, which exists so you can either extend your stay or prepare to leave. That cushion is not extra study time. If you move to a new designated learning institution, you apply to extend your permit for the new school before you finish at the old one. There is a real incentive to get this right. Studies taking longer than expected
