What is Chevening and what does it cover?

Chevening is the UK government international scholarships programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. It brings future leaders to the UK for a fully funded master’s degree, usually a one year taught programme. For a Pakistani professional, it is one of the most valuable awards available, because it removes almost every financial barrier to a UK degree.

Who is eligible from Pakistan?

Pakistan is a Chevening eligible country, so Pakistani citizens can apply. The core requirements, as set out by Chevening, are these.

• Citizenship. You are a citizen of Pakistan or another Chevening eligible country, and you intend to return there after your studies.
• Work experience. You have at least two years of work experience, which Chevening counts as 2,800 hours. This can include full time, part time, voluntary and paid internships, added together.
• An undergraduate degree. You hold a degree that qualifies you for entry to a UK postgraduate programme, typically a bachelor.
• Return commitment. You agree to return to Pakistan for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
• University offers. You apply to eligible UK master courses and secure at least one unconditional offer by the set deadline.

You are not eligible if you already hold a scholarship funded by the UK government, or if you are an employee or recent former employee of certain UK government bodies or Chevening partner organisations. Chevening welcomes applicants of any age and does not set an upper age limit, and it does not require a minimum grade so long as your degree qualifies you for a UK master’s. What are the dates for 2027 to 2028?

Chevening runs on a fixed annual cycle. For the 2027 to 2028 intake, which is the round Pakistani applicants apply to during 2026, applications open in August 2026 and the deadline to submit your application is 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. After that, selection happens over the winter, interviews take place in the spring, and conditional selections are announced.

The other date that catches people out is the university offer deadline. According to Chevening, you must receive and upload at least one unconditional UK university offer by 17:00 UK time on 8 July 2027. Scholars then start their courses in the UK in the autumn of 2027. Miss the offer deadline and you lose the scholarship even after being selected, so treat the university applications as urgent, not optional.

How do you apply step by step?

1. Check your eligibility. Confirm your citizenship, your 2,800 hours of work experience and your undergraduate degree before you start.
2. Choose three eligible UK master courses. You select up to three different courses at UK universities. They should connect logically to your career plan.
3. Create your online application. Register on the Chevening application system when the cycle opens in August 2026.
4. Write the four essays. Leadership, networking, your course choice and your career plan. These carry the most weight, so give them real time.
5. Add your references and education details. You provide details of your qualifications and, at the required stage, two references.
6. Submit before the deadline. Complete everything before 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Late applications are not accepted.
7. Attend interview if shortlisted. Shortlisted applicants interview at the British High Commission or an approved format in the spring.
8. Secure an unconditional offer. If selected, obtain at least one unconditional UK university offer and upload it by 8 July 2027.
